Commemoration of Dead Animals in Contemporary Korea: Emergence and Development of Dongmul Wiryeongje as Modern Folklore

Elmer Veldkamp 한국학중앙연구원 한국학중앙연구원 2008 THE REVIEW OF KOREAN STUDIES Vol.11 No.3

This paper looks at the continuously changing nature of contemporary folklore by focusing on the practice of praying for the souls of dead animals in ceremonies referred to as dongmul wiryeongje in contemporary Korea. From the 1990s onwards, Korean newspapers have increasingly reported on these ceremonies as held at animal laboratories, zoos, and other locations where animals have died or have been killed in their service for humans. Attitudes toward animals in Korea have undergone much change in the last twenty years. With the recent pet boom and active animal activism, animals have become a significant subject of debate in Korea. However, there remains a lack of interest in animal-related issues in studies of Korean culture up to the present. Part of the reason for this may be contributed to the human-centered character of Korean society. In addition, preceding studies of Korean animal folklore have mainly focused on long-term continuity of certain cultural elements and symbols, i.e., tradition. By looking into the history and contemporary situation of these dongmul wiryeongje, the author will show how focusing on changing human-animal relationships can bring new insights to the everchanging nature of folk culture in Korea. KEEPING IT REAL : THE EXHIBITION OF ARTIFACT REPLICAS IN NATIONAL MUSEUMS OF KOREA

ELMER VELDKAMP 계명대학교 한국학연구원 2014 Acta Koreana Vol.17 No.2

A significant number of museums in Korea make use of replicated artifacts in their displays, regardless of the emphasis that is put on the importance of showing original heritage artifacts. By looking at examples of replicated artifacts in Korean national museums, this article attempts to assess the relevancy (or irrelevancy) of having authentic objects in museum displays, as opposed to contemporary replicas of these artifacts. The curation of Korean art and culture is approached from the perspective of reality or a ‘felt past’ that visitors are able to experience in museum exhibitions. Although the original and the replicated object are intrinsically different, the influence replica display has on visitor experience and display integrity varies according to the expectations and goals of viewing of the observing party.

      • The Fourfold Gospel from a Pentecostal Historical Perspective

Elmer Masters 서울신학대학교 글로벌사중복음연구소 2021 World Christianity and the Fourfold Gosepl Vol.6 No.1

It is my humble opinion that the gravest errors of Pentecostalism are in the following two areas: exegesis and hermeneutics. We have relied upon other Christian denominations to fill this gap. Most evangelical groups have developed their hermeneutical and exegetical approaches to their persuasion of theology. Interesting to me was the discovery that the late great theologian and author Dr. Donald W. Dayton alluded to this fact. During the last half of the 1970’s two Assemblies of God scholars joined forces to begin addressing this issue: Dr. Gordon D. Fee and Dr. Russell P. Spittler we have shown that there has been an historical approach in Pentecost which embraced a four-fold theology of the Gospel from its inception. It was articulated from both the Topeka, Kansas Revival and the Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles, California. This was included the Articles of Constitutions, Statements of Faith, the development of Bible Institutes, Schools and Colleges, as well as their writings which includes textbooks. It is my present observation that this present generation of young Pentecostal ministers, in America, are on the verge of abandoning their historical roots (out of text)

Farmer’s Perception on Farm mechanization and Land reformation in the Philippines

        Elmer G. Bautista,Jong-sun Kim,Yun-jung Kim,Maria Evic Panganiban 한국국제농업개발학회 2017 韓國國際農業開發學會誌 Vol.29 No.3

This paper describes Philippine farmers’ perception on farm mechanization and land reformation. For a survey, 280 farmers were interviewed. According to the survey, Philippine farmerrespondents seem to recognize the many advantages of using farm machines over manual, even if these are expensive and will certainly displace laborers. Although land reformation is known to only one third of the farmers, they understand it as a way of re-structuring roads and fields, and will ease farm management. Philippine farmers’ awareness of farm mechanization and land reformation appears to be very low and they also have financial problems when they consider to adopt farm mechanization and land reformation. Therefor, it is very essential to raise farmer’s awareness and also provide financial subsidy to farmers who have willingness to adopt mechanization and land reformation. Also introduction of farm land bank system like korean experience is recommended as one of alternatives.

      • Poster Session:PS 0531 ; Nephrology : Correlational Study Between Ankle- Brachial Index and Quality of Life among End Stage Renal Dialysis Filipino Patients Using the Kidney Disease and Quality of Life Short Form (KDQOL-SF Tm Version 1.3) - Filipino Versi

( John Elmer Cabang Quilisadio ),( Aryeel Delacruz Llanos ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Background: The paper was conducted to determine whether there is a signifi cant association between ankle- brachial index and the quality of life among filipino patients on chronic hemodialysis using the Kidney Disease Quality of Life- Short Form (KDQOL-SF version 1.3) filipino version questionnaire. Methods: This study was a prospective, multi- center, analytical study which covered tertiary-level, government, training hospital and private hospitals in Davao del Norte. Respondents include patients with end stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis, ages 18 years old and above and those who could speak and understand filipino language. ABI measurement was conducted using Doppler sonar equipment and a sphygmomanometer. The KDQOL-SF version 1.3 filipino version questionnaire was utilized. A complete enumeration is employed for the respondents. Results: Results revealed that major cause of kidney disease was due to hypertension. Most of them are college graduates, with more males than females, Asian ethnicity, married, ages 39 - 48 years old, housekeepers, and with gross annual income of above P100,000. Moreover, the respondents` physical composite scores are below 43 and its mental composite scores are below 51. It is correlated with a higher risk of death based from the range defi ne by the KDQOL measure. When ABI was correlated with KDQOL results, only fi ve parameters have low correlation with the KDQOL: physical functioning, general health, problems and symptoms, effect of kidney disease and sleep domain. Conclusions: The study revealed that there is a low correlation between ABI and KDQOL. It is recommended that further study be conducted to establish more conclusive result on the role of ABIs in the quality of life among kidney patients.
