      • Evaluation of Treatment Outcomes of Early-Stage Endometrial Cancer Radiotherapy: A Single Center Experience

        Demiral, S.,Beyzadeoglu, M.,Sager, O.,Dincoglan, F.,Uysal, B.,Gamsiz, H.,Akin, M.,Turker, T.,Dirican, B. Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.22

Background: Postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) in the management of early stage endometrial cancer (EC) is still controversial. Here we report our institutional experience with patients who received postoperative RT for stage I-II EC over a period of 35 years and assess potential predictors of local recurrence (LR), distant metastasis (DM), and overall survival (OS). Materials and Methods: A total of 188 patients undergoing postoperative RT for stage IA-II EC between 1977 and 2012 were evaluated. Some 96 received median 46 Gy whole pelvic radiotherapy (WPRT) (range: 40-60 Gy), 37 were given WPRT with vaginal cuff therapy (VCT), and 55 received only VCT either with brachytherapy (BT) or stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). Chemotherapy was given to 5 patients with uterine papillary serous carcinoma (UPSC). Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the effect of clinicopathological factors on LR, DM, and OS. Results: Median follow-up time was 11 years (range: 1-35 years). At the time of analysis, 34 patients were not alive. Of the 15 patients with LR, 7 (46.7%) recurred in the vaginal stump, 5 (33.3%) in the pelvic region, and 3 (20%) in the paraaortic nodal region, while 12 had distant metastasis. UPSC histology (p=0.027), sole VCT (p=0.041), high histologic grade (p=0.034), and age ${\geq}71$ (p=0.04) were poor prognostic factors on univariate analysis. Conclusions: In our patients receiving radiotherapy for early-stage EC, grade III disease and age ${\geq}71$ were associated with shorter OS whereas UPSC histology was an independent predictor for both LR and DM.

Deformation characteristics in micro-cutting of single crystal copper: effect of cutting tool geometry and friction

Murat Demiral,Fethi Abbassi,Ali Mamedov 대한기계학회 2022 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.36 No.4

The micro cutting process differs significantly from its counter partner - the macro-cutting process - due to the fact that the uncut chip thickness is comparable with the crystal size of the workpiece and the cutting edge radius. In this study, the effects of cutting tool geometry including its nose radius and rake angle as well as its frictional behavior against the workpiece on the deformation characteristics of the single crystal were investigated extensively. To this end, a three-dimensional hybrid finite-element smoothed particle hydrodynamics model of micro-cutting of face centered cubic copper was developed, where its behavior was simulated using a crystal-plasticity theory, implemented through a VUMAT Fortran subroutine in ABAQUS/Explicit. The model was verified using the experimentally obtained specific cutting energy, available in the literature. The total shear strain accumulated on all slip systems, the individual contributions of different slip systems, the shear angle, the ploughing force and maximum principal stress were evaluated for the varying parameters mentioned above.

Size effect in flexural behaviour of unidirectional GFRP composites

Murat Demiral,Ferhat Kadioglu,Vadim V. Silberschmidt 대한기계학회 2020 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.34 No.12

In this paper, the size effect in unidirectional (UD) laminated glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites subjected to quasi-static bending loading was investigated: the sensitivity of a specimen’s mechanical behaviour and failure mechanism to its geometry was studied. Composite beams with different numbers of 0° unidirectional plies were tested and their post-deformation structures were analysed microscopically. In the subsequent simulations, the intraply damage was modelled using continuum damage mechanics, implemented as a user-defined VUMAT subroutine in ABAQUS/Explicit, while cohesive zone elements were employed to characterize the delamination between different plies. It was observed that the flexural failure triggered the multiple delaminations; their location was studied. The influence of the size effect on the bending response of the UD composite beams was analysed in depth. The findings of the current study can be used to design modern structures made of composite materials.

Comparison of the shaping ability of novel thermally treated reciprocating instruments

Keskin, Cangul,Demiral, Murat,Sariyilmaz, Evren The Korean Academy of Conservative Dentistry 2018 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.43 No.2

Objectives: The present study aimed to evaluate the shaping ability of 2 thermally treated nickel-titanium reciprocating systems in simulated curved canals. Materials and Methods: Forty simulated canals were prepared to apical size 25 using Reciproc Blue R25 (VDW) and WaveOne Gold Primary (Dentsply Sirona) instruments. Standard pre- and post-preparation images were taken and superimposed. The removal of resin material was measured at 5 standard points: the canal orifice, halfway between the canal orifice and the beginning of the curve, the beginning of the curve, the apex of the curve, and the end-point of the simulated canal. The data were analysed using the independent sample t-test with a 5% significance threshold. Results: The canals in which Reciproc Blue R25 was used showed a significantly greater widening than those in which WaveOne Gold was used at 4 of the 5 measurement points (p < 0.05). The Reciproc Blue R25 instrument removed significantly more resin from the inner aspect of the curve at 2 of the 5 points and similar amounts at the remaining 3 points. At the 2 apical points, there was no significant difference between the Reciproc Blue R25 and WaveOne Gold Primary instruments. Conclusion: Both instruments respected the original canal anatomy; however, WaveOne Gold resulted in a more conservative shape with less transportation.

      • Thermal postbuckling of shear deformable multiscale hybrid composite beams

        Arameh Eyvazian,Chunwei Zhang,Mohammad Alkhedher,Murat Demiral,Afrasyab Khan,Tamer A. Sebaey 국제구조공학회 2021 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.27 No.4

This research is deal with thermal buckling and post-buckling of carbon nanotube/fiber/polymer composite beams. The beam is considered to be under uniform temperature rise. Firstly, the effective material properties of a two phase nanocomposite consisting of CNT and polymer are extracted. Then, the modified Chamis rule is utilized to obtain the equivalent thermo-mechanical properties of multiscale hybrid composite (MHC). Based on the first order shear deformation theory, Von-Karman type of geometrically nonlinear strain-deformation equations and also the virtual work rule, the equilibrium equations of a three phace composite beam are derived. Bifurcation buckling and also the thermal post-buckling is analysed using the generalized differential quadrature technique. In the thermal buckling phenomena, a linear eigenvalue problem is solved; however, due to the nonlinearity, the thermal postbuckling study is performed using an iterative displacement control strategy. After validation study, several novel results demonstrate the influences of length-to-thickness ratio, agglomeration of applied CNTs and fibers in the composite media and number and orientation of layers on the critical temperature and displacement loading path.

The Third Version of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire

2019 Safety and health at work Vol.10 No.4

Introduction: A new third version of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ III) has been developed in response to trends in working life, theoretical concepts, and international experience. A key component of the COPSOQ III is a defined set of mandatory core items to be included in national short, middle, and long versions of the questionnaire. The aim of the present article is to present and test the reliability of the new international middle version of the COPSOQ III. Methods: The questionnaire was tested among 23,361 employees during 2016e2017 in Canada, Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, and Turkey. A total of 26 dimensions (measured through scales or single items) of the middle version and two from the long version were tested. Psychometric properties of the dimensions were assessed regarding reliability (Cronbach a), ceiling and floor effects (fractions with extreme answers), and distinctiveness (correlations with other dimensions). Results: Most international middle dimensions had satisfactory reliability in most countries, though some ceiling and floor effects were present. Dimensions with missing values were rare. Most dimensions had low to medium intercorrelations. Conclusions: The COPSOQ III offers reliable and distinct measures of a wide range of psychosocial dimensions of modern working life in different countries; although a few measures could be improved. Future testing should focus on validation of the COPSOQ items and dimensions using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Such investigations would enhance the basis for recommendations using the COPSOQ III.

        Yaylaci, Selcuk,Tosun, Onder,Sahin, Orhan,Genc, Ahmet Bilal,Aydin, Ercan,Demiral, Gokhan,Karahalil, Fatma,Olt, Serdar,Ergenc, Hasan,Varim, Ceyhun Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.4

Background: Inflammatory hematological parameters like the neutrophil/lymphocyte (N/L) ratio have been investigated in many cancer types and significant relationships found with prognosis, for example. The aim of this present study was to investigate the impact of hematological parameters notably on N/L ratio and mean platelet volume (MPV) in papillary thyroid cancer cases. Materials and Methods: A total of 79 patients who underwent a thyroidectomy operation in Findikli, Goiter Research and Treatment Center during 2011-2015 period were enrolled in the study, 41 with papillary thyroid cancer and 38 with benign goiter confirmed by pathological examination. We collected clinical and laboratory data for the patients from hospital records retrospectively. Blood samples taken at admission were assessed for parameters compared between the groups. Results: No significant differences between papillary thyroid cancer and benign goiter groups were apparent in terms of age, the N/L ratio, MPV, white blood cell count (WBC), red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet, neutrophil, lymphocyte, red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and platelet crit (PCT) levels (p>0.05). Only the level of platelet distribution width (PDW) significantly differed, being lower in the papillary cancer group (p<0.05). Conclusions: No significant relationship between papillary thyroid cancer and inflammatory hematological parameters including in particular the N/L ratio and MPV. The relevance of the PDW values remains unclear.

      • Serum Soluble Urokinase Plasminogen Activator Receptor Levels in Chronic Hepatitis B and C Patients and Relationship with Clinical Parameters

( Ali Pekcan Demiröz ),( Reyhan Öztürk ),( Şener Barut ),( Salih Cesur ),( Semanur Ayyıldız ),( Vildan Fidancı ),( Osman Demir ),( Ferdi Güneş ),( Laser Şanal ) 대한간학회 2017 춘·추계 학술대회 (KASL) Vol.2017 No.1

Aims: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and C (CHC) are leading causes of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular cancer. Defining of inflammatory activity and severity of disease is important for commencing antiviral treatment and monitoring the patient. Currently noninvasive serological markers to define disease activity are of great interest. In this study we aimed to determine soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) levels of patients with CHB and CHC, compare its levels with those of controls and to find if suPAR levels correlated with some laboratory parameters, histologic activity index (HAI) and fibrosis stage. Methods: Twenty-eight patients with CHB, 11 patients with CHC and 41 healthy subjects, eighty subjects in total, were included in the study. suPAR levels of all subjects were determined using commercial ELISA kits according to manufacturer’s instructions. Correlation between suPAR levels and parameters including AST, ALT, leukocyte count, thrombocyte count and liver histology scores were statistically analyzed. Results: Fifty percent of CHB patients were on oral antiviral treatment. Serum suPAR levels of both CHB and CHC patients were higher than controls (p< 0,001). Age, suPAR, HAI, AST, ALT, leukocyte and thrombocyte counts of subjects in different groups (CHB, CHC patients and controls) were shown in table 1. When we divided patients into two groups according to HBV DNA, suPAR levels were not different between patients with HBV DNA >1000 IU/ml and those with HBV DNA<1000 IU/ml. suPAR levels were not found to be correlated with AST, ALT levels, thrombocyte and leukocyte counts or histologic findings. Conclusions: In both CHB and CHC patients, suPAR levels were determined to be higher than healthy controls although suPAR was not found to be correlated with diseae activity or severity related parameters. However new wide scale studies are needed to investigate the relation between suPAR and disease activity or fibrosis stage.

      • Spatial distribution of Türkiye’s local Turkish coffee kinds

Demir Yeliz,Bertan Serkan 한국식품연구원 2023 Journal of Ethnic Foods Vol.10 No.33

This research aims to determine the contents, cooking, and serving styles of local Turkish coffee kinds in Türkiye and to reveal their differences from traditional Turkish coffee. In addition, the distribution of local Turkish coffee kinds determined according to cities and regions was determined. Document analysis was applied to determine the features of local Turkish coffee kinds. In the document analysis, local Turkish coffee kinds are divided into three basic categories according to the codes of “coffee content,” “serving style,” “cooking method,” and “difference from traditional Turkish coffee.” Turkish coffee in the first category is prepared without using coffee powder, and local Turkish coffee kinds in the second category differ from traditional Turkish coffee with their features such as the coffee beans are roasted and ground, the presentation of the coffee, the degree of cooking, and the cooking method of the coffee. Different products (local products) are mixed into the coffees in the last local Turkish coffee category. Additionally, local Turkish coffees specific to cities were collected under the “city/region authenticity” code. Black Cumin Coffee, Mırra Coffee, Menengic Coffee, Kenger Coffee, Turkish coffee cooked in a cup, and Dibek Coffee are common local Turkish coffee kinds in some cities and regions.
