Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between clinical variables such as body mass index, blood pressure, drug use and oxidative stress level in children and adolescents with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: Total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), oxidative stress index (OSI), malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were measured in the serum of 51 patients (38 male, 13 female) diagnosed with ADHD according to DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and 32 control subjects (12 male, 20 female). The Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia Present and Lifetime Version was applied to all participants. Results: The mean TOS, OSI, MDA values were determined to be significantly higher (p < 0.001) and the mean SOD value was lower in the ADHD group (p < 0.001). Multivariate regression analysis indicated significantly lower SOD and diastolic blood pressure values and significantly higher MDA in the ADHD group compared to the control group (p < 0.01). Low SOD (sensitivity 90.2%, specificity 78.0%) and high MDA (sensitivity 86.3%, specificity 81.2%) were determined to be predictive parameters for diagnosing ADHD. In univariate analysis, the mean TOS, OSI and SOD values were higher in ADHD patients under medication, while the mean TAS was higher in patients not using medication (p < 0.01). Only TOS was significant in multivariate logistic regression analysis (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate that impaired oxidative balance may play a role in the etiology of ADHD.
Feasibility of Atmospheric-Pressure CO Cold Plasma for Reduction of Supported Metal Ions
Di, L.,Zhang, X.,Lee, B.,Lu, P.,Ahn, W. S.,Park, D. W. Springer Science + Business Media 2017 Plasma chemistry and plasma processing Vol.37 No.6

An atmospheric pressure (AP) carbon monoxide (CO) cold plasma method was developed and employed to reduce supported metal ions for the first time. HAuCl4, AgNO3, H2PtCl6, and Pd(NO3)(2) ions supported on a commercial sample of TiO2 (Degussa P25) were reduced by AP CO cold plasma. The results of UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicate that the supported metal ions are reduced to their metallic states. Au/P25-CP and Au/P25-HP were prepared by CO and H-2 cold plasma, respectively, to investigate the reduction ability of CO cold plasma. XPS and transmission electron spectroscopy analyses show that the gold nanoparticles in Au/P25-CP and Au/P25-HP exist in the form of metallic gold, and exhibit similar size. Interestingly, a blue shift of the surface plasmon resonance peak was observed for Au/P25-CP because of the amorphous carbon formed by CO dissociation. In situ optical emission spectrum of the CO cold plasma was recorded and excited CO molecules were deemed to be the reducing agents. CO cold plasma was also adopted to reduce P25 supported copper ions, while metallic copper nanoparticles were obtained accompanied by a certain amount of oxidized copper species. AP CO cold plasma is as effective as H-2 plasma for reducing supported metal ions, and has great potential for tuning the SPR absorption.

Three new fungal species of the genus Mortierella, Mortierella zychae, Mortierella ambigua, and Mortierella indohii, have been reported in Korea. The fungi were encountered during a study on the fungal community of soil samples collected from different locations in Korea. The species were identified based on molecular and morphological analyses. This study presents detailed descriptions of the morphological observations and molecular phylogenetic analysis of these three fungi. All three species were found to be sensitive to triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining. M. zychae demonstrated the highest intensity of mycelial staining, indicating that this species has the highest potential to produce arachidonic acid of the three species. The staining results indicated that the newly recorded species could potentially be useful for arachidonic acid production.
Violence and Therapy in Murakami Haruki's Kafka on the Shore
Dil, Jonathan 성균관대학교 동아시아학술원 2010 Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.10 No.1
Popular Japanese author Murakami Haruki's tenth novel, Kafka on the Shore, has been criticised by some for its overly therapeutic tone. This novel, these critics argue, kids to adequately address the central question of violence it raises and offers readers a false sense of psychological security. A more sympathetic reading of these therapeutic themes is possible, however, especially when the novel is situated within the wider historical context of its production. Employing both Jungian and Lacanian perspectives, this essay argues that the central protagonist's journey in Kafka on the Shore, from fear to forgiveness, is a legitimate response to the anxieties of the age and is heroic in nature. Nevertheless, this psychological victory is complicated and even partially undermined by competing themes and narratives in the work. Kafka on the Shore is thus a less reassuring novel than critics suggest and offers a complex view of the possibilities and limitations inherent in a therapeutic approach to the problem of violence in contemporary Japan.

This study was carried out to explore a non-chemical strategy for enhancing productivity by employing some antagonistic rhizobacteria. One hundred eighteen bacterial isolates were obtained from the rhizospheric zone of various crop fields of Gangwon-do, Korea, and screened for antifungal activity against Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lactucae) in lettuce crop under in vitro and in vivo conditions. In broth-based dual culture assay, fourteen bacterial isolates showed significant inhibition of mycelial growth of F. oxysporium f. sp. lactucae. All of the antagonistic isolates were further characterized for the antagonistic traits under in vitro conditions. The isolates were identified on the basis of biochemical characteristics and confirmed at their species level by 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis. Arthrobacter sulfonivorans, Bacillus siamensis, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Pseudomonas proteolytica, four Paenibacillus peoriae strains, and Bacillus subtilis were identified from the biochemical characterization and 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis. The isolates EN21 and EN23 showed significant decrease in disease severity on lettuce compared to infected control and other bacterial treatments under greenhouse conditions. Two bacterial isolates, EN4 and EN21, were evaluated to assess their disease reduction and growth promotion in lettuce in field conditions. The consortium of EN4 and EN21 showed significant enhancement of growth on lettuce by suppressing disease caused by F. oxysporum f. sp. lactucae respectively. This study clearly indicates that the promising isolates, EN4 (P. proteolytica) and EN21 (Bacillus siamensis), can be commercialized and used as biofertilizer and/or biopesticide for sustainable crop production.
Generalized Parallel Transport and Coordinate Transformations in f(R) Gravity
Emre Dil 한국물리학회 2016 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.69 No.12
In this paper, we study the generalized parallel transport of vectors and generalized coordinate transformations between generalized reference frames described in f(R) gravity. After constructing the generalized parallel transport relations and the generalized transformation laws in f(R) gravity, we discuss the implications of these laws and present the differences between f(R) gravity and Einstein’s general relativity. For a constant Ricci scalar case with de Sitter-like behavior for a de Sitter space-time, we find that the parallel transport is invariant under the conformal transformation from general relativity to f(R) gravity. However, for a non-de Sitter space-time, parallel transport differs by an extra field term.
Gravitational Entropy of a Schwarzschild-Type Black Hole
Emre Dil 한국물리학회 2016 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.69 No.1
In this study, Clifton, Ellis and Tavakol’s gravitational entropy proposal is used to determine the entropy of free gravitational fields due to a spherical symmetric Schwarzschild-type black hole which is considered in the framework of f(R) gravity. In order to obtain the gravitational entropy, we calculate the Weyl tensor of the black hole to determine the Bel-Robinson tensor, giving the super energy density. By using the super energy density, we obtain the gravitational energy density and the gravitational temperature to calculate the gravitational entropy of the f(R) gravity black hole. This proposal can reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking value in general relativity limit, but cannot reproduce it in the f(R) gravity case.
