Analyzing Country Images through Networks : Case of South Korea
Efe Sevin,Kadir Jun Ayhan,Diana Ingenhoff 이화여자대학교 국제통상협력연구소 2020 Asian International Studies Review Vol.21 No.2
As communication moves to social media, countries are losing control over what messages are being circulated about themselves. This article explores how South Korea’s country image is reflected within this contemporary networked communication context. We argue that country images, defined as the perceptions of countries by foreign audiences, can be swayed not only by official actors engaging in public diplomacy and nation branding projects but by any internet user who contributes to a marketplace of images. Using a social listening platform, we captured all the tweets about South Korea sent from June 01, 2019 to Jan 31, 2020. Combining textual and network analyses, our study looked at the main actors, topics, and network structures that influence South Korea’s country image on Twitter. Our findings suggest that there is no unified South Korean country image, rather diverse and relatively dispersed images. We further found that official actors had limited impact on the conversations surrounding South Korea due to their insular activities. Our methodology and findings contribute to the nascent body of empirical works in country image studies.
Direct Shear Strength of Rebar-coupler Anchor Systems for Steel-plate Composite (SC) Walls
Efe G. Kurt,Amit H. Varma,Young M. Sohn 한국강구조학회 2016 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.16 No.4
This paper focuses on the direct shear behavior of rebar-coupler anchor systems, and their use for anchorage of steel-plate composite (SC) walls to the concrete basemat of safety-related nuclear facilities. Large-scale rebar-coupler anchor specimens were tested under direct shear loading until failure. The results included the applied load-slip displacement responses of the specimens, the direct shear strength, and the observed failure mode. The American Concrete Institute (ACI) 349 code equation for calculating the direct shear strength of embedded anchors was compared with the direct shear strengths from the tests. The code equation underestimated the direct shear strength of the anchor system, because shear failure was assumed to occur in the rebars, whereas experimental observations indicated that shear fracture failure occurred in the couplers rather than the rebars. The design equation was updated to utilize the net shear area of the couplers instead of the rebars, after which the direct shear strengths from the tests could be calculated with reasonable accuracy. The experimental results were also used to propose an empirical model for the shear force vs. slip displacement response of rebar-coupler anchor systems.

Pentecostalism in Nigeria is a phenomenon that has elicited much debate. Even though its roots (in its modern expression) may be traced to the 1960s, it has become a powerful force to reckon with. Many observers, however, see its emergence on the Nigerian religious terrain as a major factor that has undermined the gospel, divesting it of its power to positively transform individuals and communities. Pentecostalism emphasizes deliverance from demonic oppression and poverty. It is a great lure in Nigeria where poverty is endemic because of self-serving governments. Pentecostal pastors urge their followers to give in order to experience material prosperity. The scriptural injunction to tithe is used as a basis for the gospel of prosperity. In a bid to promote tithing Pentecostal pastors do not see anything wrong in building their theology on the Old Testament strictures which they generally repudiate as obsolete. Despite the emphasis on prosperity the poverty level is still scandalous. Only the Pentecostal leaders seem to wallow in affluence. The gospel of material prosperity is warped because of its failure to equally emphasize soul prosperity which can only be experienced through a right relationship with God.

The measurement of viscoelastic properties of soft tissues has become a research interest with applications in the stiffness estimation of soft tissues, sorting and quality control of postharvest fruit, and fruit ripeness estimation. This paper presents a tactile sensor configuration to estimate the stiffness properties of soft tissues, using fruit as case study. Previous stiffness-measuring tactile sensor models suffer from unstable and infinite sensor outputs due to irregularities and inclination angles of soft tissue surfaces. The proposed configuration introduces two low stiffness springs at the extreme ends of the sensor with one high stiffness spring in-between. This study also presents a closed form mathematical model that considers the maximum inclination angle of the tissue’s (fruit) surface, and a finite element analysis to verify the mathematical model, which yielded stable sensor outputs. A prototype of the proposed configuration was fabricated and tested on kiwifruit samples. The experimental tests revealed that the sensor’s output remained stable, finite, and independent on both the inclination angle of the fruit surface and applied displacement of the sensor. The sensor distinguished between kiwifruit at various stiffness and ripeness levels with an output error ranging between 0.18 % and 3.50 %, and a maximum accuracy of 99.81 %, which is reasonable and competitive compared to previous design concepts.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Polysulfanes show chemopreventive effects against gastrointestinal tumors. We identified diallyl tetrasulfide and its derivative, dibenzyl tetrasulfide (DBTTS), to be mitotic inhibitors and apoptosis inducers. Here, we translate their application in colorectal cancer (CRC). MALDI-TOF-MS analysis identified both compounds as reversible tubulin binders, validated by <I>in cellulo</I> α-tubulin degradation. BRAF(V600E)-mutated HT-29 cells were resistant to DBTTS, as evidenced by mitotic arrest for 48 h prior to apoptosis induction compared to KRAS(G12V)-mutated SW480/620 cells, which committed to death earlier. The prolonged mitotic block correlated with autophagy impairment and p62 protein accumulation in HT-29 but not in SW480/620 cells, whereas siRNA-mediated p62 inhibition sensitized HT-29 cells to death. <I>In silico</I> analysis with 484 colorectal cancer patients associated higher p62 expression and reduced autophagic flux with greater overall survival. Accordingly, we hypothesized that DBTTS targets CRC survival/death through autophagy interference in cell types with differential autophagic capacities. We confirmed the therapeutic potential of DBTTS by the inhibition of spheroid and colony formation capacities in CRC cells, as well as in HT-29 zebrafish xenografts <I>in vivo</I>.</P>

Background and Objectives: The recently discovered myokine irisin has a proposed role in adipose tissue metabolism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between serum irisin level and the coronary artery severity in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD). Subjects and Methods: Sixty-three patients who underwent coronary angiography (CA) diagnosed with stable CAD and twenty-six patients with normal coronary artery (NCA) were enrolled in the study. Stable CAD patients were divided into two groups as high synergy between percutaneous coronary intervention with taxus and cardiac surgery (SYNTAX) score (≥23) and lower SYNTAX score (<23). Serum irisin level measurement was carried out using human irisin colorimetric enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) commercial kit (AG-45A-0046EK-KI01, Adipogen, San Diego, CA, USA) as recommended by the manufacturer’s protocol. Results: The patients with stable CAD with a higher SYNTAX score (score ≥23) had significantly lower serum irisin levels (127.91±55.38 ng/mL), as compared the patients with a low SYNTAX score (score <23) (224.69±92.99 ng/mL) and control group (299.54±123.20 ng/mL). Irisin levels showed significant differences between all groups (p<0.001). Conclusion: Serum irisin level is an independent predictor of coronary artery severity in patients with stable CAD.
Review on finite element analysis of dental implants
Fatma Nur Büyük(Fatma Nur Büyük ),Efe Savran(Efe Savran ),Fatih Karpat(Fatih Karpat ) 대한치과이식임플란트학회 2022 The Korean Academy of Implant Dentistry Vol.41 No.3
Dental implants are structures of high importance, as in other implant studies used in the biomedical field. The jawbone is a structure of such importance that it affects the nutritional functions of the living thing with which it is integrated. Therefore, intervention in this structure is of high importance. Parts for use in the biomedical field can be produced using numerical analysis, thus saving time and cost. In addition, the level of trust increases in the living being where the dental implant is applied. This paper reviews studies using the finite element method for the numerical analysis of dental implants. The analysis revealed important conditions, such as groove type, material, osseointegration status, splinting, dimensions, neck region, and fatigue strength of the dental implant.
