The Serum Levels of Resistin and Its Relationship with Other Proinflammatory Cytokines in Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease

        Seden Demirci,Ayşe Aynalı,Kadir Demirci,Serpil Demirci,Buket Cicioğlu Arıdoğan 대한정신약물학회 2017 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.15 No.1

Objective: The present study aims to analyze the levels of resistin, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-18, and C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and also investigate a potential relationship between resistin levels and TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-18, and CRP levels in patients with AD. Methods: The study included fifty patients with AD and 30 healthy controls with normal cognitive functions. The serum resistin, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-18, and CRP levels were assessed. We performed a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) to evaluate the general cognitive performance. Results: The mean serum resistin, IL-1β, IL-18, and TNF-α levels were significantly higher in patients with AD compared with the controls (p=0.026, p=0.002, p=0.003, and p=0.038, respectively). The IL-6 and CRP levels did not differ between the groups (p=0.874 and p=0.941). The resistin levels were positively correlated with the levels of CRP and IL-18 (r=0.526, p<0.001; r=0.402, p=0.004, respectively). MMSE scores and inflammatory markers were not correlated (p>0.05 for all). Conclusion: Serum resistin levels were significantly increased and correlated with some inflammatory markers in AD patients, suggesting that resistin might play a role in the inflammatory process of AD.

RINGS WITH VARIATIONS OF FLAT COVERS

Demirci, Yilmaz Mehmet,Turkmen, Ergul The Honam Mathematical Society 2019 호남수학학술지 Vol.41 No.4

We introduce flat e-covers of modules and define e-perfect rings as a generalization of perfect rings. We prove that a ring is right perfect if and only if it is semilocal and right e-perfect which generalizes a result due to N. Ding and J. Chen. Moreover, in the light of the fact that a ring R is right perfect if and only if flat covers of any R-module are projective covers, we study on the rings over which flat covers of modules are (generalized) locally projective covers, and obtain some characterizations of (semi) perfect, A-perfect and B-perfect rings.

A KOROVKIN TYPE APPROXIMATION THEOREM FOR DOUBLE SEQUENCES OF POSITIVE LINEAR OPERATORS OF TWO VARIABLES IN A-STATISTICAL SENSE

Demirci, Kamil,Dirik, Fadime Korean Mathematical Society 2010 대한수학회보 Vol.47 No.4

In this paper, we obtain a Korovkin type approximation theorem for double sequences of positive linear operators of two variables from $H_w$ (K) to C (K) via A-statistical convergence. Also, we construct an example such that our new approximation result works but its classical case does not work. Furthermore, we study the rates of A-statistical convergence by means of the modulus of continuity.

Demirci, Nilgun Yilmaz,Ulger, Sukran,Yilmaz, Ulku,Aydogdu, Koray,Yilmaz, Aydin,Erdogan, Yurdanur Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.11

Background: The incidence of lung cancer increases with age. Approximately 50% of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients are over 70 years old. Because of the increasing elderly population, treatment approaches in this age group continue to be studied similar to groups of young people. Materials and Methods: In the current study, 26 patients who underwent radical surgery and adjuvan chemoradiation at Ataturk Chest Diseases and Chest Surgery Training and Research Hospital were evaluated retrospectively. Results: Of 21 patients (81%) were male and the average age was 74.4. Lobectomy was performed in 18 cases, pneumonectomy in 3, sleeve lobectomy in 3 and bilobectomy in 2. There was no perioperative or early period mortality. Overall survival was 24.5 months. Conclusions: From our study, lung cancer surgery and adjuvant therapy can be performed safely with low morbidity in the elderly.

      • The Effect of Cross-Shore Sediment Transport on Bar Parameters: an Experimental Study

Demirci, Mustafa,Akoz, M. Sami Korean Society of Ocean Engineers 2012 International journal of ocean system engineering Vol.2 No.1

The cross-shore sediment transport in a coastal region causes the important changes in beach morphological properties. The accurate estimation of the cross-shore sediment transport is important for the designing of the marine structures such as seawalls, jetties, breakwaters etc, and the preventing coastal erosion and accretion due to on-off shore sediment transportation. In this study, the experiments on cross- shore sediment transport carried out in a laboratory wave channel for initial beach slopes of 1/8, 1/10 and 1/15. Using the regular waves with different deep-water wave steepness generated by a pedal-type wave generator, the geometrical characteristics of beach profiles under storm conditions and the parameters affecting on-off shore sediment transport are investigated for the beach materials having medium diameters of $d_{50}$=0.25, 0.32, 0.45, 0.62 and 0.80 mm. The experimental results obtained from this study compared with previous experimental work and found to be of the same magnitude as the experimental measurements and followed the expected basic trend.

Investigation of bar parameters occurred by cross-shore sediment transport

Demirci, Mustafa,Akoz, M. Sami The Society of Naval Architects of Korea 2013 International Journal of Naval Architecture and Oc Vol.5 No.2

Cross-shore sediment transport is very important factor in the design of coastal structures, and the beach profile is mainly affected by a number of parameters, such as wave height and period, beach slope, and the material properties of the bed. In this study cross-shore sediment movement was investigated using a physical model and various offshore bar geometric parameters were determined by the resultant erosion profile. The experiments on cross- shore sediment transport carried out in a laboratory wave channel for initial base slopes of 1/8, 1/10 and 1/15. Using the regular waves with different deep-water wave steepness generated by a pedal-type wave generator, the geometrical of sediment transport rate and considerable characteristics of beach profiles under storm conditions and bar parameters affecting on-off shore sediment transport are investigated for the beach materials with the medium diameter of $d_{50}$=0.25, 0.32, 0.45, 0.62 and 0.80 mm. Non-dimensional equations were obtained by using linear and non-linear regression methods through the experimental data and were compared with previously developed equations in the literature. The results have shown that the experimental data fitted well to the proposed equations with respect to the previously developed equations.

      • Lymphoproliferative Disorders in Multiple Primary Cancers

        Demirci, Umut,Ozdemir, Nuriye,Benekli, Mustafa,Babacan, Nalan Akgul,Cetin, Bulent,Baykara, Meltem,Coskun, Ugur,Zengin, Nurullah,Buyukberber, Suleyman Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.1

Background: Cancer survivors are at increased risk of second cancers. Lymphoproliferative disorders (LPD) are common neoplasms that are primary or subsequent cancers in cases of multiple primary cancer. We here analyzed metachronous or synchronous LPD in multiple primary cancers. Methods: Between 2001 and 2010, LPD were assessed retrospectively in 242 multiple primary cancers patients. Results: Forty nine (20.2%) patients with LPD were detected. Six patients had two LPD where one patient had three LPD. The median age of patients was 60.5 years (range: 28-81). LPD were diagnosed in 29 patients as primary cancer, in 23 patients as second cancer, and in three patients as third cancer in multiple primary cancers. Primary tumor median age was 56 (range: 20-79). Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (n=16), breast cancer (n=9), and lung cancer (n=6) were detected as subsequent cancers. Alklylating agents were used in 19 patients (43.2%) and 20 patients (45.5%) had received radiotherapy for primary cancer treatment. The median follow-up was 70 months (range: 7-284). Second malignancies were detected after a median of 51 months (range: 7-278), and third malignancies with a median of 18 months (range: 6-72). Conclusions: In this study, although breast and lung cancer were the most frequent detected solid cancers in LPD survivors, diffuse large B cell lymphoma was the most frequent detected LPD in multiple primary cancers.

      • Incidence and Clinicopathologic Features of Primary Lung Cancer: A North-Eastern Anatolia Region Study in Turkey (2006-2012)

Demirci, Elif,Daloglu, Ferah,Gundogdu, Cemal,Calik, Muhammet,Sipal, Sare,Akgun, Metin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.3

Background: Lung cancer is the most frequent cancer among men and second highest among women overall, including in Turkey. Cigarette smoking is the most important etiologic factor for the development of cancer in both men and women. Objective: To determine the lung cancer incidence in Northeastern Anatolia Region of Turkey with a focus on clinical properties, cancer subtypes, the relationships of tumors with cigarette smoking and radiological properties of the lesions. Materials and Methods: In a retrospective study design, 566 lung cancer cases diagnosed at the Pathology Department of Ataturk University in Erzurum over the last seven years extending from January 2006 to June 2012 were investigated. The results were compared with statistical analyses. Results: The most common histopathological subtype of primary bronchogenic carcinoma in our study was found to be the squamous cell carcinoma, 46.1% (261 out of 566), and the second was small cell lung carcinoma 15.7% (89 out of 566). Based on our data, an overall male predominance was noted with a male/female ratio of 6.1/1. While 296 (52.2%) of the patients were found to be smokers at the time of diagnosis, 125 (22.0%) were nonsmokers and 145 (25.6%) were ex-smokers. Smoking status was found to have a strong correlation with primary lung cancer (p<0.05), and there were significant differences between males and females (p<0.001). Conclusion: Although relative prominence of subtypes of lung cancers differ between Turkish and other populations, lung cancer overall remains as an important health problem in Turkey. Our findings stress the critical need for effective cancer prevention programs such as anti-smoking campaigns.

      • Luminescence Properties of Anthracene Chromophores in Cyclosiloxane-Based Hybrid Polymer Films

        Demirci, Ali,Yamamoto, Shunsuke,Matsui, Jun,Miyashita, Tokuji,Mitsuishi, Masaya Korean Society of Photoscience 2015 Rapid communication in photoscience Vol.4 No.1

Luminescence properties of anthracene chromophores were investigated. Anthracene chromophores were incorporated in cyclosiloxane-based hybrid polymers through one-pot hydrosilylation reaction. Using four-armed cyclosiloxanes, divinylterminated siloxane monomers, and 9-vinylanthracenes, anthracene-labeled hybrid polymers were prepared. Free-standing hybrid polymer films were prepared successfully by doctor-blade method and thermal treatment. The polymer films exhibit strong blue fluorescence from anthracene and its fluorescence lifetime was not influenced by the temperature, indicating that the movement of anthracene chromophores was restrained in cyclosiloxane-based hybrid polymer films.

      • Non-metastatic Upper Tract Transitional Cell Carcinoma: Single Center Experience

Demirci, Umut,Canda, Abdullah Erdem,Dede, Didem Sener,Cakici, Ozer Ural,Akinci, Muhammed Bulent,Yalcin, Bulent Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.2

Background: Upper tract transitional cell carcinomas (UTCC) are relatively uncommon but prognosis is generally worse than TCC of bladder. Methods: Between March 2004 and June 2012, patients with initial non-metastatic UTCC were assessed in the Medical Oncology and Urology Departments of Ataturk Training and Research Hospital. Results: A total of 11 patients with initially non-metastatic UTCC were detected in the 8 year period, all males. Median age of was 62 (range, 38-74). Six lesions were located in the renal pelvis and 5 in the ureter. Nephroureterectomy was performed in 9 patients, and distal ureterectomy and cuff excision of the bladder in the remaining 2. The majority (n= 9) had high grade tumors. Median primary tumor diameter was 3.5 cm (range, 0.7-10). Five patients (45.5%) were stage I, 2 (18.2%) were stage II, and 4 (36.4%) were stage III. While adjuvant chemotherapy was not applied for stage I and II disease (n= 7), 4 to 6 courses were applied for 3 of the stage III patients. Also one stage III case received adjuvant radiotherapy. Up to 100 months follow-up, median overall survival was 13 months (range, 5-100 months). While stage I and II patients are following-up without muscle-invasive progression, 2 of stage III patients demonstrated progression. Conclusion: We need more collaborative studies to determine management of especially pT3-pT4 patients with UTCC.
