        Production and microwave electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of polyaniline-La2Ti2O7:Er,Yb composites

        In this research, La2Ti2O7 doped with erbium-ytterbium was produced by using solid state technique. A series of compoundswith the chemical equation (La1−x−yREx−y)2Ti2O7 were doped with (Er3+, x = 0.025, 0.050 ) and (Yb3+ y = 0.02 ) rare earth ionsprepared by conventional solid state reaction method at 1350 oC for 24 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were carried out for the structural analysis, which showedthat second phase did not form in (La1−x−yREx−y)2Ti2O7. Additionally, the polyaniline- erbium, ytterbium doped La2Ti2O7composites were fabricated via hot pressing using the compositions of (La0.955Yb0.02Er0.025)2Ti2O7, (La0.93Yb0.02Er0.05)2Ti2O7 andaniline. The weight ratios of erbium-ytterbium doped lanthanum titanate and aniline were 1:1 and 1:3 respectively, and epoxyresin was utilized to develop microwave shielding effectiveness composites. The microwave shielding effectiveness performancesof polyaniline- La2Ti2O7: erbium-ytterbium composites were examined by shielding effect in 0-8 GHz using two-port vectornetwork analyzer. A minimum of - 34.37 dB shielding effect performance was obtained in 6.27 GHz at the thickness of 2.0 mm. This shielding effect performance can be adjusted easily by managing the content of polyaniline in the composites for theneeded frequency bands.

        Electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3: chopped strands composites for wide frequency applications

        In this work, the conventional mixed oxide process was used to form Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-chopped strands composites. The singlephase compound with the chemical equation Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 was generated after sintering at 1250 °C for 4 h. Varied amountsof Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-chopped strands were fabricated for the structural examination. X-ray diffraction (XRD), energydispersiveX-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were carried out for the structural analysis, andthe results showed that the second phase did not form in Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3. In addition to, the Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-strandscomposites were created by hot pressing using the compositions of Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-chopped strands in various rates andepoxy. The Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-chopped strands compound created in varied weights, and epoxy powder were utilized tomanufacture microwave shielding effect composites. Using a two-port vector network analyser (VNA) device, the microwaveshielding effect of Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-chopped strands composites was examined in a range of 0-8 GHz. A minimal of -44.75 dBshielding effectiveness value was reached at 6.24 GHz and 1.4 mm in thick. The Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-chopped strands werefabricated as composite and their properties were defined characterized for shielding effectiveness. To modify microwaveshielding effectiveness, the content of components in the specimens may be adjusted for the wider and required frequencyranges.

      • A Microactuation and Sensing Platform With Active Lockdown for <i>In Situ</i> Calibration of Scale Factor Drifts in Dual-Axis Gyroscopes

        <P>This paper presents the design and experimental results of a microvibratory actuation and sensing platform to provide on-chip physical stimulus for in situ calibration of long-term scale factor drifts in multiaxis microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) inertial sensors. The platform consists of a three degrees-of-freedom micromotion stage that can provide piezoelectric actuation for X/Y-tilting reference stimuli, compensation of undesired off-axis motion, integrated sensing of applied periodic stimulus, and electrostatic position lock-down for shock protection. A dual-axis MEMS gyroscope is mounted on top of the microplatform, and its electrical interconnects are provided through microfabricated highly flexible parylene cables with virtually zero-loading. The piezoelectric stage is measured to provide up to 280°/s angular ac excitation to a 25-mg inertial sensor payload at an expense of <;100 μW, while providing an analog sensing signal (11 mV/°/s) to determine the applied rate with a precision of 1.2 °/s. The estimated scale factor has <; 0.8% deviation from rate-table characterized values on the same-model gyroscope samples. With further improvements in control precision and angular velocity estimation, the introduced platform is expected enable on-chip self-calibration of long-term scale-factor drifts to <; 100 ppm.</P>

        Analysis of the Orientational Order Parameter and the Magnetic Field as Functions of Temperature for p-anisaldazine

        We analyze in this study the orientational order parameter and the magnetic field as functions of temperature close to the nematic-isotropic liquid (NI) transition in anisaldazine. The experimental data from the literature are analyzed by using a power-law formula for both the orientational order parameter and the magnetic field, and the critical exponents are deduced. In particular, the mean field value of = 0.5 for the critical exponent of the orientational order parameter is used, and the power-law formula is fitted to the experimental data. Our fits and the values of the critical exponents for the temperature dependence of the orientational order parameter and the magnetic field indicate weak first-order transition, and they adequately describe the observed behavior of the nematic-isotropic liquid transition in anisaldazine.

        The Effects of using Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene and Fly Ash Together on the Resistance to Moisture-Induced Damage, Permanent Deformation and Fatigue of Hot Mixture Asphalt

        In this study, the effects of combined utilization of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) in bitumen modification and fly ash in modification of mixtures on the mechanical properties of hot mix asphalts were investigated. Within the scope of this study, 12different mixtures were obtained by combination of three different proportions of SBS additive relative to the total bitumen mass (0,3 and 6 wt.%) with four different proportions of fly ash replacement relative to the total aggregate mass (0, 2, 4 and 6 wt.%). As a result of these tests, the use of fly ash was found to reduce the Optimum Bitumen Content (OBC), while the use of SBS increased the OBC. It was determined that the individual utilization of SBS and fly ash improved the stability of the mixtures, resilience at normal temperatures, resistance against moisture-induced damage, fatigue life and strength against permanent deformation. In addition, it was found that using only SBS in bitumen modification at 3 wt.% without using fly ash and the use of only fly ash as filler at a proportion of 6 wt.% with pure bitumen yielded similar results. The combined usage of SBS and fly ash was ascertained to boost the associated positive effects, while a comparison of separate additions showed that SBS is more effective than fly ash. Besides, it was also detected that as the SBS content in the mixture increased, the effectiveness of fly ash decreased.

        On-chip capacitive sensing and tilting motion estimation of a micro-stage for <i>in situ</i> MEMS gyroscope calibration

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this paper, we introduce a novel on-chip capacitive sensor design and a motion estimation method for measuring multi-axis out-of-plane tilting motion of a micro-stage that is used for <I>in situ</I> calibration of an integrated MEMS gyroscope. On-chip sensing and motion estimation is critical for this application, since precision in measuring high frequency tilting motion of the micro-stage determines how accurately an on-stage MEMS gyroscope can be calibrated in the field with respect to this motion. To obtain decoupled sensing signals from multi-axis out-of-plane tilting motion, a capacitive sensing layout with high off-axis signal rejection capability is introduced. With the proposed design specifications and range of tilting motion, a dual axis capacitive sensor model is developed, and simulation results show that the sensor is able to reject more than 99.90% of the off-axis signal. The sensor also permits detection of perturbations to stage geometry due to ambient temperature variation through the effects of nonlinear behavior on signal timing. To measure tilting motion with the obtained sensing signal, a motion estimator with extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is also developed. With assistance of a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV), experiments are performed to identify the parameters of the motion estimator and validate its performance. The experimental results demonstrate a 286 ppm error in scale factor calibration of a commercial MEMS gyroscope by the micro-stage with moderate temperature variation.</P>

        Background/Aims Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders and when compared to the vast knowledge pertaining to adults with IBS, very little is known about IBS in children and adolescents. We aimed to explore the prevalence of IBS, identify symptoms and contributing factors and also to examine the efficacy of trimebutine maleate in children and adolescents. Methods The study involved 345 children and adolescents (4-18 years) and parents were requested to fill in a questionnaire, Rome III criteria was used to diagnose IBS. To exclude organic disease, all patients underwent medical investigations. Half of the randomly selected IBS patients were treated with trimebutine maleate while the rest of IBS patients were not. The IBS patients were reevaluated at the end of 3 weeks. Results The prevalence of IBS according to Rome III criteria in children and adolescents was 22.6% and IBS with constipation was the predominant subtype. Back pain (OR, 6.68), headache (OR, 4.72) and chronic fatigue (OR, 3.74) were significantly higher in IBS group. The prevalence of IBS in both parents and depression in mothers was greater for the patient group than the healthy controls (P <0.0001). The prevalence of functional dyspepsia in IBS group was 80.8% and was significantly higher than control group. Clinical recovery was seen in 94.9% of the trimebutine maleate group versus spontaneous recovery in 20.5% of the non-medicated group. The difference was significant (P < 0.0001). Conclusions IBS is a common disorder in children and adolescents. IBS is closely associated with somatic and familial factors. Trimebutine maleate is effective for pediatric IBS patients.
