        Dynamic analysis of trusses including the effect of local modes

        The dynamic analysis of trusses using the finite element method tends to overlook the effect of local member dynamic behavior on the overall response of the complete structure. This is due to the fact that the lateral inertias of the members are omitted from the global inertia terms in the structure mass matrix. In this paper a condensed dynamic stiffness matrix is formulated and used to calculate the exact dynamic properties of trusses without the need to increase the model size. In the examples the limitations of current solutions are presented together with the exact results obtained from the proposed method.

        Machine learning for the prediction of preclinical airway management in injured patients: a registry-based trial

        Objective The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of using machine learning to establish the need for preclinical airway management for injured patients based on a standardized emergency dataset.Methods A registry-based, retrospective analysis was conducted of adult trauma patients who were treated by physician-staffed emergency medical services in southwestern Germany between 2018 and 2020. The primary outcome was to assess the feasibility of using the random forest (RF) and Naive Bayes (NB) machine learning algorithms to predict the need for preclinical airway management. The secondary outcome was to use a principal component analysis to determine the attributes that can be used and advanced for future model development.Results In total, 25,556 adults with multiple injuries were identified, including 1,451 patients (5.7%) who required airway management. Key attributes were auscultation, injury pattern, oxygen therapy, thoracic drainage, noninvasive ventilation, catecholamines, pelvic sling, colloid infusion, initial vital signs, preemergency status, and shock index. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve was between 0.96 (RF; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.96–0.97) and 0.93 (NB; 95% CI, 0.92–0.93; P<0.01). For the prediction of airway management, RF yielded a higher precision-recall area than NB (0.83 [95% CI, 0.8–0.85] vs. 0.66 [95% CI, 0.61–0.72], respectively; P<0.01).Conclusion To predict the need for preclinical airway management in injured patients, attributes that are commonly recorded in standardized datasets can be used with machine learning. In future models, the RF algorithm could be used because it has robust prediction accuracy.

        Is There a "Trial Effect" on Outcome of Patients with Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma Treated with Sunitinib?

        Purpose Studies suggested the existence of a ‘trial effect,’ in which for a given treatment, participa- tion in a clinical trial is associated with a better outcome. Sunitinib is a standard treatment for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). We aimed to study the effect of clinical trial participation on the outcome of mRCC patients treated with sunitinib, which at present, is poorly defined. Materials and Methods The records of mRCC patients treated with sunitinib between 2004-2013 in 7 centers across 2 countries were reviewed. We compared the response rate (RR), progression free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS), between clinical trial participants (n=49) and a matched cohort of non-participants (n=49) who received standard therapy. Each clinical trial participant was individually matched with a non-participant by clinicopathologic factors. PFS and OS were determined by Cox regression. Results The groups were matched by age (median, 64), sex (male, 67%), Heng risk (favorable, 25%; intermediate, 59%; poor, 16%), prior nephrectomy (92%), RCC histology (clear cell 86%), pre-treatment neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (> 3 in 55%, n=27), sunitinib induced hyper- tension (45%), and sunitinib dose reduction/treatment interruption (41%). In clinical trial participants versus non-participants, RR was partial response/stable disease 80% (n=39) versus 74% (n=36), and progressive disease 20% (n=10) versus 26% (n=13) (p=0.63; odds ratio, 1.2). The median PFS was 10 versus 11 months (hazard ratio [HR], 0.96; p=0.84), and the median OS 23 versus 24 months (HR, 0.97; p=0.89). Conclusion In mRCC patients treated with sunitinib, the outcome of clinical trial participants was similar to that of non-participants who received standard therapy.

      • Sociotechnical Network Analysis for Power Grid Resilience in South Korea

        <P>International efforts to improve power grid resilience mostly focus on technological solutions to reduce the probability of losses by designing hardened, automated, redundant, and smart systems. However, how well a system recovers from failures depends on policies and protocols for human and organizational coordination that must be considered alongside technological analyses. In this work, we develop a sociotechnical network analysis that considers technological and human systems together to support improved blackout response. We construct corresponding infrastructure and social network models for the Korean power grid and analyze them with betweenness to identify critical infrastructures and emergency management organizations. Power grid network analysis reveals important power companies and emergency management headquarters for responding to infrastructure losses, where social network analysis reveals how information-sharing and decision-making authority shifts among these organizations. We find that separate analyses provide relevant yet incomplete recommendations for improving blackout management protocols. In contrast, combined results recommend explicit ways to improve response by connecting key owner, operator, and emergency management organizations with the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy. Findings demonstrate that both technological and social analyses provide important information for power grid resilience, and their combination is necessary to avoid unintended consequences for future blackout events.</P>

        공개회사에 있어 이사회의 감독 및 정책결정기능을 의미롭게 하기 위해서는 내부통제에 대한 긍극적 책임이 이사회에게 집중되어야 한다. 이러한 책임을 이사회에 부과하는 것은 새로운 회사의 제도창출을 요하지 않는다. 다수의, 그리고 아마도 거의 대부분의 공개회사들에게 있어서 위와 같은 책임을 수행하기위해 필요한 요소들은 이미 존재하고 있다. 대신에, 주로 요구되어 지는 것은 내부통제에 대한 책임이 명백하여야 한다는 것, 이러한 책임의 의미가 구체화되어야 한다는 것, 그리고 이사회와 내부감사업무 사이에 적절한 연계가 있어야 한다는 것 등이다.

        대부분이 비집행임원으로 구성된 회사의 기관이 회사의 사업을 경영한다거나 사업정책을 결정하는 것은 거의 불가능하다. 그러나 주요한 회사의 프로젝트를 형식적으로 승인하는 역할을 하거나 비집행임원에 의한 영향력과 통제력을 행사할 수 있는 창구를 제공함으로써 회사의 주요한 상급집행임원에게 자문을 제공하는 것은 유익하다고 할 것이다. 하지만 대부분의 이러한 기능은 비교적 중요한 것이 못되며 어디에라도 쉽게 설치할 수 있는 것일 것이다. 그러나 여기에는 이러한 기관에게 가장 적합한 기능이 존재한다. 바로상급집행임원의 선임, 감독 해임이다. 따라서 회사의 경영구조를 규율하는 법규의 우선적 목적은 가능하다면 이사회를 추가적인 역할로부터 제외시키지않고 일련의 기능들이 효율적으로 완수되는 것을 보장하는 것이어야 한다. 이러한 목표를 달성시키기 위해 이러한 법규는 (1) 감독의 대상이 되는 집행임원으로부터 이사회를 독립적으로 구성시켜야 하고 (2) 이사회가 그 감독기능을 이행할 수 있도록 적절하고 객관적인 정보가 보장해야만 한다 Ⅳ장과 Ⅴ장은 이러한 요건에 대해 설명을 할 것이다.

      • Empathy-Related Responding and Its Relations to Socioemotional Development

        Empathy-related responding relates to a variety of socioemotional outcomes for children. However, for a coherent pattern to emerge, it has been important to differentiate among various empathy-related reactions, including empathy, concern, and personal distress. Sympathy, in particular, has been associated with higher levels of prosocial behavior, whereas personal distress reactions tend to be negatively or unrelated to prosocial behavior. Sympathy and empathy also have been positively related to children’s prosocial moral reasoning and socially competent behavior, and negatively related to externalizing problems. Individual differences in self-regulation, as well as socialization experiences, also have been associated with children’s sympathy vs. personal distress responses.
