Background: We sought to determine the association between chronic pain and participating in routine health screening in a low socioeconomic-status (SES) rental-flat community in Singapore. In Singapore, ≥ 85% own homes; public rental flats are reserved for those with low-income. Methods: Chronic pain was defined as pain ≥ 3 months. From 2009-2014, residents aged 40-60 years in five public rental-flat enclaves were surveyed for chronic pain; participation in health screening was also measured. We compared them to residents staying in adjacent owner-occupied public housing. We also conducted a qualitative study to better understand the relationship between chronic pain and health screening participation amongst residents in these low-SES enclaves. Results: In the rental-flat population, chronic pain was associated with higher participation in screening for diabetes (aOR = 2.11, CI = 1.36-3.27, P < 0.001), dyslipidemia (aOR = 2.06, CI = 1.25-3.39, P = 0.005), colorectal cancer (aOR = 2.28, CI = 1.18-4.40, P = 0.014), cervical cancer (aOR = 2.65, CI = 1.34-5.23, P = 0.005) and breast cancer (aOR = 3.52, CI = 1.94-6.41, P < 0.001); this association was not present in the owner-occupied population. Three main themes emerged from our qualitative analysis of the link between chronic pain and screening participation: pain as an association of “major illness”; screening as a search for answers to pain; and labelling pain as an end in itself. Conclusions: Chronic pain was associated with higher cardiovascular and cancer screening participation in the low-SES population. In low-SES populations with limited access to pain management services, chronic pain issues may surface during routine health screening. (Korean J Pain 2017; 30: 34-43)

p13 gene was first described in Leucania separata multinuclear polyhedrosis virus (Ls-p13) several years ago, but the function of P13 protein has not been experimentally investigated to date. In this article, we indicated that the expression of p13 from Heliothis armigera single nucleocapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (Ha-p13) was regulated by both early and late promoter. Luciferase assay demonstrated that the activity of Ha-p13 promoter with hr4 enhancer was more than 100 times in heterologous Sf9 cells than that in nature host Hz-AM1 cells. Both Ls-P13 and Ha-P13 are transmembrane proteins. Confocal microscopic analysis showed that both mainly located in the cytoplasm membrane at 48 h. Results of RNA interference indicated that Ha-p13 was a killing-associated gene for host insects H. armigera. The AcMNPV acquired the mentioned killing activity and markedly accelerate the killing rate when expressing Ls-p13. In conclusion, p13 is a killing associated gene in both homologous and heterologous nucleopolyhedrovirus. [BMB Reports 2012; 45(12): 730-735]
Computation of pressure fluctuation frequency in electronic unit pump for diesel engine
Tian Bing-qi,Fan Li-yun,Qaisar Hayat,Ma Xiuzhen,Song En-zhe,Hao Wang 대한기계학회 2014 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.28 No.4
Pressure variations inside a fuel injection system can lead to fluctuations in injected fuel quantity during injections and therefore candirectly impact the stability and performance coherence of the fuel injection system and the engine it matched. Concepts of hydrauliccapacitance and hydraulic inductance are introduced into fuel injection system by referencing LC oscillator electric circuit. A LC undampedhydraulic mathematical model is developed based on the structural parameters of the electronic unit pump (EUP). Pressure fluctuationfrequency during injection process at different operating conditions of the EUP is computed by the LC undamped model. It isobserved that the frequencies of pressure fluctuations tend to increase with the fuel injection process. Pressure curves and pressure fluctuationfrequencies obtained by experiments at different operating conditions validated the results predicted by the LC undampedmathematical model.
The diathermy scratch pad: A cheap and efficient tool for chemical and explosion-related burns
Allen Wei-Jiat Wong,Qi En Hong,Cheryl Li Yu Hui,Si Jack Chong 대한성형외과학회 2019 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.46 No.1
The burn center in our hospital is a national and regional (Southeast Asia) center. Of all admissions, 10% are related to blast explosions, and 8% due to chemical burns. In the acute burn management protocol of Singapore General Hospital, early surgical debridement is advocated for all acute partial-thickness burns. The aim of early surgical debridement is to remove all debris and unhealthy tissue, preventing wound infection and thereby expediting wound healing. In chemical burns, there can be stubborn eschars that are resistant to traditional debridement. We would like to present a novel technique using the diathermy scratch pad as a cheap and efficient tool for the dual purpose of surgical debridement and dermabrasion.

The purpose of this study was to develop a nasal in situ gel system for Radix Bupleuri employing gellan gum as a polymer. Radix Bupleuri in situ gel containing 0.2 mL essential oil extracted from 450 g Radix Bupleuri, proper solubilizing agents and gellan gum (0.5% w/v) was prepared and characterized. The antipyretic effect produced by in situ gel formulation was investigated in fevered rabbits and compared to an intranasal solution. The resulting in situ gel was a clear and light-yellow liquid, with viscosity of 346 $mPa{\cdot}s$ and caproic acid content of $1.31{\pm}$ 0.01 mg/mL. Intranasal administration of this preparation to fevered rabbits decreased body temperature markedly ($1.1^{\circ}C$ at the doses of oil from 1.5 g Bupleuri/body) and the effect could last for 20-30 h. The results suggest that Radix Bupleuri in situ gel can be greater effective than the solution in the treatment of fever.

The solvent-free modification of butyl rubber in the medium of NaH
Ying Feng,Yan Xia Wang,Hong Qi Shao,En Hua Zhang,Zhen Wang,Jiruo Zhao 한국공업화학회 2014 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.20 No.1
A novel improved butyl rubber (PMIIR) was prepared in a solvent free process, using sodium hydride(NaH) as activating agent and maleic anhydride (MAH) as modifier by processing modificationtechnology in a conventional polymer processing equipment of an internal mixer. The structure ofproducts was characterized by 1H NMR and FT-IR. In this process, polar sodium carboxylate functionalgroup and unsaturated carbon–carbon double bonds were successfully introduced onto the chains of IIRon one step. The reaction mechanism was investigated in detail. It was found that the functionalizationexperienced two modified mechanisms: addition and substitution modified mechanisms. The reactionefficiency and content of MAH were evaluated. Polymer isolation and purification operations werereduced out due to the result of solvent free. Curing and mechanical properties of products wereinvestigated. It was found that PMIIR has greatly increased curing rate due to the incorporation of polargroup and carbon–carbon double bond.
Identification and Functional Analysis of LsMNPV Anti-apoptosis Genes
Kim, Yu-Sin,Xiao, Hua-Zhong,Du, En-Qi,Cai, Guo-Shuai,Lu, Song-Ya,Qi, Yi-Peng Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biol 2007 Journal of biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.40 No.4
Three anti-apoptosis genes, Ls-iap2, iap3 and p49 were found in Leucania separata multiple nuclear polyhedrovirus. Amino acid sequence homology of Ls-IAP2 and Ls-IAP3 with Op-IAP2 and Op-IAP3 from Orgyia pseddotsugata MNPV were 20% and 42%, while that of Ls-P49 is 28% with Sl-P49 from Spodoptera littorolis MNPV. Ls-IAP2 contains one baculoviral IAP repeat (BIR) domain followed by a RING domain, while Ls-IAP3 contains two BIRs and a RING. Ls-P49 contains a reactive site loop, predicted cleavage site (KKLD$^{74}{\downarrow}$G) that is different from Sl-P49 (TVID$^{94}{\downarrow}$G). Expressed Ls-iap3 or Ls-p49 under presence of actinomycin D in SF9 cells, DNA ladder assayrevealed that Ls- IAP3 or Ls-P49 could block the apoptosis of SF9 cells induced by actinomycin D. Replication of p35 deficient-mutant Autographa californica MNPV in SF9 cells was also rescued when Ls-iap3 or Ls-p49 was expressed transiently. No anti-apoptotic activity was observed for Ls-IAP2. The results showed that both of Ls-IAP3 and Ls-P49 were functional apoptotic suppressors in SF9 cells.
