The hybrid poplar, populus alba x. P.glandulosa F₁ shows a strong ability to produce root suckers. The relationship between crown density and root sucker was studied and the other factors that may be related to production of root sucker were also discussed. The possibility was also discussed to use its root suckers for fuelwood forests and vegetation in the area that erosion control is needed.
기상인자에 의한 우리나라 삼림수종의 (森林樹種) 생육범위 및 적지적수에 (適地適樹) 관한 연구

Sum of daily mean temperature, sum of daily mean relative humidity and sum of daily mean duration of sunshine during the growing season (March-October), and daily mean temperature, daily mean relative humidity and daily mean minimum temperature during the dormant season (November-February) were obtained respectively from the climactic data recorded at 26 different standard stations for 30 years from 1951 to 1980. to provide a method for proper selection of tree species suitable to a certain site. They were also marked on the map of Korea. The whole country was divided into 6 regions by trend of temperature variation and the regression equations for each region were produced to estimate the sum of daily mean temperature of the growing season and the sum of daily mean minimum temperature of the dormant season in a certain site where tree plantings are planned. The natural range of distribution of each species was expressed by the sum of daily mean temperature and daily mean minimum temperature on the basis of $quot;Horizontal and vertical distribution of the Korean woody plants$quot; reported by Chung and Lee (1965). These surveys were conducted to estimate the winter bird population inhabiting in the estuary of Nakdong River by unit distances, by unit times, by sections and by observation points. The results were summarized as follows: 1) A total of 70,032 birds were observed, which composed of 82 species under 27 families. 2) An average of 2,103.06 individuals per kilometer was observed and 23,344.00 individuals per hour. Anatidae showed the most dominance (65.13% of the total), followed by Scolopacidae(14.55%), and Laridae(7.28%). 3) The present population by areas were observed as follows; 61.8% of the total in the tideland and swamp, 31.9% in the surface of water, and 6.4% in the air and land, respectively. 4) Among the five sections, the greatest population was observed in section 3 which figured 22,852 individuals (30.0%), and the Least in section 4 (9.8%). 5) In this observation point, six species such as Anas platyrhynchos, Tadorna tadorna, Anser albifrons, Aythya ferina, Calidris alpina and Larus crassirostris were the most dominant birds inhabiting which reached 83.1 % of the total.

The survivals of loblolly pine, Pinus taeda L. was gradually increased from southeast to northwest in the species range and the provenances from southeast of the species range showed fast growth rate. It is suggested that the loblolly pine from Arkansas and Texas will be good for inland of Korea, and the trees from Maryland and North Carolina Piedmont will be suitable for the west coastal and east coastal region of Korea, and trees from North Carolina Coastal Plain will be promising one for south coastal region of Korea.

The broad sense heritability of height of clonal means was estimated from 18 clones out of 25 clones growing at four different sites, and it showed considerably high heritability of H²_(CM)=0.883. Therefore if we select the best one clone(5% selection), the genetic gain of 35.3% which is equal to 1.02m in height is expected to attain. If we select the best two clones(10% selection), the genetic gain will be 25.6 which is equal to 0.74m in height. Because the trees are only 4-year-old, it is expected to show higher genetic gain than the current gain when the trees reach to the age of final selection.

A study was conducted on the genetic correlations and simple correlations between some characters of the plus trees of Pinus densiflora. The results can be summarized as follows. 1. Simple correlations height growth by age was measured and high correlation(above r=-0.9) were observed. Therefore, early selection seems to be possible in the light of the results made up to 8 years old. 2. Genetic correlation between height and root collar diameter was 0.266 and the correlation between height and branch diameter was 0.091 and 0.391 was between root collar diameter and branch diameter.

Survival and height growth affected by cutting diameter were studied to find out the optimum size of cuttings in Populus nigra × p. maximowiczii F₁ clones. The size of the cuttings should be at least 8mm, when 80 percent of survival rate is considered as a standard. The height growth was increased with increase of cutting diameter for two months after planting and, after two months, effect of cutting diameter on height growth was decreased since July. However, the survival rate and height growth of large cuttings (above 13㎜) showed better than small cuttings (below 13㎜), when the cutting sizes are divided into two groups. Height growth per day was reached at peak during August, and then it was gradually decreased. It was considered that the height growth terminated in early 10 days of October.

Populus nigra${\times}$P. maximowiczii의 적정삽수(適正揷穗) 굵기를 구명(究明)하기 위하여 삽수직경별(揷穗直徑別) Clone별(別) 활착률(活着率)과 수고생장(樹高生長)을 연구(硏究)한 결과(結果)는 다음과 같다. 활착률(活着率) 80% 이상(以上)을 기준(基準)할 때 삽수(揷穗)굵기는 최소(最小) 8mm 이상(以上)이어야 하며 수고생장(樹高生長)과의 관계(關係)는 삽목(揷木) 후(後) 2개월(個月)까지는 삽수직경(揷穗直徑)이 클수록 수고(樹高)도 커지나 이러한 효과(?果)는 2개월(個月) 이후(以後) 즉(?) 7월(月)부터 점차 감소(減少)되는 경향(傾向)을 보였다. 삽수(揷樹)의 굵기가 13mm 이상(以上)되면 그 이하(以下)의 삽수(揷穗)보다도 현격(懸隔)히 활착률(活着率)(92.7%)이 높아지며 수고생장(樹高生長)도 좋아지는 경향(傾向)을 보였다. 일일수고생장(日日樹高生長)은 8월중(月中)에 최고점(最高點)에 달(達)했으며 이후(以後) 점차 감소(減少)하면서 10월(月) 상순(上旬)에는 거의 정지(停止)되는 것으로 추정(推定)된다.
