Phytoremediation potential of ornamental plants for heavy metal removal from contaminated soil: a critical review

        Deepika,Haritash A. K. 한국원예학회 2023 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.64 No.5

Soil contamination by heavy metals has become a serious environmental issue considering its eff ects on health and the environment. Several techniques are being used for the treatment of contaminated soil, but these methods have limitations on account of cost, chemical/energy effi ciency, and application in the fi eld. On the other hand, phytoremediation is a costeff ective, solar energy-driven, and eco-friendly method for heavy metal removal. The present study discusses hyperaccumulating ornamental plants that can remove metal contaminants from the soil without any visible phytotoxic symptoms. Besides the uptake and translocation, the specifi c metal accumulation potential of ornamental plants, the mechanism involved in the removal, and the growth response of hyperaccumulators towards metal exposure have also been discussed. The essential indices- bioconcentration factor and translocation factor to determine the suitability of plants towards phytoextraction, the role of diff erent plant parts in translocation and biochemical mechanisms for detoxifi cation of metals have been presented as a highlight of this study. For optimum removal and effi cient management of a phytoremediation design, the role of controlling factors such as soil characteristics, type of metal, plant species, organic amendments, phytochelators, bio-inoculants, etc. is very important. Considering the advent of biotechnology, the use of genetically modifi ed plants is also recommended for signifi cantly improved effi ciency. It is expected that the present study will provide a guiding path for future researchers in exploring the scope of phytoremediation using ornamental plants.

Globally Robust Adaptive Critic Based Neuro-Integral Terminal Sliding Mode Technique with UDE for Nonlinear Systems

Deepika Deepika,Shiv Narayan,Sandeep Kaur 한국정밀공학회 2020 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.21 No.3

This paper presents an innovative neural network based optimal integral terminal sliding mode control framework for stabilization of an uncertain affine class of nonlinear systems. In literature, an uncertainty and disturbance estimator (UDE) has been successfully integrated with sliding mode control to diminish the influence of unknown system uncertainties through a low pass filter. However, this estimator causes an initial control signal to shoot up to a very large value which may undesirably affect the functioning of the connected actuators and sensing devices. To this end, this paper utilizes a single network continuous adaptive critic optimal technique which would significantly reduce the initial large control magnitude generated by UDE technique. To ensure the global robustness, an exponential bilateral decay function is employed in the proposed control law. Moreover, the excellent approximation characteristic of radial basis feed-forward neural network is also exploited to estimate the partial non-linear dynamics. The closed loop stability is also guaranteed with the proposed technique through Lyapunov’s principle. Finally, two practical examples are simulated to state the efficacy of the proposed method and comparison with the prior methods is also provided in the presented work.

Dentofacial and Cranial Changes in Down Syndrome

        Deepika Shukla,Deepika Bablani,Aman Chowdhry,Raveena Thapar,Puneet Gupta,Shashwat Mishra 질병관리본부 2014 Osong Public Health and Research Persptectives Vol.5 No.6

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of certain oral characteristics usually associated with Down syndrome and to determine the oral health status of these patients. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted among patients attending a special education program at Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi, India. The study design consisted of closed-ended questions on demographic characteristics (age, sex, and education and income of parents), dietary habits, and oral hygiene habits. Clinical examination included assessment of oral hygiene according to Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S), dental caries according to decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index, periodontal status according to the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN), and malocclusion according to Angles classification of malocclusion. Examinations were carried out using a using a CPI probe and a mouth mirror in accordance with World Health Organization criteria and methods. Craniometric measurements, including maximum head length and head breadth were measured for each participant using Martin spreading calipers centered on standard anthropological methods. Results: The majority of the patients were males (n = 63; 82%) with age ranging from 6e40 years. The Intelligence Quotient (IQ) score of the patients indicated that 31% had moderate mental disability and 52% had mild mental disability. 22% exhibited hearing and speech problems.12% had missing teeth and 15% had retained deciduous teeth in adult population. The overall prevalence of dental caries in the study population was 78%. DMFT, CPITN and OHI scores of the study group were 3.8 ± 2.52, 2.10 ± 1.14 and 1.92 ± 0.63 respectively. The vast majority of patients required treatment (90%), primarily of scaling, root planing, and oral hygiene education. 16% of patients reported CPITN scores of 4 (deep pockets) requiring complex periodontal care. The prevalence of malocclusion was 97% predominantly of Class III malocclusions. Further 14% presented with fractured anterior teeth primarily central incisor. The percentage means of cephalic index was 84.6% in the study population. The brachycephalic and hyperbrachycephalic type of head shape was dominant in the Down syndrome individuals (90%). Conclusion: The most common dentofacial anomaly seen in these individuals was fissured tongue followed by macroglossia.

      • Scrutinize Study on Face Recognition by Pose Invariant Methodology

Deepika Dubey,G.S Tomar,Hye-jin Kim 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Future Generation Communi Vol.9 No.9

Three-dimensional (3D) face models can handle large pose face recognition problem. In this paper, we propose survey on pose-invariant face recognition method. By scrutinizing study depth, here we only analysis on pose invariant technique in face recognition method is able to handle self-occlusion and deformation, both of which are challenging problems in two-dimensional (2D) face recognition. Texture images of the face in the database can be the same view as the probe during surveillance. In this survey of face detection technology has been presented in this work feature based approach with low level analysis has been done. Information, color, shape, model etc. has been considered for investigation. The technique considered here also explained in other papers. Depth information has improved the performance of face recognition with large pose variations up to the mark able angle and under even more challenging conditions.

RP-HPLC method development using analytical QbD approach for estimation of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside in natural biopolymer based microcapsules and tablet dosage form

        Deepika Thakur,Ashay Jain,Gargi Ghoshal,U. S. Shivhare,O. P. Katare 한국약제학회 2017 Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation Vol.47 No.5

Anthocyanin has been proven to impart several health benefits and biological functions. Though, various analytical methods have been reported for single/multicomponent analysis of anthocyanins, found to be tedious, time consuming and difficult to reproduce. Analytical studies on specific anthocyanins for estimation using an approach of Analytical Quality by Design are scarce. USP method is only reliable for cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (CY-3- O-Glu) estimation, but exploring many disadvantage of having high buffer concentration in mobile phase system and gradient elution, hence column blockage. So there is need to develop a novel HPLC method to overcome this problem with the use organic solvents with lesser volume of buffer in isocratic mode of elution. The aim is to develop a robust and precise method for estimation of CY-3-O-Glu in biopolymer based microcapsules and tablets. The optimized method consisted of mobile phase containing solvent A and B, flow rate 0.8 mL/min with 20 min of analysis time. The method was further validated in accordance with current ICH guidelines Q2 (R1) and found to be highly selective for component in the presence of degradation products confirmed by Mass spectra. Therefore, the proposed method was found to be suitable for routine analysis of CY-3-O-Glu in food and pharmaceutical based formulations.
