Experimental and numerical research on ballistic performance of carbon steels and cold worked tool steels with and without Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating

Erdi Ergül,Emre Doruk,Murat Pakdil 국제구조공학회 2017 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.23 No.2

It is extremely important to be aware of the ballistic performances of engineering materials in order to be able to choose the lightest armor providing full ballistic protection in civil and military applications. Therefore, ballistic tests are an important part of armor design process. In this study, ballistic performance of plates made of carbon steel and cold worked tool steel against 7.62 mm AP (armor-piercing) bullets was examined experimentally and numerically in accordance with NIJ standards. Samples in different sizes were prepared to demonstrate the effect of target thickness on ballistic performance. Some of these samples were coated with titanium nitride using physical vapor deposition (PVD) method. After examining all successful and unsuccessful samples at macro and micro levels, factors affecting ballistic performance were determined. Explicit non-linear analyses were made using Ls-Dyna software in order to confirm physical ballistic test results. It was observed that the ballistic features of steel plates used in simulations comply with actual physical test results.

Serum Levels of 8-Iso-Prostaglandin F2α and Raftlin in Patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Onur Hursitoğlu(Onur Hursitoğlu ),Ergül Belge Kurutas(Ergül Belge Kurutas ) 대한정신약물학회 2023 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.21 No.2

Objective: Although there are neurobiological studies of patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), the topic is still open to research. Lipid peroxidation can generate new molecular signal sequences by altering protein amounts and activity. 8-Iso-Prostaglandin F2α (8-iso-PGF2α) is known to be an important lipid peroxidation marker. Raftlin, which is defined as a major lipid raft protein, is important for the regulation of signal transduction and inflammatory processes. Methods: Our aim in this study was to compare the 8-iso-PGF2α and Raftlin levels of forty patients diagnosed with GAD and 40 healthy controls (age-sex and body mass index-matched). Results: In the present study, increased serum 8-iso-PGF2α and Raftlin levels were found in patients with GAD compared to healthy controls. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first study to examine 8-iso-PGF2α and Raftlin levels in patients with GAD. These results expand our knowledge of oxidative stress and inflammatory processes in patients with GAD. Our study should be considered preliminary and further studies should be performed with larger sample groups comparing values before and after treatment.

Physiology and Gene Expression Analysis of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) Exposed to Combined-Virus and Drought Stresses

        Samra Mirzayeva,Irada Huseynova,Canan Yüksel Özmen,Ali Ergül 한국식물병리학회 2023 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.39 No.5

Crop productivity can be obstructed by various biotic and abiotic stresses and thus these stresses are a threat to universal food security. The information on the use of viruses providing efficacy to plants facing growth challenges owing to stress is lacking. The role of induction of pathogen-related genes by microbes is also colossal in drought-endurance acquisition. Studies put forward the importance of viruses as sustainable means for defending plants against dual stress. A fundamental part of research focuses on a positive interplay between viruses and plants. Notably, the tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) and tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV) possess the capacity to safeguard tomato host plants against severe drought conditions. This study aims to explore the combined effects of TYLCV, ToCV, and drought stress on two tomato cultivars, Money Maker (MK, UK) and Shalala (SH, Azerbaijan). The expression of pathogenrelated four cellulose synthase gene families (CesA/Csl) which have been implicated in drought and virus resistance based on gene expression analysis, was assessed using the quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction method. The molecular tests revealed significant upregulation of Ces-A2, Csl-D3,2, and Csl-D3,1 genes in TYLCV and ToCV-infected tomato plants. CesA/Csl genes, responsible for biosynthesis within the MK and SH tomato cultivars, play a role in defending against TYLCV and ToCV. Additionally, physiological parameters such as “relative water content,” “specific leaf weight,” “leaf area,” and “dry biomass” were measured in dual-stressed tomatoes. Using these features, it might be possible to cultivate TYLCV-resistant plants during seasons characterized by water scarcity.

The Levels of Vitamin D, Vitamin D Receptor, Homocysteine and Complex B Vitamin in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

        Hatice Altun,Ergül Belge Kurutaş,Nilfer Şahin,Olcay Güngör,Ebru Fındıklı 대한정신약물학회 2018 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.16 No.4

Objective: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental syndrome with an increasingly prevalent etiology, yet not fully understood. It has been thought that vitamin D, complex B vitamin levels and homocysteine are associated with environmental factors and are important in ASD. The aim of this study was to examine serum vitamin D, vitamin D receptor (VDR), homocysteine, vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and folate levels in ASD. Methods: In this study, serum vitamin D and VDR, homocysteine, vitamins B6, B12 and folate levels were determined in 60 patients with ASD (aged 3 to 12 years) and in 45 age-gender matched healthy controls. In addition, calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase, which are associated with vitamin D metabolism, were measured from serum in both groups. ASD severity was evaluted by the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). Results: Serum vitamin D and VDR were substantially reduced in patients with ASD in comparision to control group. However, homocysteine level was significantly higher and vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and folate were also reduced in patients with ASD. Total CARS score showed a positive association with homocysteine and a negative correlation with vitamins D,B6, B12, folate and VDR. Conclusion: This comprehensive study, which examines many parameters has shown that low serum levels of vitamins D, B6, B12, folate and VDR as well as high homocysteine are important in the etiopathogenesis of ASD. However, further studies are required to define the precise mechanism(s) of these parameters and their contributions to the etiology and treatment of ASD.

ON A CLASS OF PERFECT RINGS

        ( Arzu Olgun ),( Ergül Türkmen ) 호남수학회 2020 호남수학학술지 Vol.42 No.3

A module M is called ss-semilocal if every submodule U of M has a weak supplement V in M such that U∩V is semisimple. In this paper, we provide the basic properties of ss-semilocal modules. In particular, it is proved that, for a ring R, RR is ss- semilocal if and only if every left R-module is ss-semilocal if and only if R is semilocal and Rad(R) ⊆ Soc(RR). We define projective ss-covers and prove the rings with the property that every (simple) module has a projective ss-cover are ss-semilocal.

        Ebru Findikli,Ergül Belge Kurutas,Mehmet Akif Camkurt,Mehmet Fatih Karaaslan,Filiz Izci,Hüseyin Avni Fındıklı,Selçuk Kardaş,Berat Dag,Hatice Altun 대한정신약물학회 2017 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.15 No.4

Objective: The facts that depression is more prevalent in females than in males and females are exposed to depression more commonly during certain hormonal fluctuating periods indicate the role of sex hormones in physiopathology. Estrogen acts over estrogen receptors alpha and beta and recently identified G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER1). The present study aimed, for the first time, to evaluate serum GPER1 levels in drug-naïve major depressive disorder (MDD) patients. Methods: The study included 56 newly diagnosed drug-naïve MDD patients aged between 18 and 50 years and 42 age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers. Medical history was obtained and physical examinations, laboratory tests, and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) were performed. The serum GPER1 levels were measured. Results: The HAM-D score was significantly higher in the MDD patients than in the controls. The GPER1 level was significantly higher in the MDD patients than in the controls. A positive correlation was found with GPER1 levels and depression scores. The receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value as 82.1%, 90.5%, 92.0%, and 79.2%, respectively, for the presence of depression, when the serum GPER1 value was ≥0.16. Conclusion: This study demonstrated significantly higher serum GPER1 levels in the MDD patients than in the controls, a positive correlation was found between GPER1 levels and depression scores and serum GPER1 level was valuable in predicting the presence of depression.

Transcriptomic analysis of endoplasmic reticulum stress in roots of grapevine rootstock

Aydemir Birsen Çakır,Ergül Ali 한국식물생명공학회 2021 Plant biotechnology reports Vol.15 No.5

Grapevine roots are largely subjected to adverse environmental stresses. To maintain cellular hemostasis during different environmental conditions, cells develop reponse known as endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response. However, the cel- lular mechanism of grapevine rootstocks roots has not been studied in detail under conditions of ER stress. In this study, transcriptome analysis has been performed to determine ER-related transcripts in grapevine rootstock induced with tunica- mycin (TM) or dithiothreitol (DTT), causing proteins misfolding in ER, and consequently triggers ER stress. According to the results, 640 genes were expressed differently in the two treatment groups. Out of these, 397 transcripts were found to be associated with tunicamycin treatment. Among tunicamycin-responsive genes increased expression profiles were recorded for 287 genes while the remaining and 110 genes showed decreased expression profile. In contrast, in DTT-treated plants, a total of 557 genes were differentially expressed, 345 of which were upregulated, and 212 were downregulated. In addition, we identified 50 transcripts common to both TM and DTT treatments. TM and DTT treatments increased the expression of transcription factors, the hormone biosynthesis pathway genes. Gene ontology classified genes in groups involving protein folding, oxidative stress, protein phosphorylation, transmembrane transport, transcription and proteolysis regulation. Gene transcripts results revealed genes that may play a significant effect in the response to ER stress of rootstocks root. Considering the results reported here explaining the possible mechanisms of how plants adapt to environmental stresses, an important information gap has been bridged by providing new insights into the ER stress mechanisms in plant roots.

Management and Outcome of Intracranial Dural Arteriovenous Fistulas That Have Caused a Hemorrhage in the Posterior Fossa : A Clinical Study

        Rıfat Akdag,Uğur Soylu,Ergün Dağlıoğlu,İlkay Akmangit,Vedat Açık,Ahmet Deniz Belen 대한신경외과학회 2023 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.66 No.6

Objective : We evaluated the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term results of patients with dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF), which is a very rare cause of posterior fossa hemorrhage. Methods : This study included 15 patients who underwent endovascular, surgical, combined, or Gamma Knife treatments between 2012 and 2020. Demographics and clinical features, angiographic features, treatment modalities, and outcomes were analyzed. Results : The mean age of the patients was 40±17 years (range, 17–68), and 68% were men (11/15). Seven of the patients (46.6%) were in the age group of 50 years and older. While the mean Glasgow coma scale was 11.5±3.9 (range, 4–15), 46.3% presented with headache and 53.7% had stupor/coma. Four patients (26.6%) had only cerebellar hematoma and headache. All dAVFs had cortical venous drainage. In 11 patients (73.3%), the fistula was located in the tentorium and was the most common localization. Three patients (20%) had transverse and sigmoid sinus localizations, while one patient (6.7%) had dAVF located in the foramen magnum. Eighteen sessions were performed on the patients during endovascular treatment. Sixteen sessions (88.8%) were performed with the transarterial (TA) route, one session (5.5%) with the transvenous (TV) route, and one session (5.5%) with the TA+TV route. Surgery was performed in two patients (14.2%). One patient (7.1%) passed away. While there were nine patients (64.2%) with a Rankin score between 0 and 2, the total closure rate was 69.2% in the first year of control angiograms. Conclusion : In the differential diagnosis of posterior fossa hemorrhages, the differential diagnosis of dAVFs, which is a very rare entity, should be considered, even in the middle and elderly age groups, in patients presenting with good clinical status and pure hematoma. The treatment of such patients can be done safely and effectively in a multidisciplinary manner with a good understanding of pathological vascular anatomy and appropriate endovascular treatment approaches.

        Semih Engez,Pelin Baskan,Bülent Ergönül 한국축산식품학회 2012 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.32 No.3

Six different types of biltong samples were manufactured from beef which was slowly frozen, quickly frozen or unfrozen. After marinating the samples according to the formulation used, meats were dried at two different temperatures (28±1oC or 42±1oC) until they lost half of their weights. Chemical, instrumental textural and sensorial analyses were done for determination of the most preferred sample and to compare the attributes of the samples with each other. It was found that, aw values of the samples were among 0.81 and 0.83, whereas water contents were changing among the values 39.64% and 45.37%. There were no significant differences determined among the protein contents of the biltong samples (p>0.05). Fat, ash and salt contents of the samples were among the values 1.32% and 2.07%, 5.30% and 6.06%, 2.68% and 3.30% respectively. Hardness of the samples were found between 34.81 N and 44.13 N and there was no significant difference observed among the hardness values of the biltong samples (p>0.05). As results of the analyses, it can be concluded that the highest flavor, color, tenderness and overall acceptability scores were obtained for the sample QF-LT which was made from quickly frozen beef and was dried at low temperature (28±1oC) (p<0.05).

Multilevel Noncontiguous Spinal Fractures: Surgical Approach towards Clinical Characteristics

        Mehmet Seçer,Fatih Alagöz,Ozhan Uçkun,Oğuz Durmuş Karakoyun,Murat Ömer Ulutaş,Ömer Polat,Ergün Dağlıoğlu,Ali Dalgıç,Deniz Belen 대한척추외과학회 2015 Asian Spine Journal Vol.9 No.6

Study Design: The study retrospectively investigated 15 cases with multilevel noncontiguous spinal fractures (MNSF). Purpose: To clarify the evaluation of true diagnosis and to plane the surgical treatment. Overview of Literature: MNSF are defined as fractures of the vertebral column at more than one level. High-energy injuries caused MNSF, with an incidence ranging from 1.6% to 16.7%. MNSF may be misdiagnosed due to lack of detailed neurological and radiological examinations. Methods: Patients with metabolic, rheumatologic diseases and neoplasms were excluded. Despite the presence of a spinal fracture associated clearly with the clinical picture, all patients were scanned within spinal column by direct X-rays, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. When there were ≥5 intact vertebrae between two fractured vertebral segments, each fracture region was managed with a separated stabilization. In cases with ≤4 intact segments between two fractured levels, both fractures were fixed with the same rod and screw system. Results: There were 32 vertebra fractures in 15 patients. Eleven (73.3%) patients were male and age ranged from 20 to 64 years (35.9±13.7 years). Eleven cases were the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) E, 3 were ASIA A, and one was ASIA D. Ten of the 15 (66.7%) patients returned to previous social status without additional deficit or morbidity. The remaining 5 (33.3%) patients had mild or moderate improvement after surgery. Conclusions: The spinal column should always be scanned to rule out a secondary or tertiary vertebra fracture in vertebral fractures associated with high-energy trauma. In MNSF, each fracture should be separately evaluated for decision of surgery and planned approach needs particular care. In MNSF with ≤4 intact vertebra in between, stabilization of one segment should prompt the involvement of the secondary fracture into the system.
