      • Motivation of Attendees to Cultural Festival : An Exploratory Study

Dev Jani 세계문화관광학회 2008 Conference Proceedings Vol.9 No.0

Cultural festivals and events have become an important attraction to both the local community and tourists. In order to attract visitors to cultural events, event organizers and stakeholders have to understand why attendees would like to attend a particular event. Despite the growing importance of cultural events, very few academic researches have been carried to elucidate attendees' motivation to attend cultural events particularly in the African context. This paper fills the void in the attendees' motivation to cultural events through answering "What motivates attendees to participate in a cultural music festival?" Sauti za Busara (Sounds of Wisdom) music festival that is held annually for four days within first two weeks of February in the Zanzibar Island off the shore of Tanzania was used as a case study. Four hundred self-administered questionnaires were filled and returned by the attendees. The data obtained were subjected to qualitative and quantitative analysis where thematic analysis was performed on the qualitative data and descriptive together with cross tabs and Chi square analysis were performed for the quantitative data. Male attendees were twice the female and more than 70% were youth (18-39 years). Reasons for attending the festival include entertainment, education, and experiencing different cultures. Most locals were after the educational while tourists were after cultural experience. Empirically, motivation to attend a cultural event is influenced by attendees' country of origin, gender, and age. Both locals and tourists believe cultural festivals to have positive social and economic value and some negative social and environmental consequences. Event organizers and marketers need to promote events according to the possible attendees' motivation that depends on attendees' as well as socio-cultural factors. Other event stakeholders have to address the actual and perceived negative consequences of cultural event for them to be sustainable.

Blunt abdominal trauma resulting in pancreatic injury in a pediatric patient in Australia: a case report

        Dev Harmanjit,Kikiros Colin 대한외상학회 2023 大韓外傷學會誌 Vol.36 No.3

Pancreatic trauma from a blunt injury is fairly uncommon in the pediatric population. Furthermore, such trauma with associated disruption of the pancreatic duct (PD) is even less prevalent and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Pancreatic injuries in the pediatric population are often missed and hence require a thorough workup in children presenting with any form of abdominal injury. This case report describes a young boy who presented with abdominal pain and did not initially inform medical staff about any injury. For this reason, his initial provisional diagnosis was appendicitis, but he was later found to have transection of the pancreas with injury to the PD on imaging. The management of such injuries in pediatric patients often poses a challenge due to a lack of pediatric physicians trained to perform interventions such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. Furthermore, such interventions carry a higher risk when performed on children due to the smaller size of their pancreatic ducts. As a result, our patient had to be transferred to an adult center to undergo this procedure. Thus, maintaining a high degree of suspicion, along with a detailed history and examination, is crucial for the early diagnosis and management of pancreatic injuries.

Human Resource Management and Industrial Relation in Nepal

Dev Raj Adhikari 한국비교노동법학회 2006 노동법논총 Vol.9 No.-

Human resource management (HRM) and industrial relations (IRs) are the key areas of concern for our organisations in order to increase employees' commitment and contribution. Over a long period of time personnel management (old version of HRM) practices have made decimal contribution for enhancing commitment of employees at work in Nepal. The concept of industrial relations was developed very late. Realising this fact, a detail Cranefield Network (Cranet) survey3) was undertaken in the year 2004 including 204 Nepalese organisations representing from different sectors to investigate the current trends of development in the management of human resource management and industrial relations. This paper presents asummary of the findings of the survey and concludes that HRM and IR still to emerge to enhance performance of Nepalese organizations.

      • Differential Effects of Tourism Resources on the Attractiveness of Destination Bundles

Dev Jani,Chang-Ik Jang,Yeong-Hyeon Hwang 한국관광학회 2009 International Journal of Tourism Sciences Vol.9 No.1

This research aimed at examining the influence of destination resource characteristics of a destination bundle on the attractiveness of the bundle. Data for this study were obtained through a survey of conveniently selected students from the Seoul Institute of the Arts (n=286). Susan was selected as a main destination and five nearby cities (i.e., Geoje, Gyeongju, Daegu, Ulsan, and Jinju) within one hour driving or ferry riding distance range were selected as a secondary destination. Respondents were asked to indicate the attractiveness of 5 destination bundles (i.e., combinations of 5 additional destinations and Susan) on a 10-point Liker type scale. Respondents were also asked to evaluate eight different aspects of tourism resource (i.e., natural resource, cultural heritage, festivals, leisure and sports activity, recreation facility, accommodation facility, shopping facility, and food) of each destination on a 5-point Likert type scale ranges from 1 'very limited' to 5 'very rich.' The results indicate that tourists tend to prefer a destination bundle which provides a better potential opportunity of tourism experience. However, the influence of resources appears not to be consistent across different bundles Some aspects of resource do not have significant impacts; furthermore, some aspects (i.e., shopping facility) appear to have a significant negative impact. Implications and suggestions for future research are addressed.

      • Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Indices as a proxy for Policy and Business Environment: Comparison of Tanzania, South Africa, and Switzerland

Dev Jani 한양대학교 유럽-아프리카연구소 2022 글로벌 거버넌스와 문화 Vol.2 No.1

Tourism is a growing industry in developing countries like Tanzania. Being among the major sources of export earnings and employing a significant percentage of locals as well as having multi-stakeholders, both from the private and public arena, the presence of efficient and effective public-private partnership (PPP) is crucial. Using the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness data of the World Economic Forum, this paper aimed at answering two major questions: is the government prioritizing travel and tourism industry? Does the government create a conducive environment for travel and tourism business to flourish compared to selected governments? The analysis of the data provides a proxy on the PPP in the Tanzanian tourism industry. Specifically, overall competitiveness, prioritization of travel and tourism, price competitiveness, business environment, tourist arrivals, and tourism receipts were used to calculate relevant ratios. Generally, the results indicate both prioritization of travel and tourism and the business environment not to have substantially improved over the years. The ratios of prioritization over the business environment and business environment over price competitiveness over the years approached 1 indicating the government trying to balance the two variables. Compared to selected countries (South Africa and Switzerland), the results indicate Tanzania is yet to have balanced policies and creation of favorable business environment for tourism. The results provide insights to the government on elements that need to be streamlined to make the country more competitive.

      • User Generated Electronic Content and Destination Image

        Dev Jani,Yeong-Hyeon Hwang 세계문화관광학회 2009 Conference Proceedings Vol.10 No.0

Despite the increase in the usage of User Generated Electronic Content as an information source by tourists, its influence in destination image formation is not yet fully researched. This research fills gap by ascertaining the communicated image held by tourists to Zanzibar Island (Tanzania). Content analysis on 95 communications yielded 13 destinations attributes. Comparatively, functional attributes were dominant to potential tourists while psychological attributes in post travel image perception. Those who have visited tended to have a positive image of the Island. Results imply the differential use of the functional and psychological based information in communicating with tourists at different information search stages. Studies to capture communications in another language is recommended as well as employing methodologies that might reveal hidden images held by tourists.

      • CAPITAL STRUCTURE CONVERGENCE AND A DOMINANT-COUNTRY EFFECT: A CASE STUDY OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

        Dev Prasad,Yash R Puri,Walayet A Khan,H Kent Baker People&Global Business Association 2007 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.12 No.1

This exploratory study examines the impact of the formation of the European Union (EU) at the microeconomic level. Specifically, the study investigates the impact on a firm's capital structure by investigating whether capital structures are becoming more homogeneous across 10 EU countries over time, and whether a dominant-country effect exists. The results suggest movement toward convergence in capital structures across EU economies during the period examined. This evidence, which is particularly true for industrial firms, indicates an increase in homogeneity for companies in this economic community. The evidence also indicates the presence of a dominant-country effect. Specifically, the capital structures in the smaller EU economies lend to converge on the French capital structure. These changes in capital structure have implications for investors due to changes in the value of the firm as well as policy makers due to the changed needs of the market microstructure.
