        Self-representation of identity : A Case of a Korean Family

This paper aims to research ethnic identity of a Korean-American family using MCA (membership categorization analysis) of Sacks (1992) in their discursive conversations. The participants signal their ethnic identities by categorizing addressee, themselves and third person referents. A positioning process is involved in the categorization with various discursive identities (Goffman, 1981), such as speaker, hearer and third person referent and also with a variety of social identities, such as a woman, mother, and Korean or American. Sacks (1972, 1979, 1992) divided the MCA into two in that identities are established in part through MCD (membership categorization devices) that serve to characterize a participant as a member of a certain social group, and through CBA (category-bound activities), which categorize participants indirectly by indexing typical activities bound to categorizations. Participants utilize labeling that is the discursive practice of producing explicit membership categorizations that are locally occasioned in talks. A category occurred in an interaction assigns a person to a particular social group. In fact, speakers exhibit their attitudes toward ethnicity in question by categorizing and describing ethnic characteristics and stances, and allude category terms through indirectly indexing membership categories. As immigrants encountered with difficulties to maintain their ethnic identity, assimilation takes its toll on one hand. Resistance, however, to the cultural pressure of the resident country leads them to have a unique type of ethnic identity on the other hand. This article examines how a Korean family employs MCD and CBA as self-representation for identities-in-practices. I will illustrate how, in conjunction with other resources, the participants show their identities in talk as a device which represents membership categories.

        민주적 학급풍토가 청소년의 정치참여 의도에 미치는 영향 -정치효능감의 매개효과-

        본 연구는 청소년의 정치적 태도 및 참여에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 민주적 학급풍토에 주목하였다. 청소년의 정치참여 능력 함양을 위해서는 내용적 측면의 교육도 중요하나 청소년이 경험하는 학교 환경 그 자체를 민주적으로 변화시키는 것 또한 중요하다. 청소년이 주로 생활하는 학교 공간 안에서 자연스럽게 민주적인 정치 과정을 경험하는 기회를 제공하는 것이 청소년의 민주적 시민의식 발달에 큰 영향을 미칠 수 있기 때문이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 민주적 학급풍토가 청소년의 정치참여 의도에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 또한 이 과정에서 정치효능감이 어떤 매개효과를 갖는지도 함께 살펴보았다. 한국청소년정책연구원의 청소년 역량지수 측정 및 국제비교 연구Ⅲ 조사 자료를 활용하였으며, 중·고등학교 학생 6,692명의 자료를 경로분석을 통해 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 민주적 학급풍토는 청소년의 정치참여 의도와 정치효능감 모두에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 민주적 학급풍토와 정치참여 의도의 관계에서 정치효능감의 매개효과는 통계적으로 유의미하였다. 셋째, 본 연구의 주요변수는 아니었지만 청소년의 성별, 연령, 부모와의 관계 및 친구와의 관계, 학업성취도, 참여활동 경험, 정치적 신뢰가 정치참여 의도에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 청소년이 경험하는 교실 환경이 민주적으로 조성될수록 시민적 삶에 필수적인 정치적 태도 및 참여가 긍정적인 방향으로 발달할 수 있다는 것을 보여준다. 본연구의 결과를 고려할 때, 청소년들이 주로 생활하는 교실 환경 그 자체가 시민적 역량 발달에 중요한 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 점을 인식할 필요가 있다. 교실 내에서 교사와 학생이 수평적인 관계를 형성하고, 민주적인 토론 분위기를 형성하는 등 청소년들이 학교 안에서 실제적인 민주주의를 일상적으로 경험할 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 것은 우리 청소년들이 바람직한 정치적 능력을 갖춘 민주시민으로 성장하는 데 큰 도움을 줄 수 있다. This study focused on the democratic classroom climate as a factor affecting the political attitude and participation of adolescents in later life. To this end, National Youth Policy Institute’s survey data was used, and the data of 6,692 middle and high school students was analyzed through path analysis. As a result of the analysis, first, it was found that the democratic classroom climate has a positive effect on both the political participation intention and the sense of political efficacy. Second, the indirect effect of political efficacy was statistically significant in the relationship between democratic classroom climate and political participation intention. Third, although not the main variables of this study, it was found that adolescents’ gender, age, social relationships with parents and friends, academic achievement, experience of participation activities, and political trust had a positive effect on the political participation intention. Therefore, findings show that the more the classroom climate is democratic, the more students can develop political attitudes and participation in a positive way. Considering the results, it is necessary to recognize that classroom climate can have an important influence on the development of civic competency. Providing opportunities to experience practical democracy on a daily basis can greatly help adolescents grow into democratic citizens with “desirable” political competency.

        Sub-centres, socio-economic characteristics and commuting: a case study and its implications

        Institutional and economic reforms in China have not only delivered major improvements in people’s living standards but also changed the spatial structure of Chinese cities. In addition, substantially increased commuting times have become a serious problem influencing quality of life in the mega-cities of China. Accordingly, research into the dynamics of urban restructuring in rapidly growing Chinese cities and the impacts on workers’ commuting patterns would provide important evidence in this research field. The results of this case study suggest that polycentric urban development has a significant influence on employees’ commuting times. Promoting local jobs-housing balance in sub-centres would shorten commuting times for workers. The findings also suggest that the locations and types of employment centres are significantly associated with individuals’ choice of housing and workplace locations, and accordingly their commuting behaviour. The effects of decentralization of employment on workers’ commuting times differ depending on the extent of suburbanization of different economic sectors. The findings in this research also suggest that workers’ commuting behaviour is related to individual socio-economic characteristics, such as income and education.

        Low cycle fatigue and ratcheting failure behavior of AH32 steel under uniaxial cyclic loading

        In this paper, the low cycle fatigue failure and ratcheting behavior, as well as their interaction of AH32 steel were experimentally investigated under uniaxial cyclic loading. The effects of mean stress, stress amplitude and stress ratio on the low cycle fatigue life and ratcheting strain were discussed. It was found that the ratcheting strain increased while the fatigue life decreased with the increase of mean stress and stress amplitude, and the increasing stress ratio would result in smaller ratcheting and larger fatigue life. Two kinds of failure modes, i.e. low cycle fatigue failure due to crack propagates and ratcheting failure due to large plastic strain will take place respectively. Based on the experimental results, considered the effect of ratcheting on fatigue life, a model with the maximum stress and ratcheting strain rate was proposed. Comparison with the experimental result showed that the new model provided a good prediction for AH32 steel.

      • Mobile-DeepLabv3+를 이용한 과수화상병 및 유상 질병 진단

        Fire blight is a highly contagious disease that currently lacks effective treatment. Therefore, prevention and early diagnosis are crucial to minimize damage. To enable efficient diagnosis of fire blight and similar diseases, a lightweight model called Mobile-DeepLabv3+ was utilized. Mobile-DeepLabv3+ is a model that replaces the ResNet-101 backbone of the DeepLabv3+ image segmentation model with MobileNetV2. A dataset comprising 1,257 images of fire blight and similar diseases, including black necrotic leaf spot and scab, was collected, and used to train the Mobile-DeepLabv3+ model. 1 The performance of the model was measured for each disease and compared with that of the Mask R-CNN and DETR models used in previous studies on fire blight image segmentation. The experimental results demonstrated that Mobile-DeepLabv3+ achieved the highest image segmentation performance (72.66% mIoU) among the three tested models, utilizing the least number of parameters.

      • Management and Annotation System of Crop Images with Disease and Pest

        The recognition of crop diseases and pests based on images is one of the required techniques to identify damage due to diseases and pests and to take efficient management and prior actions. With the development of deep learning technology, the image recognition of diseases and pests using deep learning exhibited excellent performance and plays an important role in managing and controlling diseases and pests of crops. However, research on image recognition of diseases and pests in crops is facing difficulties due to the lack of large-scale datasets about diseases and pests. To solve this problem, this study proposes a system to manage and annotate the images of diseases and pests that can efficiently manage collected disease and pest images to generate high-quality disease and pest datasets. The proposed disease and pest image management and annotation system can collect disease and pest images uploaded from various sources and create statistics of them. It can also provide image inspection and user-friendly annotation functions.

        Enhancing Natural Disaster Resilience through NGO Participation in China

        The purpose of this paper is to strengthen natural disaster resilience by providing strategic measures for NGOs to participate in disaster management in China. For the research purpose, this paper used the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis method to qualitatively analyze the internal and external environmental factors that NGOs face in the disaster management process, in combination with AHP to quantitatively analyze each factor. We suggested strategic measures for NGOs in the disaster management field at the public sector and NGO levels as follows; ① to supplement laws and policies; ② to strengthen supervision and auditing; ③ to emphasize participation enthusiasm; ④ to strengthen promotion; ⑤ to reinforce communication; ⑥ to train professional manpower through various channels; ⑦ to establish cooperative relationships with other actors, and ⑧ to pay attention to the vulnerable.

        Antimicrobial property of recombinant Lactolisterin BU in vitro and its initial application in pork refrigerated storage

        Lactolisterin BU is a novel bacteriocin identified from Lactococcus lactis in 2017. It exhibits antimicrobial activity against food spoilage and foodborne pathogens. In this study, Lactolisterin BU was expressed in Pichia pastoris (P. pastoris) and isolated from the supernatant of yeast culture for the first time. It was found to exhibit a broad antimicrobial spectrum and rapid bactericidal activity against foodborne bacterial pathogens, both gram-positive and gramnegative ones, with minimum inhibition concentrations ranging within 10–60 μg/mL. The recombinant Lactolisterin BU (rLactolisterin BU) also had an antioxidant effect and was resistant to heating, acid–base, and high-dose-saline treatments and barely had any hemolytic activity or cytotoxicity. Moreover, rLactolisterin BU effectively suppressed the growth of bacterial pathogens; suppressed the increases in pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) of pork samples; and maintained a high quality of fresh pork during storage at 4 ℃. Furthermore, rLactolisterin BU effectively inhibited the growth of three kinds of bacteria in a pork-spoilage model. Taken together, rLactolisterin BU could be a promising preservative for food storage.

      • 농작물 병증 분할을 위한 Mask R-CNN 및 Detection Transformer의 성능 비교

        농작물의 병해충 피해는 농가에 위협을 주는 요인 중 하나로 발병 초기에 신속한 조치를 취하지 않으면 빠르게 확산해 막대한 피해를 초래할 수 있다. 스마트폰 보급률 증가와 딥러닝을 이용한 컴퓨터 비전의 발전으로 스마트폰 기반의 병증 진단 방법은 병해충 조기 진단 및 이를 통한 피해 최소화에 도움을 주고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이미지 분할 모델인 Mask R-CNN과 Detection Transformer의 병해충 병증 부위 분할 성능을 비교했다. 모델의 성능을 비교하기 위해 배의 과수화상병, 검은별무늬병, 잎검은점병 이미지 1,257장을 이용해 데이터 셋을 구축했다. 실험 결과 Mask R-CNN의 병증 분할 성능이 75.33%로 Detection Transformer보다 약 5.04% 높은 성능을 기록했다.
