      • Transcriptional activation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α by HDAC4 and HDAC5 involves differential recruitment of p300 and FIH-1

        Seo, Hee-Won,Kim, Eun-Jin,Na, Hyelin,Lee, Mi-Ock Elsevier 2009 FEBS letters Vol.583 No.1

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The interplay between hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and histone deacetylase (HDACs) have been well studied; however, the mechanism of cross-talk is unclear. Here, we investigated the roles of HDAC4 and HDAC5 in the regulation of HIF-1α function and its associated mechanisms. HDAC4 and HDAC5 enhanced transactivation by HIF-1α without stabilizing HIF-1α. HDAC4 and HDAC5 physically associated with HIF-1α through the inhibitory domain (ID) that is the binding site for factor inhibiting HIF-1 (FIH-1). In the presence of these HDACs, binding of HIF-1α to FIH-1 decreased, whereas binding to p300 increased. These results indicate that HDAC4 and HDAC5 increase the transactivation function of HIF-1α by promoting dissociation of HIF-1α from FIH-1 and association with p300.</P><P><B>Structured summary:</B></P><P>MINT-6802187:</P><P><I>HIF1 alpha</I> (uniprotkb:Q16665) <I>physically interacts</I> (MI:0218) with <I>FIH1</I> (uniprotkb:Q9NWT6) by <I>anti bait coimmunoprecipitation</I> (MI:0006)</P><P>MINT-6802058:</P><P><I>HIF1 alpha</I> (uniprotkb:Q16665) <I>physically interacts</I> (MI:0218) with <I>HDAC4</I> (uniprotkb:P56524) by <I>pull down</I> (MI:0096)</P><P>MINT-6802021:</P><P><I>HIF1 alpha</I> (uniprotkb:Q61221) <I>physically interacts</I> (MI:0218) with <I>HDAC4</I> (uniprotkb:P56524) by <I>anti bait coimmunoprecipitation</I> (MI:0006)</P><P>MINT-6802036:</P><P><I>HIF1 alpha</I> (uniprotkb:Q61221) <I>physically interacts</I> (MI:0218) with <I>HDAC5</I> (uniprotkb:Q9UQL6) by <I>anti bait coimmunoprecipitation</I> (MI:0006)</P><P>MINT-6802102:</P><P><I>HIF1 alpha</I> (uniprotkb:Q16665) <I>physically interacts</I> (MI:0218) with <I>HDAC5</I> (uniprotkb:Q9UQL6) by <I>pull down</I> (MI:0096)</P><P>MINT-6802121, MINT-6802156:</P><P><I>P300</I> (uniprotkb:Q09472) <I>physically interacts</I> (MI:0218) with <I>HIF1 alpha</I> (uniprotkb:Q16665) by <I>anti bait coimmunoprecipitation</I> (MI:0006)</P>

      • An S-locus receptor-like kinase in plasma membrane interacts with calmodulin in <i>Arabidopsis</i>

        Kim, Ho Soo,Jung, Mi Soon,Lee, Kyunghee,Kim, Kyung Eun,Yoo, Jae Hyuk,Kim, Min Chul,Kim, Doh Hoon,Cho, Moo Je,Chung, Woo Sik Elsevier 2009 FEBS letters Vol.583 No.1

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Calmodulin-regulated protein phosphorylation plays a pivotal role in amplifying and diversifying the action of calcium ion. In this study, we identified a calmodulin-binding receptor-like protein kinase (CBRLK1) that was classified into an S-locus RLK family. The plasma membrane localization was determined by the localization of CBRLK1 tagged with a green fluorescence protein. Calmodulin bound specifically to a Ca2+-dependent calmodulin binding domain in the C-terminus of CBRLK1. The bacterially expressed CBRLK1 kinase domain could autophosphorylate and phosphorylates general kinase substrates, such as myelin basic proteins. The autophosphorylation sites of CBRLK1 were identified by mass spectrometric analysis of phosphopeptides.</P><P><B>Structured summary</B></P><P>MINT-6800947:<I>CBRLK1</I> (uniprotkb:Q9ZT06) and <I>AtCaM2</I> (uniprotkb:P25069) <I>bind</I> (MI:0407) by <I>electrophoretic mobility shift assay</I> (MI:0413)</P><P>MINT-6800966:<I>AtCaM2</I> (uniprotkb:P25069) and <I>CBRLK1</I> (uniprotkb:Q9ZT06) <I>bind</I> (MI:0407) by <I>competition binding</I> (MI:0405)</P><P>MINT-6800930:<I>CBRLK1</I> (uniprotkb:Q9ZT06) <I>binds</I> (MI:0407) to <I>AtCaM2</I> (uniprotkb:P25069) by <I>far Western blotting</I> (MI:0047)</P><P>MINT-6800978:<I>AtCaM2</I> (uniprotkb:P25069) <I>physically interacts</I> (MI:0218) with <I>CBRLK1</I> (uniprotkb:Q9ZT06) by <I>cytoplasmic complementation assay</I> (MI:0228)</P>

A study on health and hygiene needs, strategies, and well‐being of an Aeta indigenous community in the Philippines through photovoice methods

        Yang EunMi,Kim Jwakyum,Biag Al,Mangulabnan Jefferson,Dela Cruz Arlan,Sarmiento Philip Joseph 한국사회복지학회 2020 Asian Social Work and Policy Review Vol.14 No.3

On a global scale, poor access to health and social welfare services for indigenous populations has threatened their overall well-being, especially those living in remote or peripheral areas. Academics from two higher education institutions in South Korea and the Philippines conducted a community-based research in an indigenous Aeta community in the highlands of Pampanga Province in the Philippines’ Central Luzon region. Using a photovoice method and community survey, they investigated family health and hygiene as well as the current strategies this indigenous community employs to address their concerns. Results revealed that the community lacks the basic human needs and services such as water, food, shelter, education, and health service. They demonstrated, however, resilience in managing their lives by making use of the available natural resources and by drawing strength from community spirit. This study provided insights on how higher education institutions and other concerned agencies craft initiatives intended to benefit vulnerable populations and underserved communities such as the indigenous peoples.

        Humanistic Approach in EFL Classes

        Seo, Eun-mi 대한언어학회 2000 언어학 Vol.8 No.3

Seo Eun-mi. 2000. Humanistic Approach in EFL Classes. Journal of the Linguistic Association of Korea, 8(3), 109-122. Humanistic education comes from humanistic psychology which emphasizes the inner nature of person. Humanistic approach is learner-centered since learners' feelings and emotions are considered important. In the humanistic classroom, students like to work in pairs and groups to share their experiences and memories in a very comfortable atmosphere. In this paper, I researched the effects of humanistic education and how teachers can use various activities to motivate shy Korean students. It is highly recommended to use this method in the EFL classroom. (Howon University)

Interlanguage Development in English Interrogatives by Two Korean Children

Yang, Eun Mi 대한언어학회 2000 언어학 Vol.8 No.1

Yang, Eun-Mi. 2000. Interlanguage Development in English Interrogatives by. Two Korean Children. Linguistics 8-1, 379-401. The purpose of this research is to compare the development of English question formation by the two Korean children who were attending elementary school and acquiring English in America for about 1 year and whose age difference is two years. (One is 7 years and the other is 9 years old then.) They were acquiring English mainly at school in natural environment and used Korean after school at home. Through this study I examined some prevailing hypothesis which argues for that older children are faster than younger children in acquiring second language and studied the order of acquisition of English structures according to age differences. This longitudinal study showed that both of them used 'overgeneralization' strategy for processing their interlanguage and produced systematic and rule-governed question forms, which support the hypothesis that universal cognitive mechanisms of strategies are the basis for the child's organization of the L2 system. • Apartments in Korea and Japan focused on analysis of unit plan changes form 1960's to 1990's

        Moon, Eun-Mi,Park, Hae-Sun 德成女子大學校 2005 德成女大論文集 Vol.34 No.-

Repellent efficacy of essential oils and plant extracts against Tribolium castaneum and Plodia interpunctella

        Lee Hwa‐Eun,Hong Su Jung,Hasan Najmul,Baek Eun Joo,Kim Jun Tae,Kim Young‐Duk,Park Mi‐Kyung 한국곤충학회 2020 Entomological Research Vol.50 No.9

This study was conducted to investigate the repellent efficacy of essential oils (Origanum vulgare, Pimpinella anisum, and Tanacetum cinerariifolium) and four plant extracts (Agastache rugosa, Capsicum annuum, Citrus reticulata, and Ginkgo biloba) against Tribolium castaneum (adults and larvae) and Plodia interpunctella (larvae). Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis revealed the presence of carvacrol, anethole, and jasmolin I as the predominant constituent in O. vulgare, P. anisum, and T. cinerariifolium, respectively. Furthermore, ethyl hexopyranoside, 9,12‐octadecadienoic acid, cyclopentanol, and 2‐cresol were identified in A. rugosa, C. annuum, C. reticulata, and G. biloba, respectively. The repellent efficacy of each essential oil, plant extract, and the combination of oils was evaluated using a specially designed cylinder trap for 120 h. Among the three oils, O. vulgare and T. cinerariifolium had greatest repellent efficacy against P. interpunctella larvae. T. cinerariifolium exhibited effective repellence against the adults and larvae of T. castaneum. Therefore, O. vulgare (O) and T. cinerariifolium (T) were selected for further investigation of combined effects. Two essential oils were mixed in three different ratios of OT1 (1:3), OT2 (1:1), and OT3 (3:1). The repellent efficacies of OT1 and OT2 against the adults of T. castaneum were significantly greater than that of OT3. OT1 was effective against the larvae of T. castaneum, whereas OT2 was effective against the larvae of P. interpunctella. OT1 enhanced the repellent efficacy by approximately five times against larvae of T. castaneum, compared with that of T. cinerariifolium. Overall, OT1 was selected as the best repellent substance against all the tested insects.
