        Computerization of spirometric measurements and prediction of the normal values have led to prove whether the prediction formulas programed in the computer would be applicable to the Koreans. In this context, 23 male and 32 female college students who were not smoking were subjected who were not smoking were subjected to measure 13 parameters of pulmonary ventilation, and the prediction formulas for these parameters on age and physical characteristics-height, weight and body surface area were derived. Comparing the predicted values with the measured values and with those derived by other domestic and foreign researchers, the following results were obtained. 1. Means and standard deviations of ventilatory volumes, forced expiratory flow rates, and rations of timed forced expiratory volume to forced vital capacity were shown in Table 1. Variability of ventilatory volumes was a little bit smaller in males than in females, showing coefficient of variation ranging 11.7∼15.7% for the former and 13.4∼16.6% for the latter, Coeffeicients of variation of forced expiratory flow rates ranged 17.2∼26.1% in males and 15.9∼25.5% in females, indicating larger variability than that of ventilatory volumes in both sexes. 2. All the physical measurements-height, weight and body surface area showed significant correlations with ventilatory volumes, but not with forced expiratory flow rates and with ratios of timed forced expiratory volume to forced vital capacity. Age, though it was very limited in range in both sexes, showed significant correlation only with forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume in 3 seconds in females, but not with all others(Table 2). 3. Simple and multiple linear regression equations predicting various parameters of pulmonary ventilation with physical measurements and age with which pulmonary ventilatory parameters showed significant correlations have been derived and shown in Table 3. It was proved that these prediction equations were very valid, because all the predicted values were well coincided with the respective mesured values. 4. Prediction equations obtained in this study were compared with those reported by other domestic and foreign researchers(Table 4). Those derived by domestic researchers were proved to be valid when applied to the measured values in this study. On the other hand, some of those derived by foreign researchers appeared not valid for the Korea college students; even the prediction equations that were valid were considered necessary to add a constant to add a constant(correction factor), difference between the predicted and the measured means, to make them agree for practical purposes.

        In summarizing the results obtained from the experiment on ??-ALAD activity by adding 6 kinds of heavy metals and EDTA, a chelating agent, at different concentrations ranging from 1.5×10^-7 M to 1×10^-2 M in vitro to hepatic ??-ALAD partially purified from ICR strain of mice, the following conclusions can be drawn. Zn^++, a constitutive element of the enzyme, behaves as an activator at low concentration below 6×10^-5 M, and as an inhibitor at higher concentration above 1.5×10^4 M. The same effect is noted with Al^+++ and Hg^++, although inhibitory action of these two metals appears at higher concentration than Zn^++. Both Pb^++ and Cu^++ are the potent inhibitor of the enzyme, and the Cu^++' acts as more potent inhibitor than Pb^++, EDTA, a chelating agent, also acts as a powerful inhibitor of the enzyme. It can be concluded from the above results that the ??-ALAD activity is found to be an indicator of the total metal ion concentration in the blood, and therefore, is considered to be of doubtful value as a biological index of lead exposure for screening large population of lead workers.

      • 80세 이상 노인 환자에서 시행한 슬관절 전치환술

        Purpose : The purpose of this study is whether total knee arthroplasty would be an effective procedure in the group over than eighty year-old patients. Materials and Methods : Between 1990 and 2001, 54 cases of the patients who are older than 80 year-old(group A) and 456 cases of the patients who are less than 80 year-old(group B) were treated by total knee arthroplasties and we evaluated the patients by Knee Score of American Knee Society and daily activity. Results : Pain was markedly improved in group A, and 30 of the patients(79%) participate the recreational activities, 32 patients(84%) could shop gloceries after surgery, and only 5 patients(13%) living in the house are neccessary for their family members. The mean knee score was 92 points and 91 points, pain score was 43 points in group A and 39 points in group B, and function score was 61 points in group A and 68 point in group B. Conclusion : Total knee arthroplasty still is a valuable procedure even for this elderly group, and most of these patients returned to a more functional lifestyle.

      • 벼의 常溫通風乾燥시스템의 適正作業條件에 관한 硏究

        To determine the design parameters for natural air drying system, that is, minimum airflow requirements, optimum bed depth, and fan operation method the drying characteristics for rough rice were analyzed by simulation method based on 9-year weather data for Chuncheon area. The results can be summarized as follows : 1. Equations for estimating drying time and drymatter loss were derived in the form of exponetial function, which are expressed in terms of airflow rate, initia moisture content and temperature rise due to supplemental heat. 2. Minimum airflow rates for safe drying were determined for different fan operation, initial moisture content and temperature rise. 3. Maximum depths for various size of grain bins and initial moisture content were determined for the fan power(0.5-1.5KW) available on farms. 4. Continuous fan operation appeared to be more effective than intermittent operation considering fan power and energy requirements. Additional heating resulted in an increase of energy requirement. 5. It appeared to be more effective to operate fan continuously until the top layer was dried to 16 percent wet basis, thereafter intermittently considering overdrying, quality loss, fan power and energy requirements.

      • Alumina 첨가에 따르는 Hydroxyapatite의 기계적 성질

        For the purpose of improving mechanical strength of hydroxyaptite, various amount of alumina powder were added to hydroxyaptite which were prepared by precipitation method using Ca(NO₃)₂4H₂O and (NH₄)₂HPO₄under the Ca/P mole ratio 1.67 and pH 11. Hydroxyaptite-alumina powder composite were sintered in H₂O gas atmosphere at 1150-1400℃. Adding alumina, hydroxyaptite was decomposed to β-tricalcium phosphate and co-existed with hydroxyaptite. In case of added alumina, bending strength was higher than that of hydroxyaptite. Maximum bending strength was 161MPa at 1300℃, 5.0wt% alumina. Added alumina restrained grain growth of the hydroxyaptite.

      • PCR에 의한 유전자 변형 대두의 검출

        Due to rapid introduction of distribution of GMO(Genetically Modified Organism) in the market, Korea food industry came face to face with the question of the use and labelling requirements on GMO crops and its derivatives. As a consequence of this Situation, accurate and valid methodologies for detection of GMOs in foodstuffs are required. The polymerase chain reaction is a highly specific and sensitive method for the detection of nucleic acids. In this study, we performed PCR by using two kinds of primer pairs in soybeans and tofus obtaind from domestic markets. In case of using the primer, CaM 35t promotor, amplified DNA products were shown in four samples of 10 soybean samples. But two samples had amplified products in case of using NoS3' terminator primer. Both method did not showed amplified DNA in three tofu samples.

      • Diatomaceous earth를 이용한 경제적이고 효율높은 homemade PCR purification column의 제조 및 평가

        In recent years the amount of sequencing has increased tremendously, especially due to the introduction of automated DNA sequencing. PCR is principal method for the synthesis of templates for DNA sequencing. Consequently, the need for PCR cleanup for template preparation has increased. Already, many PCR purification kits are marketed. This DNA purification kits uses most glass membrane or silica gel, So, can do rapidly efficient purification by simple miniprep. But, efficiency of purification kits is different according to manufacturer and is very expensive. Therefore, we compare the homemade Diatomaceous earth column with major manufacturer's spin column methods for DNA purification. As a result, we found that the homemade Diatomaceous earth column method resulted in equal or better yields relative to the commercial purification kits.

      • 고령의 불안정성 대퇴 전자간 골절시 대퇴거 대치형 주대를 이용한 양극성 고관절 반치환술

        목 적 : 고령의 대퇴골 전자간 불안정성 분쇄골절시 대퇴거 대치형 주대를 사용하여 인공관절 치환술을 시행한 후 수술 시간, 보행 시기, 및 그 기능적 결과와 합병증을 분석하고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법 : 1991년 8월부터 2001년 1월까지 본원에서 대퇴 전자간 불안정성 분쇄골절로 수술받은 75세 이상 환자중 대퇴거 대치형 주대를 이용한 양극성 고관절 반치환술을 시행받은 후 2년 이상 추시가 가능하였던 환자 20례를 대상으로 하였다. 결 과 : 수술 시간은 평균 45분이었고, 임상적 결과 분석에서 Harris Hip Score는 평균 84.7점이었다. 사각보행의 시기는 평균 8일이었으며, 전체중 부하는 평균 6.9주였다. 합병증으로 수술부위 감염 2례, 고도의 대퇴부 동통 1례 및 탈구 1례가 발생하였다. 결 론 : 고령의 환자에서 발생한 대퇴 전자간 불안정성 분쇄 골절의 치료에 있어서 대퇴거 대치형 주대를 이용한 양극성 고관절 반치환술은 비교적 조기 체중부하와 기능적 회복이 가능하고 낮은 합병증으로 좋은 치료법의 하나로 사료된다. Purpose : The purpose of this paper is to analyze the operating time, timing of ambulation, functional results and complications using the calcar replacement stem for the severely comminuted unstable intertrochanteric fractures in the eldertly patients. Materials and Methods : From August 1991 through January 2001, 20 elderly patients over the 75 year old patients had undergone bipolar hemiarthroplasty with calcar replacement stem for the treatment of unstable intertrichanteric fractures. Results : The mean operating time was 45 minutes and mean Harris Hip Score was 84.7. Ambulation with walker was started at post-operative 8 days and full weight bearing was 6.9 weeks, each. Complications were 2 cases of wound infection, 1 case of severe thigh pain and 1 case of dislocation. Conclusion : Early ambulation, functional restoration and decrease of the complications with bipolar hemiarthroplasty using calcar replacement stem for severely comminuted unstable intertrochanteric fractures in elderly patients, therefore this methods seems to be one of the effective treatments.
