      • Cytotoxic and antioxidant properties of four plants belonging to the genus Solanum

        The aim of the study was to evaluate in vitro antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of the methanolic extracts of leaves of Solanum sisymbrifolium, Solanum anguivi multiflora, Solanum barbisetum and Solanum jasminoides. In the in vitro antioxidant screening using ABTS [2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt] method, the methanol extracts of Solanum jasminoides, Solanum barbisetum and Solanum anguivi multiflora exhibited potent antioxidant activity with $IC_{50}$ values 31.25 $\pm$ 0.35, 40.33 $\pm$ 0.57 and 54.33 $\pm$ 0.57 ${\mu}g$/ml, respectively. Solanum barbisetum also showed potent activity in DPPH [1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl] method with an $IC_{50}$ value of 55.33 $\pm$ 1.66 ${\mu}g/ml. In the cytotoxicity studies, the methanol extract of Solanum barbisetum exhibited moderate activity against Vero, HEp-2, HeLa and A-549 cell lines with $IC_{50}$ values in the range of 83.30 - 127.30 ${\mu}g$/ml. Solanum anguivi multiflora extract also showed moderate activity against Hep-2 cell line with $IC_{50}$ value of 80.13 ${\mu}g$/ml. Solanum barbisetum possessing both the activities requires further investigation.

        예비유아교사의 디지털 리터러시와 테크놀로지 자아효능감과, 메타인지 전략, 그릿 간의 관계 분석

        본 연구는 미래사회 변화에 대응하는 유아교사의 핵심역량으로 거론되는 디지털 역량과 관련하여 예비유아교사의 디지털 리터러시와 테크놀로지 자아효능감, 메타인지 전략, 그릿 간의 관계를 통합적으로 규명하고자 하는 목적으로 수행되었다. 이를 위해 광주광역시 소재 S대학의 유아교육 전공 1~4학년 학생 150명으로 대상으로 테크놀로지 자아효능감, 메타인지 전략, 그릿과 디지털 리터러시를 측정하여 구조모형 분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 테크놀로지 자아효능감, 메타인지 전략, 그릿과 디지털 리터러시 간의 인과관계를 설정한 모형은 타당한 것으로 확인되었다. 둘째, 테크놀로지 자아효능감과 메타인지 전략은 디지털 리터러시에 정적인 영향을, 그릿은 메타인지 전략에 부적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 테크놀로지 자아효능감은 디지털 리터러시에 직접효과, 메타인지 전략을 매개로 간접효과가 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 마지막으로 연구 결과를 바탕으로 예비유아교사의 디지털 역량 신장을 위한 교육적 시사점을 제시하였다. This study conducted with the purpose of identifying the integrated relationships between digital literacy, technology self-efficacy, metacognitive strategy and grit of pre-service early childhood teachers’ in relation to digital competencies, which are mentioned as the core competencies of early childhood teachers to respond to future social change. To this end, a structural equation modeling was conducted by measuring digital literacy, technology self-efficacy, metacognitive strategy and grit among 150 first- to fourth-year early childhood education students at S University in Gwangju. The results of structural model analysis are as follows. First, the results showed that the equation model of causal relationships between digital literacy, technology self-efficacy, metacognitive strategy and grit of pre-service early childhood teachers’ was valid. Second, technology self-efficacy and metacognitive strategy were found to have a positive effect on digital literacy, and grit was found to have a negative effect on digital literacy. Third, it was confirmed that technology self-efficacy had a direct effects on digital literacy and an indirect effect mediated metacognitive strategy. Through this, educational implications for improving pre-service early childhood teachers’ digital literacy were discussed.

        Analytical Modelling of Temperature in Cylindrical Grinding to Predict Grinding Burns

        The direct measurement of grinding temperature is always difficult due to coolant cover and very size of work and wheel interaction zone. At the same time, high heat generation in grinding often leads to grinding burns thereby affecting surface integrity; in this context, theoretical evaluation of temperature could facilitate early detection of the grinding burns. This paper therefore presents an analytical model to evaluate grinding temperature and correlates it with the occurrence of grinding burns in terms of BNA. In general, the analytical approach involves evaluating real contact length, grinding forces and finally grinding zone temperature for the plunge cylindrical grinding. The maximum rise in grinding temperature at the surface was calculated, for the wet grinding process by considering the total heat flux entering into the grinding system. Model validation experiments have been performed to measure BNA and identify parametric conditions that produce grinding burns. The model estimate of grinding zone temperature of 631 °C is in good agreement (92%) with other research works. Further, when the calculated grinding temperature reaches beyond 631 °C, the grinding burns are observed on the work surface with a BNA value of the order of 100 mp for the micro alloyed steel. The minimum thermal damage in terms of BNA is observed at higher levels of wheel speed and spark-out time and lower levels of depth of cut.

      • In vitro antioxidant activity of various extracts of Aristolochia bracteolata leaves

        Aristolochia bracteolata is being used in traditional medicine for a variety of ailments. Three successive and two crude extracts of its leaves were subjected for in vitro antioxidant activity using seven different methods. The successive ethyl acetate and crude methanol extracts have shown potent antioxidant activity in ABTS method with $IC_{50}$ values of $17.08\;{\pm}\;0.44\;and\;28.12\;{\pm}\;2.87\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The crude methanol and successive chloroform extracts have shown moderate antioxidant activity in scavenging of hydroxyl radical by p-NDA method. All the extracts have shown moderate to low antioxidant activity by other methods.

        Early initiation of breastfeeding and factors associated with its delay among mothers at discharge from a single hospital

        Background: According to the National Family Health Survey– 4, in India, 78.9% of deliveries occur in institutions, although only 42.6% of new mothers initiate breastfeeding within 1 hour of delivery.Purpose: To estimate the proportion of early initiation of breastfeeding (EIBF) among new mothers at discharge from a tertiary care hospital and identify the determinants of delayed initiation of breastfeeding among them.Methods: This was a hospital-based analytical cross-sectional study of 108 new mothers. After obtaining Institutional Review Board approval and informed consent, we interviewed the new mothers on the day of discharge. Multivariate logistic regression was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 24.Results: The median breastfeeding initiation time was 90 minutes (interquartile range, 30–180 minutes). Overall, 43.5% of the mothers practiced EIBF, 77.4% practiced exclusive breastfeeding, and 43.5% were rooming in at discharge. Reasons for breastfeeding delays included extended recovery time from spinal anesthesia, maternal lassitude, and uncomfortable breastfeeding position due to post-cesarean pain. In the multivariate analysis, a birth weight less than 2,500 g (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 4.33; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12–16.82; P=0.03), cesarean section delivery (aOR, 4.68; 95% CI, 1.57– 13.92; P=0.005), and mother’s poor knowledge of breastfeeding (aOR, 4.61; 95% CI, 1.44–14.72; P=0.010) were more likely to delay the initiation of breastfeeding.Conclusion: EIBF was practiced by less than half of the new mothers as determined by the cesarean section, baby’s birth weight, and mothers’ awareness of breastfeeding. Thus, it is vital to improve breastfeeding and nutritional counseling among mothers during the antenatal period and improve healthcare professionals’ training to facilitate EIBF, even in circumstances such as cesarean section.
