Formulation and Shelf Life of a Nutritional Supplement for Undernourished Elderly People

Fabiane La Flor Ziegler,Jose de Assis Faria,Valdemiro Carlos Sgarbieri 한국식품과학회 2008 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.17 No.2

A nutritional supplement was developed aiming at correcting the most common nutrient and caloric deficiencies encountered in elderly people (≥60 years old). The protein source was a mixture of whey protein isolates (WPI) and bovine collagen hydrolysate (BCH) with high nutritional and functional qualities making up 12% of the formulation. The carbohydrate fraction was composed of sucrose, inulin (soluble fiber), and fructo-oligosaccharide (prebiotic). The most commonly deficient essential minerals and vitamins were also included. Acceptance of the product was good according to both an elderly panel and a laboratory panel composing of both sexes and various ages. The stability of the formulations was evaluated and the estimated shelf life at room temperature (ca. 27℃) was approximately 4 months.

Pressurized liquid extraction of brewer’s spent grain: Kinetics and crude extracts characterization

Giulia Herbst,Fabiane Hamerski,Massimiliano Errico,Marcos L. Corazza 한국공업화학회 2021 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.102 No.-

In this study, extraction yield of valuable compounds from brewer’s spent grain (BSG) using pressurizedliquid extraction (PLE) was investigated varying temperature, solvent type, and flow rate at a constantpressure. The results were compared with Soxhlet extractions using the total phenolic compounds(TPC), total flavonoid compounds (TFC), antioxidant activity (AA), reducing sugars (RS), and total reducingsugars (TRS) as indices. The highest PLE extraction yield was 20.1 wt%, at 120 C, 2 mL/min using ethanolto water volume ratio of 0.5, at 10 MPa. The TPC, TFC, and AA content were favored by water and water/ethanol extractions and temperature increase. The highest AA was obtained with water at 120 C and4 mL/min achieving 9944, 4769 and 4096 mmol TE/100 g of BSG extract, respectively. PLE was capableof present high extraction yields maintaining the RS and TRS in the BSG matrix. In addition, BSG wasdefatted with compressed propane before the extraction with PLE, showing that compressed propaneis highly efficient in recovering the lipid fraction from BSG. The results demonstrated a great potentialof water and different EtOH/Water solvent ratio at pressurized conditions for obtaining biocompoundsof BSG in a crude extract with expressive biological activity.

A CAD/CAM-based strategy for concurrent endodontic and restorative treatment

        Patricia Maria Escobar,Anil Kishen,Fabiane Carneiro Lopes,Caroline Cristina Borges,Eugenio Gabriel Kegler,Manoel Damião Sousa-Neto 대한치과보존학회 2019 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.44 No.3

This case report describes a technique in which endodontic treatment and permanent indirect restoration were completed in the same clinical appointment with the aid of a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system. Two patients were diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis of the mandibular first molar. After access preparation, root canals were located, irrigation was performed until bleeding ceased, and the coronal tooth structure was prepared for indirect restoration. Then, utilizing an interim 3-mm build-up of the endodontic access cavity, a hemi-arch digital scan was performed with an intraoral scanner. Subsequent to digital scanning, restoration design was performed simultaneously with the endodontic procedure. The root canals were shaped using the Race system under irrigation with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite followed by root canal filling. The pulp chamber was subsequently filled with a 3-mm-thick composite resin restoration mimicking the interim build-up previously utilized to facilitate block milling in the CAD/ CAM system. Clinical try-in of the permanent onlay restoration was followed by acid etching, application of a 5th generation adhesive, and cementation of the indirect restoration. Once the restoration was cemented, rubber dam isolation was removed, followed by occlusal adjustment and polishing. After 2 years of follow-up, the restorations were esthetically and functionally satisfactory, without complications.

The Involvement of the nif-Associated Ferredoxin-Like Genes fdxA and fdxN of Herbaspirillum seropedicae in Nitrogen Fixation

        André L.F. Souza,Adriana L. Invitti,Fabiane G.M. Rego,Rose A. Monteiro,Giseli Klassen,Emanuel M. Souza,Leda S. Chubatsu,Fábio O. Pedrosa,Liu U. Rigo 한국미생물학회 2010 The journal of microbiology Vol.48 No.1

The pathway of electron transport to nitrogenase in the endophytic β-Proteobacterium Herbaspirillum seropedicae has not been characterized. We have generated mutants in two nif-associated genes encoding putative ferredoxins, fdxA and fdxN. The fdxA gene is part of the operon nifHDKENXorf1orf2fdxAnifQmodABC and is transcribed from the nifH promoter, as revealed by lacZ gene fusion. The fdxN gene is probably cotranscribed with the nifB gene. Mutational analysis suggests that the FdxA protein is essential for maximum nitrogenase activity, since the nitrogenase activity of the fdxA mutant strain was reduced to about 30% of that of the wild-type strain. In addition, the fdxA mutation had no effect on the nitrogenase switch-off in response to ammonium. Nitrogenase activity of a mutant strain lacking the fdxN gene was completely abolished. This phenotype was reverted by complementation with fdxN expressed under lacZ promoter control. The results suggest that the products of both the fdxA and fdxN genes are probably involved in electron transfer during nitrogen fixation.

Governance challenges within national development planning: lessons from the Colombian experience

Fabian Telch,Carolina Isaza,Nadia Rubaii 한국행정학회 2020 International Review of Public Administration Vol.25 No.3

This article discusses how governance processes are developed through national development planning (NDP), drawing on the experiences of Colombian practitioners. A majority of countries of the world use NDP as a key policy tool across the full range of substantive policy areas, however recent research in the fields of public administration and policy have largely ignored the topic. We use data from surveys and focus groups to examine overlapping issues which are entral to these fields, namely: 1) multi-level coordination and intergovernmental relations; 2) communication and collaboration across levels and sectors; and 3) policy design, implementation and evaluation. The article discusses broader lessons for our understanding of core governance concepts and the practice of NDP in other countries, related to the influence of international actors, mechanisms to ensure technical and managerial capacity at the local levels, effective means of participation of civil society organizations and managing information to implement plans effectively.

      • 2SG-1 Circular Economy of Mobile Phones and Li-Ion Batteries

        ( Fabian Wolff ) 한국공업화학회 2017 한국공업화학회 연구논문 초록집 Vol.2017 No.1

Electric and electronic devices have often a very short lifespan, which raises the question of their end of life treatment. While the level of product complexity is increasing every year, the recycling methods struggle to keep up with the technological progress and are lagging behind. Two waste fractions with very high contents of valuable materials are mobile phones and Li-Ion batteries. The Fraunhofer Institute aims to improve the recycling of mobile phones by a combination of an electro hydraulic fragmentation (EHF) in combination with the solvent based CreaSolv® Process. The CreaSolv® Process was also applied to improve the recycling of Li-Ion batteries. In a project we showed the possibility to retrieve the housing polymers, the separator and the binder PVDF while making the active mass fluorine-free and accessible. This makes downstream recovery of Co easier and more cost effective.

Vol.30 No.3

In Chile, since the restitution of democracy (1989), the distribution of parliamentary seats is governed by a binomial system, the only one of its kind in the world. In this electoral system, two senators and two deputies are elected for each senatorial constituency and electoral district. By the end of 2017, this system will be replaced by the well-known D’Hondt method, which entails a significant increase in the number of parliamentarians and the redistribution of seats in the legislative chambers. In this study, we discuss the problem of centralism and analyze how this redistribution of seats will affect the voting power of the different regions of the country. To measure the hypothetical voting power of each region we use classical power indices of cooperative game theory. The study shows that although the voting power of the regions in the Senate will remain relatively unchanged, the centralization of power in the Metropolitan Region will be increased in the Chamber of Deputies. Finally, we propose a method to obtain a feasible redistributions of seats, which would effectively increase the voting power of the other regions in the Chamber of Deputies.
