      • Effects of subsequent heat treatment on the shape memory behaviors of a Ti/Ni sheet fabricated by bonding and cold rolling of Ti/Ni multilayers

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>TiNi shape memory alloy (SMA) thin sheets with a thickness of 120μm were fabricated by the method of bonding and cold rolling and subsequent heat treatment of elemental Ti and Ni foils. The annealing temperature and time have been investigated with regard to their effects on the phase composites and microstructures of the as-roll-bonded Ti/Ni multilayers. It is found that the TiNi phase which shows shape memory effect is easily to be synthesized by the subsequent heat treatment even though it was preformed by annealing at a relatively low temperature of 650°C and for a short time of 6h. The shape memory effect has been examined by DSC for the fabricated TiNi thin sheets and it reveals a good martensitic and reverse transformation behavior from B2 to B19′ of <I>M</I><SUB>s</SUB> at around 60°C and transition hysteresis of about 30°C. A tensile test at the temperature above <I>A</I><SUB>f</SUB> revealed that recovery strains of average 1.5% in superelasticity has been obtained for the TiNi thin sheets.</P>

        Modernization without Democratization in the Digital Age: China's Micromanagement of Its Contentious State–Society Relations

        Conventional wisdom holds that economic modernization would lead to political liberalization and, eventually, democracy. However, China has been an exception to that prediction. China’s information revolution, the rapid popularization of informationand communication technology (ICT) at its core, has brought two important changes to the country’s state–society relations. First, the skillful diffusion of thought through ICT and the resulting openness of information have led to decentralization ofinformation and diversification of public opinion in Chinese society. Second, savvy handling of communications through ICT has transformed the organization and forms of political mobilization and participation in Chinese politics. While China’s politicalsystem is becoming increasingly unstable and repressive, it is imperative for the Chinese government to control the political outcomes of the country’s dramatic economic and social transformation. Through conceptual discussions, policy analyses, and casestudies, this article investigates why China’s authoritarian government has been able to handle the ICT-related changes and manage the challenges generated by the country’s rapidly evolving state–society relations in the digital age.

        Excessive mechanical strain accelerates intervertebral disc degeneration by disrupting intrinsic circadian rhythm

        Night shift workers with disordered rhythmic mechanical loading are more prone to intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). Our results showed that circadian rhythm (CR) was dampened in degenerated and aged NP cells. Long-term environmental CR disruption promoted IDD in rats. Excessive mechanical strain disrupted the CR and inhibited the expression of core clock proteins. The inhibitory effect of mechanical loading on the expression of extracellular matrix genes could be reversed by BMAL1 overexpression in NP cells. The Rho/ROCK pathway was demonstrated to mediate the effect of mechanical stimulation on CR. Prolonged mechanical loading for 12 months affected intrinsic CR genes and induced IDD in a model of upright posture in a normal environment. Unexpectedly, mechanical loading further accelerated the IDD in an Light-Dark (LD) cycle-disrupted environment. These results indicated that intrinsic CR disruption might be a mechanism involved in overloading-induced IDD and a potential drug target for night shift workers.

      • Feasibility of Shrinking Field Radiation Therapy through 18F-FDG PET/CT after 40 Gy for Stage III Non-Small Cell Lung Cancers

        Objective: To explore the feasibility of shrinking field technique after 40 Gy radiation through 18F-FDG PET/CT during treatment for patients with stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: In 66 consecutive patients with local-advanced NSCLC, 18F-FDG PET/CT scanning was performed prior to treatment and repeated after 40 Gy. Conventionally fractionated IMRT or CRT plans to a median total dose of 66Gy (range, 60-78Gy) were generated. The target volumes were delineated in composite images of CT and PET. Plan 1 was designed for 40 Gy to the initial planning target volume (PTV) with a subsequent 20-28 Gy-boost to the shrunken PTV. Plan 2 was delivering the same dose to the initial PTV without shrinking field. Accumulated doses of normal tissues were calculated using deformable image registration during the treatment course. Results: The median GTV and PTV reduction were 35% and 30% after 40 Gy treatment. Target volume reduction was correlated with chemotherapy and sex. In plan 2, delivering the same dose to the initial PTV could have only been achieved in 10 (15.2%) patients. Significant differences (p<0.05) were observed regarding doses to the lung, spinal cord, esophagus and heart. Conclusions: Radiotherapy adaptive to tumor shrinkage determined by repeated 18F-FDG PET/CT after 40 Gy during treatment course might be feasible to spare more normal tissues, and has the potential to allow dose escalation and increased local control.

        尤侗의 「조선죽지사(朝鮮竹枝詞)」에 대하여

        尤侗(1618~1704)은 明末淸初의 명망 높은 詩人으로 청나라 최고의 지식인들인 朱彛尊, 王士禎등과 교분이 깊었으며 翰林院侍講으로 존경받던 인물이다. 그가 지은『外國竹枝詞』 100수는 동아시아는 물론, 유럽, 남미에 이르기까지 전 세계를 아우르는 작품으로 그 첫머리에 「朝鮮竹枝詞」를 읊고 있다. 우통은 문학과 예악을 모두 갖춘 문명국으로, 동문으로서의 조선을 노래하였다. 그는 허난설헌의 상량문을 모의하여 「廣寒宮白玉樓上梁文」을 지었을 뿐만 아니라, 현재 실전되어 전하지 않는 『朝鮮採風錄』의 여러 작품을 자신의 문집인 『艮齋雜說』에 실어 전해 내려오게 함으로써 조선문학을 널리 중국에 알린 인물이기도 하다. 「朝鮮竹枝詞」는 후대 徐振과 柏?등이 『조선죽지사』를 짓는 데 있어 전범을 마련하였을 뿐만 아니라 조선 문인들에게도 외국죽지사 창작에 적지 않은 영향을 끼쳤다. 「朝鮮竹枝詞」에는 王士禎과 毛奇齡등의 書尾評도 함께 고찰할 수 있어 당대 청대 지식인들이 조선에 대한 동문 의식을 살필 수 있는 중요한 자료가 될수 있다. YouTong(1618~1704) was a renowned poet during the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty. He had a deep friendship with ZhuYiZun and WangShiZhen who were leading intellectuals at that period. YouTong authored one hundred songs in Foreign Jukjisa(Foreign folk songs) which encompassed Europe and South America as well as East asia. He placed Joseonjukjisa at the beginning of this anthology. YouTong praised Joseon as one of the civilized countries with their own literatures and ritual musics. He authored Gwanghangung Baegongnu sangnyangmun, imitating Heonanseolheon's Sangnyangmun. In addition, he contributed enormously to make Joseon literature come to Chinese people''s knowledge by including Joseonchaepungnok in his Geunjaejapseol. The original Geunjaejapseol had disappeared in Joseon. YouTong''s Joseonjukjisa was a classic model for XuZhen and BaiJun''s Joseonjukjisa and had a significant effect on Joseon literati. The book-end commentaries by WangShiZhen and MaoQiLing are the precious references for our study of the Qing intellectuals''consciousness that they share same literary background with Joseon intellectuals.

      • Correlation between E-Cadherin-Regulated Cell Adhesion and Human Osteosarcoma MG-63 Cell Anoikis

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between cell adhesion and anoikis evasion among human osteosarcoma cells (MG-63), and to further study the molecular mechanisms. Materials and Methods: Human osteosarcoma cells (MG-63) were assessed for apoptosis, and caspase-3, E-cadherin and ${\beta}$-catenin expression in EDTA and control non-EDTA groups. Results: MG-63 cells were predominantly aggregated when in suspension, and the suspended cells were more dispersed in the EDTA group. Following culture in suspension for 24 h, 48 h, or 72 h, the rates of apoptosis were $34.88%{\pm}3.64%$, $59.3%{\pm}7.22%$ and $78.5%{\pm}5.21%$ in the experimental group and $7.34%{\pm}2.13%$, $14.7%{\pm}3.69%$, and $21.4%{\pm}3.60%$ in the control group, respectively. Caspase-3 expression progressively increased and E-cadherin and ${\beta}$-catenin were decreased in the experimental group, whereas there was no change in the control group. Conclusions: MG-63 cells could avoid anoikis through cell adhesion, and E-cadherin might play a role in this process.

        관풍(觀風)과 악부풍(樂府風) 조선한시(朝鮮漢詩)의 선록(選錄)과 비평 연구 -중국 강희 연간 주이준(朱彝尊)과 우통(尤侗)을 중심으로-

        17세기 강희문단의 대가인 주이준(朱彝尊)과 우통(尤侗)은 조선 문화를 중국에 널리 알린 인물이다. 이 중에서 다른 지방의 풍속을 자세히 살피는 특징을 지닌 관풍(觀風)과 음악적 요소의 특징을 지닌 악부풍(樂府風) 조선 한시의 선록과 비평은 중국 문단뿐만 아니라 조선문단에 큰 영향을 끼쳤다. 『명사(明史)』「예문지(藝文志)」 편찬에 참여한 주이준과 우통의 조선 한시 선록과 비평은 17세기 강희문단에서 조선시의 ‘재발견’이었으며 ‘재조명’이었다. 따라서 당대 대가들의 시학관(詩學觀)과 시풍은 조선 한시의 선록에 있어서 직접적으로 작용을 하였고, 이후 건륭연간을 거쳐 19세기말 20세기 초까지 이어진 중국 문사들의 조선 한시 수록과 비평에 큰 토대를 마련하였다. 특히 강희(康熙) 연간 청나라 문단의 주류 문풍 즉 성정(性情)과 언지(言志), 그리고 온유돈후(溫柔敦厚)를 위주로 하는 당풍(唐風)은 시대적 사조로서 동아시아 문단에 적지 않은 영향을 미쳤다. 조선 <황화집(皇華集)> 또한 외교문학으로 관각성을 띠었다는데서 저평가되었지만 강희 연간 재조명된 <황화집>의 작품은 그 문학성이 높이 평가되었다. 비록 주이준과 우통의 조선한시 선록과 비평은 17세기 교류의 제한으로 인한 자료 고증의 한계를 지니고 있지만 한중문화교류사를 재조명하는 사료로서의 큰 의미를 지닌다. 특히 조선후기에 한중양국 문인들 사이에 광범위하고 활발하게 이루어진 문학교류를 기록하고 있는 ‘연행록’을 연구하는 데 있어서 하나의 방향으로 제시될 것이다. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty in the Qing Dynasty (17th century), Hanlin Scholar Zhu Yi Zun and You Tong, the important representative of the spread of Joseon culture, who used "Guanfeng(singing the praises of customs)" and "Yuefufeng(music)" criticizing Joseon poetry, through this, Joseon Han poetry was recognized in the Chinese literary world and was deeply favored by the literati in the Qing Dynasty. The mainstream style of Chinese literary circles in the Kangxi period was "temperament", "words", and "gentle and honest" Tang Feng. Zhu Yizun and You Tong, who participated in selecting and criticizing Joseon poetry such as "Ming Shi" and "Yi Wen Zhi", have important historical significance for the Joseon culture to enter the Kangxi literary world in the seventeenth century. In addition, Joseon’s "Huanghuaji" and other diplomatic literature were re-recognized by the international literary world through the selection of Zhu Yizun(朱彛尊), Wu Dong(尤侗) and You Tong. At the same time, Zhu Yizun and You Tong's selection and criticism of Joseon Han poetry laid a good foundation for Chinese literati to select and criticize Joseon poetry from the Qianlong period to the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, and had far-reaching influence. It is undeniable that Zhu Yizun and You Tong’s selection and criticism of Joseon Han poetry were biased because of cultural barriers and lack of information between China and Joseon in the 17th century. However, the influence of poetry and poetry style on the selection of Joseon poetry in the literary world at that time was still very huge. Zhu Yizun and You Tong's selection and criticism of Joseon Han poetry are important historical documents in the history of Joseon-Chinese cultural exchanges, and became a guidebook on the study on the widely active literary exchange database between Joseon and Chinese literati in the late Joseon period - "Yan Xing Lu".

        Comparison of carcass and meat quality traits between lean and fat Pekin ducks

        Objective: According to market demand, meat duck breeding mainly includes 2 breeding directions: lean Pekin duck (LPD) and fat Pekin duck (FPD). The aim of the present study was to compare carcass and meat quality traits between 2 strains, and to provide basic data for guidelines of processing and meat quality improvement. Methods: A total of 62 female Pekin ducks (32 LPDs and 30 FPDs) were slaughtered at the age of 42 days. The live body weight and carcass traits were measured and calculated. Physical properties of breast muscle were determined by texture analyzer and muscle fibers were measured by paraffin sections. The content of inosine monophosphate (IMP), intramuscular fat (IMF) and fatty acids composition were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography, Soxhlet extraction method and automated gas chromatography respectively. Results: The results showed that the bodyweight of LPDs was higher than that of FPDs. FPDs were significantly higher than LPDs in subcutaneous fat thickness, subcutaneous fat weight, subcutaneous fat percentage, abdominal fat percentage and abdominal fat shear force (p<0.01). LPDs were significantly higher than FPDs in breast muscle thickness, breast muscle weight, breast muscle rate and breast muscle shear force (p<0.01). The muscle fiber average area and fiber diameter of LPDs were significantly higher than those of FPDs (p<0.01). The muscle fiber density of LPDs was significantly lower than that of FPDs (p<0.01). The IMF of LPDs in the breast muscle was significantly higher than that in the FPDs (p<0.01). There was no significant difference between the 2 strains in IMP content (p>0.05). The polyunsaturated fatty acid content of LPDs was significantly higher than that of FPDs (p<0.01), and FPDs had higher saturated fatty acid and monounsaturated fatty acid levels (p<0.05). Conclusion: Long-term breeding work resulted in vast differences between the two strains Pekin ducks. This study provides a reference for differences between LPD and FPD that manifest as a result of long-term selection.

      • Fibulin-5 is a Prognostic Marker that Contributes to Proliferation and Invasion of Human Glioma Cells

        Fibulin-5 has recently been considered as a potential tumor suppressor in human cancers. Several studies have shown that it is down-regulated in a variety of tumor types and inhibits tumor growth and metastasis. This study was aimed to investigate the clinical significance of fibulin-5 in glioma and its role in cell proliferation and invasion. We found that the expression of fibulin-5 in glioma tissues was significantly lower than those in normal brain (NB) tissues. Negative expression was significantly correlated with advanced clinical stage (grade III+IV). Furthermore, Fibulin-5 negative expression was correlated with a shorter overall survival of glioma patients. Multivariate Cox repression analysis indicated that fibulin-5 was an independent factor for predicting overall survival of glioma patients. Overexpression obviously inhibited cell proliferation in U251 and U87 cells. Furthermore, it significantly reduced the number of migrating and invading glioma cells. In conclusion, impaired expression of fibulin-5 is correlated with the advanced tumor stage in glioma. Otherwise, Fibulin-5 is an independent prognostic marker for predicting overall survival of glioma patients. Mechanistically, it may function as a tumor suppressor via inhibiting cell proliferation and invasion in gliomas.
