Balancing energy use against video quality in mobile devices

<P>It is now common to access mobile video services through various Internet-connectable devices such as game stations, smartphones and tablets. This paper proposes a new energy management scheme for mobile devices by making use of the temporal scalability available in scalable video coding (SVC) techniques. The proposed scheme determines a quality index for each video segment, based on the pixel-wise difference between the luminance planes of consecutive frames at each frame-rate, and predicts the computation needed to decode each frame using data relating frame sizes to previous decoding times. A new dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) scheme is then invoked to achieve the specified quality index. The proposed scheme was implemented on a smartphone and a user test was conducted to assess the acceptability of different degree of frame-rate reduction. Real measurements showed that the proposed scheme uses between 5% and 41% less energy than the Linux DVFS governor used in many smartphones, while maintaining acceptable video quality.</P>

<P>Array-reader-based magnetic recording (ARMR) shows potential to achieve areal density capability (ADC) beyond 1 Tb/in<SUP>2</SUP> by jointly processing multiple readback streams. Dual-reader ARMR with two read sensors and associated read channel signal processing algorithms are currently being actively investigated. In this paper, dual-reader ARMR performance is evaluated focusing on skew-induced variation in cross-track separation (CTS) between the two read sensors. Spin-stand captured waveforms based evaluation is presented for the cases where a dual-reader with certain CTS and skew is emulated using captures from a single-reader at different cross-track locations as well as for the case of actual dual-reader-based captures, where the latter also accounts for head rotation. Based on bit error rate scan along cross-track under various squeezed recording and skew conditions, squeeze-to-death margin-based ADC gain of ARMR is predicted. Dual-reader ARMR shows 5%-10% ADC gain over single-reader for CTS less than 0.6 track pitch, while showing limited gains for larger CTS. Also presented is the performance evaluation of dual-reader ARMR on spin-stand using a hardware accelerated ARMR performance evaluation platform, called Stingray, which uses four Avago read channel silicon chips and a customized field programmable gate array to enable high-speed joint equalization and detection using dual-reader readback streams.</P>

2008년 사토시 나카모토(Satoshi Nakamoto)가 중앙 금융기관 없이 개인과 개인 간의 온라인 지불을 가능하게 하기 위하여 P2P(peer to peer) 네트워크를 이용한 이중지불 문제의 해결을 포함한 ‘비트코인(Bitcoin)’이라는 개인 간 전자화폐 시스템을 제안한 이후 블록체인은 4차 산업혁명에서 산업혁명 사이클 전주기에 영향을 미치는 범용기술로서 자리를 잡아가고 있다. 본 연구에서는 블록체인이 이러한 범용기술로서의 급격한 확산과 활용이 혁신이론 관점에서 어떠한 혁신성을 가지고 있는지를 분석하였다. 분석결과 블록체인은 ‘물리적 기술’의 특성뿐만 아니라 인간의 사회적 상호작용을 위한 ‘사회적 기술’로서의 특성을 가지고 있어 기술혁신과 사회혁신을 동시에 수반하는 혁신성을 가지고 있었다. 블록체인의 다양한 혁신성에 대한 본 연구의 접근은 블록체인의 이해를 높이고 향후 정책적 의사결정에 유용성을 제공할 것으로 기대된다. After Satoshi Nakamoto published ‘Bitcoin: A peer-to-peer electronic cash system’ in 2008, Blockchain has been GPT (General Purpose Technologies) that affect the whole cycle of the 4th Industrial Revolution. This study attempted to identify the innovativeness of Blockchain. Because of Blockchain’s ambidextrous characteristics, Blockchain has two kinds of innovativeness, technological innovation by physical technology and social innovation by social technology. Thus, this study will be useful to increase understanding and establishing strategy for Blockchain.
