Prediction of the heat transfer performance of twisted tape inserts by using artificial neural networks

Ece Ayli,Eyup Kocak 대한기계학회 2022 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.36 No.9

A numerical study is undertaken to investigate the effect of twisted tape inserts on heat transfer. Twisted tapes with various aspect ratios and single, double, and triple inserts are placed inside a tube for Reynolds numbers ranging from 8000 to 12000. Numerical results show that the tube with a twisted tape and different numbers of tape is more effective than the smooth tube in terms of thermo-hydraulic performance. The highest heat transfer is achieved with the triple insert, with the highest turning number and an increment of 15 %. Then, an artificial neural network (ANN) model with a three-layer feedforward neural network is adopted to obtain the Nusselt number on the basis of four inputs for a heated tube with a twisted insert. Several configurations of the neural network are examined to optimize the number of neurons and to identify the most appropriate training algorithm. Finally, the best model is determined with one hidden layer and thirteen neurons in the layer. Bayesian regulation is chosen as the training algorithm. With the optimized algorithm, excellent precision for measuring the output is provided, with R2 = 0.97043. In addition, the optimized ANN architecture is applied to similar studies in the literature to predict the heat transfer performance of twisted tapes. The developed ANN architecture can predict the heat transfer enhancement performance of similar problems with R2 values higher than 0.93.

The sequential adsorption of gold, copper, silver, and palladium from pyrolysis solid product leach solution of waste PCBs

        Ece Yapıcı,Aysun Ozkan,Zerrin Gunkaya,Mufide Banar 대한환경공학회 2022 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.27 No.6

The aim of this study is the recovery of gold, copper, silver, and palladium from waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) by sequential adsorption with waste orange peel (OP)-derived bio-sorbents. First of all, adsorption tests on the gold and silver model solutions were carried out using native orange peels and modified orange peels by different methods in order to increase the adsorption capacity. These included saponification with sodium hydroxide, hydroxypropylation with propylene oxide, crosslinking with sodium trimetaphosphate and sodium tripolyphosphate, and acidification with citric acid. The optimum adsorption conditions were determined. Gold and silver adsorption was found appropriate to the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order model for isotherm and kinetic studies, respectively. After this, model solutions including gold, copper, silver, and palladium were prepared and the adsorption efficiencies were examined in the presence of different metals. Finally, waste printed circuit boards were pyrolyzed in a fixed bed stainless steel reactor to obtain an only-metal-containing solid product. Next, leaching of metals from the solid product was performed. For the last stage, adsorption studies on the leach solution were carried out under optimum conditions. As a result, 67.07% gold, 85.77% copper, 97.05% silver, and 75% palladium were adsorbed in total.

Evaluation of Changes in Peripheric Biomarkers Related to Blood Brain Barrier Damage in Patients with Schizophrenia and Their Correlation with Symptoms

        Ece Yazla,Huseyin Kayadibi,Ihsan Cetin,Unsal Aydinoglu,Mehmet Emrah Karadere 대한정신약물학회 2022 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.20 No.3

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the levels of peripheric biomarkers that have been associated with blood brain barrier (BBB) damage in healthy controls and two groups of patients with schizophrenia, those who received typical-atypical antipsychotics and those who received only atypical antipsychotics. Additionally, we sought relationships between these biomarkers and schizophrenia symptoms. Methods: This study was conducted with the inclusion of 41 healthy volunteers and 75 patients with schizophrenia. The biomarkers measured to evaluate BBB injury were as follows: spectrin breakdown product 145 (SBDP145), spectrin breakdown product 150 (SBDP150), ubiquitin carboxy terminal hydrolase L1 (UCHL1), ubiquitin ligase cullin-3 (cullin), occludin and claudin, which were measured via ELISA. Symptoms of patients with schizophrenia were evaluated with the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms (SAPS), Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms, the Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI), and the general assessment of functionality (GAF). Results: Compared to controls, SBDP145 (p = 0.022) and cullin (p = 0.046) levels were significantly higher in patients with schizophrenia receiving atypical antipsychotic treatment. SBDP150 levels were lower in the combination treatment group compared to the control group (p = 0.022). Claudin (p = 0.804), occludin (p = 0.058) and UCHL1 (p = 0.715) levels were similar among groups. In recipients of combination treatment, SBDP145 levels were found to be positively correlated with SAPS-total (r = 0.440, p = 0.036) and SAPS-delusions (r = 0.494, p = 0.017) scores. Conclusion: The relationships demonstrated in this study indicate that more comprehensive research is needed to understand whether BBB defects contribute to clinical characteristics in patients with schizophrenia.

      • Poster Session:PS 0257 ; Gastroenterology : Gastric Xanthelasma an Incidental and Benign Lesion of Stomach: A Case Presentation

( Ece Yigit Taskin ),( Sibel Serin ),( Kevser Kutlu Tatar ),( Sema Basat ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Background: Gastric Xanthalesmas are rare benign incidental yellow-white lesions between 0.5-10 mm in size. They are detected more frequently in female patients and the frequency of these lesions increases with age. Although the etiology of these lesions are unclear, chronic gastritis, gastrointestinal anastomosis, intestinal metaplasia, and H. pylori infection are found to be associated with GI xanthalesmas. They are usually located in antrum of the stomach in gastrointestinal tract, especially along the lesser curvature. In contrast to cutaneous xanthalesmas there is no evident association between GI xanthalesmas and hyperlipidemia. Methods: Here we present endoscopic and histological features of gastric xanthalesma in a 65 year old man with a history of chronic gastritis and iron defi ciency anemia. Results: Patient presented with iron defi ciency anemia. Upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy has been done for investigation of the etiology. Colonoscopy showed diverticular disease of the colon. Upper GI endoscopy of the patient showed a 4mm foamy yellowish lipamatous lesion at the lesser curvature of the stomach (Image). Multiple biopsies are obtained from the lesion. The histology showed large foamy histiocytes containing a mixture of lipids in the mucosa and the submucosa. The multiple biopsies obtained from the antrum showed intestinal metaplasia and chronic gastritis with H.plylori positivity. Conclusion: Gastric xanthalesmas are asymptomatic benign and incidental endoscopic fi ndings. Even though they can be found in every part of Gastrointestinal tract from esophagus to colon, they are frequently observed in stomach. They are usually associated with chronic gastritis, Helicobacter pylori infection and intestinal metaplasia. Although the clinical signifi cance is unclear, gastric xanthalesmas are important lesions and biopsies should always be performed because they are frequently confused with malignant lesions.

Ece, Harman,Cigdem, Erten,Yuksel, Kucukzeybek,Ahmet, Dirican,Hakan, Er,Oktay, Tarhan Mustafa Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.10

Objective: The aim was to investigate indicators related to DNA damage and cancer pathogenesis in Type II diabetes cases with breast cancer. It was planned to evaluate the relationship between these markers with oral antidiabetic drugs. Research Design and Methods: Fourty patients and 10 healthy individuals were included in the study. HIF-$1{\alpha}$ and 8-OHdG are examined in blood samples taken from these individuals with an ELISA Kit. Statistical analysis of data was performed with 95% confidence using Windows package program SPSS 15.0. Results: HIF-$1{\alpha}$ parameters were found to be meaningfully higher in the patient group than the controls in both pretreatment and posttreatment periods (p<0.05). No significant differences in terms of 8-OHdG between patients and controls. However, posttreatment serum HIF-$1{\alpha}$ ve 8-OHdG levels was found lower than pretreatment levels in patients receiving metformin, but not with pioglitazone. Conversely, serum 8-OHdG levels decreased significantly in these patients. When patients were evaluated according to the treatment groups (pioglitazone vs. metfformin) no significant differences in terms of serum HIF-$1{\alpha}$ and 8-OHdG levels between treatment groups. Conclusions: HIF-$1{\alpha}$ levels decreased significantly in the patient group receiving metformin. However, there was no significant difference in terms of HIF-$1{\alpha}$ levels in the patients receiving pioglitazone.

Supervised learning method for prediction of heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids

Ece Aylı,Eyup Kocak 대한기계학회 2023 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.37 No.5

This study focuses on the alication and investigation of the predictive ability of artificial intelligence in the numerical modelling of nanofluid flows. Numerical and experimental methods are powerful tools from an accuracy point of view, but they are also time- and costconsuming methods. Therefore, using soft-computing techniques can improve such CFD drawbacks by patterning the CFD data. After obtaining the aropriate ANN and ANFIS architecture using the CFD data, many new data can be created without requiring numerical and experimental methods. In the scope of this research, the FCM-ANFIS and ANN methods are used to predict the thermal behaviour of the turbulent flow in a heated pipe with several nanoparticles. A parametric CFD study is carried out for water-TiO 2 , water-CuO, and waterSiO 2 nanofluid through a pipe. The Reynolds number is varied between 7000 and 15000, and the nanofluid concentration is varied between 0.25 % and 4 %. The effects of using nanofluid on local values of Nusselt number and shear stress distribution were investigated. Numerical results indicate that with the increasing nanoparticle volume fraction of nanofluid, the average Nusselt number increases, but the required pumping power also increases. The obtained soft computing results demonstrate that the FCM clustering ANFIS has given better results both in training and testing when it is compared to the ANN architecture with an R 2 of 0.9983. Regarding this, the FCM-ANFIS is an excellent candidate for calculating the Nusselt number in heat transfer problems.
