This paper discusses the design, implementation, and potential use of an ontology‐based mobile pediatric consultation and monitoring system, which is a smart healthcare expert system for pediatric patients. The proposed system provides remote consultation and monitoring of pediatric patients during their illness at places distant from medical service areas. The system not only shares instant medical data with a pediatrician but also examines the data as a smart medical assistant to detect any emergency situation. In addition, it uses an inference engine to infer instant suggestions for performing certain initial medical treatment steps when necessary. The applied methodologies and main technical contributions have three aspects: (a) pediatric consultation and monitoring ontology, (b) semantic Web rule knowledge base, and (c) inference engine. Two case studies with real pediatric patients are provided and discussed. The reported results of the applied case studies are promising, and they demonstrate the applicability, effectiveness, and efficiency of the proposed approach.
Protein substitutions as new-generation pharmanutrition approach to managing phenylketonuria
Duygu Ağagündüz,Fatma Nur Keskin,Teslime Özge Şahin,Raffaele Capasso 대한소아청소년과학회 2023 Clinical and Experimental Pediatrics (CEP) Vol.66 No.8
Phenylketonuria (PKU), an autosomal recessive inherited metabolic disorder, is caused by a mutation in the phenylalaninehydroxylase (PAH) gene on the 12th chromosome. DefectivePAH activity ultimately leads to increased phenylalanine (Phe)blood concentrations (hyperphenylalaninemia) that harm thebrain. The primary purpose of PKU treatment is to maintainthe blood Phe level to prevent certain undesired effects. Hence, lifelong medical nutrition therapy is recommendedfor these patients. The usefulness of natural protein sourcesmay be limited, as they are based on individual Phe tolerance, and a patient’s daily protein requirements are supported byPhe-free amino acid mixtures. A few PKU treatment centersrecently started using supplemental casein glycomacropeptide, pegvaliase, or large neutral amino acids, and some patients aretreated by responding to tetrahydrobiopterin, which works asa pharmaceutical chaperone (prescribed as sapropterin dihydrochloride). This review discusses the efficacy and safetyconsiderations of basic medical nutrition approaches and newgeneration protein substitutes that are used to treat PKU.
Free vibrations of fluid conveying microbeams under non-ideal boundary conditions
Duygu Atcı,Süleyman Murat Bağdatlı 국제구조공학회 2017 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.24 No.2
In this study, vibration analysis of fluid conveying microbeams under non-ideal boundary conditions (BCs) is performed. The objective of the present paper is to describe the effects of non-ideal BCs on linear vibrations of fluid conveying microbeams. Non-ideal BCs are modeled as a linear combination of ideal clamped and ideal simply supported boundary conditions by using the weighting factor (<i>k</i>). Non-ideal clamped and non-ideal simply supported beams are both considered to show the effects of BCs. Equations of motion of the beam under the effect of moving fluid are obtained by using Hamilton principle. Method of multiple scales which is one of the perturbation techniques is applied to the governing linear equation of motion. Approximate solutions of the linear equation are obtained and the effects of system parameters and non-ideal BCs on natural frequencies are presented. Results indicate that, natural frequencies of fluid conveying microbeam changed significantly by varying the weighting factor <i>k</i>. This change is more remarkable for clamped microbeams rather than simply supported ones.
Microwave drying and moisture diffusivity of white mulberry: experimental and mathematical modeling
Duygu Evin 대한기계학회 2011 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.25 No.10
The literature surveyed revealed that drying kinetics of white mulberry under microwave treatment has not been investigated. In present study, both experimental study and mathematical modeling on microwave drying of white mulberry was performed. The microwave drying process which reduced the moisture content of mulberry from 3.76 to 0.25 (g water/g dry matter) was carried out at 90, 180, 360,600, and 800 W in a modified microwave drying set-up. The effects of microwave drying technique on the moisture ratio and drying rate of white mulberry were investigated experimentally. Both the effects of microwave power level (under the range of 90-800W) and initial sample weight (50-150g) were studied. No constant rate period was observed. Mathematical modeling of thin layer drying kinetics of white mulberry under microwave treatment was also investigated by fitting the experimental drying data to eight thin layer drying models. Among the models proposed, Midilli et al. model precisely represented the microwave drying behavior of white mulberry with the coefficient of determination higher than 0.999 and mean square of deviation (χ2) and root mean square error (RMSE) lower than 1.1x10-⁴ and 8.9x10-³, respectively for all the microwave drying conditions studied. The effective moisture diffusivity (D_eff ) of white mulberry varied from 0.45 x10_-8 to 3.25x10-8 m²s-¹. Both the drying constant (k) and D_eff increased with the increase of microwave power level.

Hydrogen is getting increasing attention as a medium for energy storage, and sodium borohydride is accepted as a suitable carrier for hydrogen. The main product of the process by means of which hydrogen is produced from sodium borohydride is sodium metaborate. Our aim was to find an alternative use for sodium metaborate and specifically investigating the feasibility to use it for carbon dioxide capture from flue gases. The products of this chemical absorption are sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and boric acid, all of which are industrially important chemicals. A bubble column was used in the experiments. Oxygen desorption technique was employed to determine the liquid side physical mass transfer coefficient. Chemical mass transfer coefficient was determined by absorption of carbon dioxide from its mixture with nitrogen into sodium metaborate solution. Enhancement factor was then calculated and a correlation was developed for it.

Background: Obesity is the main cause of type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, musculoskeletal disorders, some cancers, and mental disorders, and many other diseases leading to mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of participation in an obesity center on patient mental status and blood parameters within 3 months and to show the relationship of this participation with depression, anxiety, and other parameters. Methods: This was a descriptive and cross-sectional study. Of 2,591 patients admitted to an obesity center between November 1, 2018 and November 1, 2019, 317 met the inclusion criteria. This study was a descriptive and cross-sectional study of the data from those 317 patients. Results: Of the patients enrolled in the study, 90.5% were female and 9.5% were male. Weight, occupation, body mass index, body fat percentage, waist circumference, hip circumference, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), Beck Depression Scale, and Beck Anxiety Scale were important determinants in our univariate analyses associated with the regular receipt of center education. HbA1c (odds ratio, 1.661; 95% confidence interval, 1.140–2.421; P=0.008) was shown to be multivariate predictors of amount of participation in center education. Conclusion: These results support that regular participation in obesity center education has a positive effect on patients mental status, blood parameters, and anthropometric measurements. Thus, increasing the number of obesity centers is of great importance in treating obesity and improving obese patient mental status.

Conductive poly(2-ethyl aniline) (PEAn)/kaolinite composite was prepared by chemical polymerization in aqueous HCl medium in the presence of kaolinite particles by using potassium chromate (K2CrO4) as oxidant. Effects of polymerization conditions, such as concentrations of oxidant and 2-ethyl aniline, polymerization time and temperature on PEAn content and conductivity of composite, were investigated. The prepared composite material, having the highest PEAn content and conductivity, was obtained in the polymerization carried out at 20 ℃ for 2 h with 0.2 M K2CrO4 and 0.2 M EAn. It was observed that the micro-hardness of prepared composites increased with the increase in the PEAn contents of composites. The highest micro-hardness value of 7.92 kg mm-2 was reached at 24.6% PEAn content. Characterization of composites was carried out by FTIR spectroscopy, XRD, TGA and SEM techniques.

Objectives. The purpose of this study is to investigate if any change exists in the values of tracheal bifurcation angles (subcarinal angle [SCA] and interbronchial angle [IBA]), right and left bronchial angles (RBA and LBA) in different pediatric age groups. Methods. Chest computed tomography (CT) images of children aged 18 years and younger were reviewed retrospectively by two radiologists who were blinded to each other’s measurements. One hundred and eighteen children were involved. RBA, LBA, SCA, and IBA were measured on coronal reformatted images. Subjects were classified into three groups according to their age. Measurement of IBA was done by measuring the angle between the lines drawn along the central axis of right and left main bronchi over their length. RBA and LBA were measured at the intersection points of the lines drawn along the inferior borders of the right and left main bronchi and the line passing through the longitudinal axis of trachea. Sums of RBA and LBA gave SCA. Interobserver agreement was also analyzed. Results. SCA, IBA, and RBA values were statistically significant between children of ages less than 10 years and over 10 years (P<0.01). Interobserver agreement was excellent with an intraclass correlation coefficient score of 0.87 (95% confidence interval) for RBA, SCA, and IBA measurements. Conclusion. We concluded that tracheal bifurcation angles are wider in children of age 10 years and younger. As age increases values of SCA, IBA, and RBA decrease.

Objective: The primary objective of the present study was to further elucidate the effects of oxcarbazepine (OXC) and levetiracetam (LEV) monotherapies on the bone health status of patients with epilepsy. Methods: This study included 48 patients who attended our epilepsy outpatient clinic, had a diagnosis of epilepsy, and were undergoing either OXC or LEV monotherapy and 42 healthy control subjects. The demographic and clinical features of the patients, including gender, age, onset of disease, daily drug dosage, and duration of disease, were noted. Additionally, the calcium, ionized calcium, and 25-OH vitamin-D3 levels of the participants were prospectively evaluated. Results: The 25-OH vitamin-D3, calcium, and ionized calcium levels of the patients taking OXC were significantly lower than those of the control group. These levels did not significantly differ between the patients taking LEV and the control group, but there was a significant negative relationship between daily drug dose and ionized calcium levels in the LEV patients. Conclusion: In the present study, anti-epileptic drugs altered the calcium, ionized calcium, and 25-OH vitamin-D3 levels of epilepsy patients and resulted in bone loss, abnormal mineralization, and fractures. These findings suggest that the calcium, ionized calcium, and 25-OH vitamin-D3 levels of patients with epilepsy should be regularly assessed.

Exopolysaccharide producing starter cultures enable manufacturing ‘‘clean labeled’’ foods with improved textural and nutritional properties. The structural and technological analyses were performed on the ropy exopolysaccharides of six Lactobacillus plantarum. The incubation temperature, time and pH affected the exopolysaccharide production and high exopolysaccharide was produced in the presence of sucrose and maltose. The viscosity of exopolysaccharide was high at acidic conditions except PFC311E that showed viscous at neutral pH. Lactobacillus plantarum strains produced between 120 and 400 mg/L exopolysaccharide in which the highest was observed at L. plantarum PFC311. Exoploysaccharides were degraded over 300 』C except PFC311E that degraded at 295.7 』C. The NMR analyses revealed that the exopolysaccharides were synthesized by a1-6, a1-3 and a1-4 bonds with glucose, galactose and fructose moieties. In conclusion, L. plantarum PFC311 produced ropy exopolysaccharide with different structural, rheological and thermal properties and reveals potential to be used in food industry.
