        Incidentally Detected Cardiac Cyst Hydatid after Blunt Thoracic Trauma

        Cardiac involvement in hydatid disease is more seldom than the involvement of the liver and the lungs. Cardiac cyst hydatid disease is diagnosed incidentally or by means of symptoms such as dyspnea and angina pectoris. Here, we present the case of a 45-year-old male patient who underwent open heart surgery for a randomly detected cardiac cyst hydatid during investigations carried out in a healthcare institution after accidentally falling from height. On the other hand, this patient did not have any complaints associated with hydatid disease before this event.

        Linguistic and clinical validation of the Turkish version of Acute Cystitis Symptom Score for the diagnosis and patient-reported outcome in acute uncomplicated cystitis

        Purpose: The Acute Cystitis Symptom Score (ACSS) was developed as a self-reporting questionnaire for diagnosing and monitoring acute uncomplicated cystitis (AC) in female patients. The study aims at the translation of the ACSS into Turkish from the original Uzbek including its linguistic, cognitive and clinical validation. Materials and Methods: After forward and backward translation of the ACSS from Uzbek to Turkish and vice versa, the cognitive assessment of the Turkish ACSS was performed on 12 female subjects to achieve the final study version. Results: The clinical validation was performed on a total of 120 female respondents including 64 Patients with AC and 56 controls without AC. For clinical diagnosis of AC, the predefined summary score of the typical symptoms of >6 showed high values (95% confidence interval) for sensitivity (0.88 [0.77–0.94]), specificity (0.98 [0.91–1.00]), and diagnostic accuracy (0.93 [0.86–0.97]). All patients were followed up between five to nine days after the baseline visit. Forty-four (68.75%) patients used antimicrobial treatment, whereas the rest (31.25%) preferred non-antimicrobial treatment. The severity scores of the typical symptoms and the quality of life were reduced significantly at follow-up. Using different (favored) thresholds for successful and non-successful treatment a clinical success rate between 54.7% and 64.1% (60.9%) was achieved. Conclusions: After translation from the original Uzbek and cognitive assessment, the Turkish ACSS showed similar good results for clinical diagnosis and patient-reported outcome as in other languages validated so far and could therefore now be used for clinical studies as well as in everyday practice.

        Effect of surface treatments on the bond strength of indirect resin composite to resin matrix ceramics

        PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of an indirect resin composite (IRC) to the various resin matrix ceramic (RMC) blocks using different surface treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ninety-nine cubic RMC specimens consisting of a resin nanoceramic (RNC), a polymer-infiltrated hybrid ceramic (PIHC), and a flexible hybrid ceramic (FHC) were divided randomly into three surface treatment subgroups (n = 11). In the experimental groups, untreated (Cnt), tribochemical silica coating (Tbc), and Neodymium-Doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Nd:YAG) laser irradiation (Lsr) with 3 W (150 mJ/pulse, 20 Hz for 20 sec.) were used as surface treatments. An indirect composite resin (IRC) was layered with a disc-shape mold (2 × 3 mm) onto the treated-ceramic surfaces and the specimens submitted to thermal cycling (6000 cycles, 5 -55°C). The SBS test of specimens was performed using a universal testing machine and the specimens were examined with a scanning electron microscope to determine the failure mode. Data were statistically analyzed with two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD test (α=.05). RESULTS. According to the two-way ANOVA, only the surface treatment parameter was statistically significant (P<.05) on the SBS of IRC to RMC. The SBS values of Lsr-applied RMC groups were significantly higher than Cnt groups for each RMC material, (P<.05). Significant differences were also determined between Tbc surface treatment applied and untreated (Cnt) PIHC materials (P=.039). CONCLUSION. For promoting a reliable bond strength during characterization of RMC with IRC, Nd:YAG laser or Tbc surface treatment technique should be used, putting in consideration the microstructure and composition of RMC materials and appropriate parameters for each material.

      • Parallel DC-AC Conversion System Based on Separate Solar Farms with MPPT Control

        Three separate solar farms that provide 15 ㎾ power for each farm are modelled using Matlab Simulink real-time analysis software in this study. Each solar farm models are constituted by connecting 170W photovoltaic (PV) panels and energy conversion is performed with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms in each converter. The MPPT algorithm utilized in the control step of converters is developed using Perturb and Observe (P&O) structure. The converters used in the solar farms are designed in boost converter topology while output voltages are collected in DC busbar with parallel connection of converters. The converters are connected to busbar over interphase transformers (IPT). The DC busbar voltage is applied to a full bridge inverter to generate 3-phase AC voltages at the output of inverter. The three-phase inverter is controlled with sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) scheme, which is developed with phase shifted carrier signals. The load of inverter is set to an adjustable load, which is capable to be increased up to 50 ㎾. The measurement points seen in the Simulink design are analysed in detail. Each measurement point’s definition and screen captures are also evaluated in the study.

        Investigation of properties of boehmitic sol coated graphite added alumina-low cement castables

        In this study, benefiting from the low wettability of graphite, various amounts were added to low cement alumina castables to investigate the resistance of refractories to slag corrosion. For this purpose, typically flake graphite was coated with alumina by a sol-gel method and then added to a mixture of the refractory in various amounts. After the physicomechanical investigation, steel ladle slag with a basicity ratio of 2.29 was charged into the crucibles which were prepared according to DIN 51069 standard. After the heat treatment, samples were cut vertically for investigation. For macroscopic analysis, images taken from the slag-refractory surfaces were digitized and subjected to image analyses to investigate the penetration of the slag. Microscopic analyses were carried out with SEM-EDS to determine the elemental dispersion at the refractory-slag interaction zone. Experimental results indicate that the alumina coated graphite addition give improved slag corrosion resistance of alumina castables.

        Is There a Relationship Between Corporate Governance and Value-based Financial Performance Measures? A Study of Turkey as an Emerging Market

        The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship of value-based performance measures – economic value added (EVA), market value added (MVA) and cash value added (CVA) – with corporate governance using data on 41 corporations listed on the Istanbul Stock Exchange-100 Index. Multiple panel regression is used covering the 1998–2007 period. The findings indicate that EVA, MVA, and CVA increase if the CEO is a member of the board at the same time, and board size does not significantly affect performance. Ownership concentration is significantly related to all performance measures except for MVA, while manager ownership is not a significant variable in increasing corporate performance. Foreign ownership is found to increase EVA but decrease MVA.

        Influence of heating rate on the flexural strength of monolithic zirconia

        PURPOSE. Fabrication of zirconia restorations with ideal mechanical properties in a short period is a great challenge for clinicians. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of heating rate on the mechanical and microstructural properties of monolithic zirconia. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Forty monolithic zirconia specimens were prepared from presintered monolithic zirconia blanks. All specimens were then assigned to 4 groups according to heating rate as Control, Group 15°C, Group 20°C, and Group 40°C. All groups were sintered according to heating rates with the sintering temperature of 1500°C, a holding time of 90 minutes and natural cooling. The phase composition was examined by XRD analysis, three-point bending test was conducted to examine the flexural strength, and Weibull analysis was conducted to determine weibull modulus and characteristic strength. Average grain sizes were determined by SEM analysis. One-way ANOVA test was performed at a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS. Only tetragonal phase characteristic peaks were determined on the surface of analyzed specimens. Differences among the average grain sizes of the groups were not statistically significant. The results of the three-point bending test revealed no significant differences among the flexural strength of the groups (P>.05). Weibull modulus of groups was ranging from 3.50 to 4.74. The highest and the lowest characteristic strength values were obtained in Group 20°C and Control Group, respectively. CONCLUSION. Heating rate has no significant effect on the flexural strength of monolithic zirconia. Monolithic zirconia restorations can be produced in shorter sintering periods without affecting the flexural strength by modifying the heating rate.

        Properties of a Cu2ZnSnS4 Absorber Layer Fabricated by Dip Coating with a Sulfurized Cu, Zn, Sn Precursor and Annealing

        Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) thin films were prepared on soda lime glass by dip coating with sulfurized Cu, Zn, Sn precursors, N2 gas jet flattening, and annealing under an Ar+H2S atmosphere, which is a simple and inexpensive process for large-area thin-film preparation, and the influence of the Cu/(Zn+Sn) ratio on the properties of the film were investigated. Copper (II) acetate monohydrate, zinc (II) acetate dihydrate, tin (II) chloride dihydrate and thiourea dissolved in an ethanol solution were used for the preparation of the sulfurized Cu, Zn and Sn precursors as a low-cost raw materials for chemical bath deposition, and dip coating of the precursors and annealing under an Ar+H2S atmosphere were applied to prepare kesterite CZTS films on substrates. Sulfurization under an Ar+H2S atmosphere enhanced CZTS formation with no zinc oxide and adhesion on the soda lime glass. As the Cu/(Zn+Sn) ratio was increased in the film,the grain size and the film density increased whereas the band gap energy and the resistivity decreased. All films exhibited a p-type semi-conductivity with a high carrier concentration.

        Surgery for intractable pain in a patient with chronic pancreatitis complicated with biliary obstruction, portal vein stenosis and mesenteric venous collaterals

        Pancreatic head resection for chronic pancreatitis is a challenging procedure, in the presence of venous collaterals, cavernous transformation, extensive fibrosis or porto-mesenteric stenosis or thrombosis. We present a surgically treated patient for the intractable pain of chronic pancreatitis. Complications with biliary obstruction and portal vein stenosis/thrombosis resulted in cavernous transformation. A pancreaticoduodenectomy combined with portal vein resection was intended in a 51 year-old male, but the procedure was terminated due to the high risk associated with intraoperative bleeding. The surgical procedure was switched to a Frey procedure, wherein partial pancreatic head resection, drainage of the pancreatic canal and sufficient pain palliation, without an increased risk of intraoperative hemorrhage, was ensured. The procedure was successfully combined with bilio-enteric anastomosis.

        Thiol Disulfide Homeostasis in Schizophrenic Patients Using Atypical Antipsychotic Drugs

        Objective: Schizophrenia is a severe, debilitating mental disorder characterized by behavioral abnormalities. Although several studies have investigated the role of oxidative stress and the effects of antipsychotic drugs on oxidative markers in schizophrenia, adequate information is not available on these issues. The aim of this study is to determine the changes in oxidative status and thiol disulfide homeostasis in schizophrenic patients using atypical antipsychotic drugs. Methods: Thirteen schizophrenic patients using atypical antipsychotic drugs and 30 healthy controls were included this study. The concentrations of total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), native thiol, total thiol, and disulfide levels were determined in the study population. Results: The TAS (p=0.001), total thiol, and native thiol levels (p<0.001) were higher in the patients compared to the controls, whereas the TOS and disulfide levels were lower in the patients than in the controls (p<0.001). Conclusion: These results may suggest that atypical antipsychotic drugs have a useful therapeutic effect by reducing oxidative stress via the inhibition of the formation of disulfide bonds. The study population number was one of the limitations of this study. Therefore, further studies are needed to establish the association between thiol disulfide homeostasis in schizophrenic patients using atypical antipsychotic drugs
