While numerous studies have characterized the distribution and/or ecology of various pathogenic Vibrio spp., here we have simultaneously examined several estuarine sites for Vibrio vulnificus, V. cholerae, and V. parahaemolyticus. For a one year period, waters and sediment were monitored for the presence of these three pathogens at six different sites on the east coast of North Carolina in the United States. All three pathogens, identified using colony hybridization and PCR methods, occurred in these estuarine environments, although V. cholerae occurred only infrequently and at very low levels. Seventeen chemical, physical, and biological parameters were investigated, including salinity, water temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, levels of various inorganic nutrients and dissolved organic carbon, as well as total vibrios, total coliforms, and E. coli. We found each of the Vibrio spp. in water and sediment to correlate to several of these environmental measurements, with water temperature and total Vibrio levels correlating highly (P<0.0001) with occurrence of the three pathogens. Thus, these two parameters may represent simple assays for characterizing the potential public health hazard of estuarine waters.

The syntheses and characterization of three noncentrosymmetric main chain hydrogen bonded macromoleculeswhich incorporate diethyl-[4-(pyridin-4-ylazo)-phenyl]-amine hydrogen bond acceptor units are reported. These macromolecules participate in strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding as demonstrated using attenuated totalreflectance (ATR) FTIR. The phase transitions of these macromolecules depend on the identity of the hydrogen bonddonor. Mixtures of these azo-stilbazole macromolecules with noncentrosymmetric hydrogen bonded liquid crystallinemacromolecules possess nematic liquid crystalline phases when the concentration of the azo-stilbazole macromoleculeis ≤ 50 mol%.

The syntheses and characterization of a series of noncentrosymmetric main chain hydrogen bonded macromoleculesare described, which contain 4-pyridone hydrogen bond acceptor units. These macromolecules possessstrong intermolecular hydrogen bonding as demonstrated using attenuated total reflectance (ATR) FTIR. The phasetransitions of the macromolecules depend on the identities of the hydrogen bond donor, lateral substituent, and linkerchain.

An association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D; vitamin D) deficiency and increased cardiovascular (CV) risk factors and CV disease (CVD) has been shown in general population studies. Vitamin D deficiency has been noted in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and CVD is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in SLE. The objectives of this study were to estimate the associations of 25(OH)D levels with CV risk factors and to determine whether low baseline 25(OH)D levels predict future CV events in patients participating in an international inception cohort.

The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of acculturation level and individualism/collectivism on shopping behaviors such as' informational influences, shopping orientations, and store patronage of Asian ethnic groups residing in the United States. A total of 129 Asian adults residing in North Carolina State of the U.S. completed questionnaires. Results showed statistically significant differences in responses to an informational influence (i.e., media source) and two shopping orientation subscales (i.e., shopping confusion in the Us. and personalized shopping) between low- and high-acculturated groups. A significant difference was found between the individualistic group and the collectivistic group on three shopping orientation subscales. Due to the potential importance of considering both acculturation and individualism/collectivism when looking at shopping behaviors, four groups were created by categorizing respondents on the basis of their acculturation level and individualism/collectivism scores. Comparison on shopping orientations and informational influences by four groups revealed statistically significant differences in response to two shopping orientation subscales and two patronage behavior subscales.
