Editing Between the Lines: The Collaborative Writing Process of Two Scholars from Disparate Cultures
Deborah Gilman(Deborah Gilman ),Yongsock Chang(Yongsock Chang) 아시아질적탐구학회 2022 아시아질적탐구 Vol.1 No.2
Collaborative writing and language learning efforts between two graduate students, one a South Korean art educator and the other a retired ESL(English as a Second Language) teacher from the United States, are explored in this autoethnographic and ethnodrama collaborative piece. The authors give candid accounts of their experiences with understanding one another’s perspectives, sharing beliefs and cultural differences, developing respect for each other, and discovering friendship as they worked together in editing and revising Korean ideas into the Americanized English of academia. The tie that binds their collaborative efforts is the authors’ advocacy for social justice education.
A Different Approach to Feminism : Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s Rhetoric
Vol.- No.40
This paper analyses Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s work from a feminist rhetoric perspective, through the two main approaches of feminist rhetoric as laid out by Karlyn Kohrs Campbell and Barbara Biesecker. The former, in a humanistic approach, argues that more opportunities for women to speak publicly would enable them to gain rhetorical agency, whereas the latter, in a deconstructionist approach, argues that a shift in social power relations is necessary. This paper then uses two of Justice Ginsburg’s legal cases to position her rhetoric in the middle of this debate and explores in how far it conforms to or deviates from Campbell’s and Biesecker’s ideas. It demonstrates how Ruth Bader Ginsburg created both opportunities for women to speak publicly, as well as contribute to the change of certain social power relations, finding a middle way that was appropriate for her time and situation. Through the analysis of the Frontiero v Richardson case, the results and potential limitations she was facing in this unique approach are explored and brief attention is given to the impact her work has had on the legal system in the United States.
The Rise and Fall of the US-China Health Relationship
2021 ASIAN PERSPECTIVE Vol.Special No.-
US-China health cooperation reaches back to the signing of the bilateral Science and Technology Umbrella Agreement, their first agreement after normalization of diplomatic relations in 1979. Bilateral cooperation has shaped the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) and produced some of the world’s finest epidemiological research over the last thirty years. US-China research and technical cooperation has covered the full range of health-related topics, with no area given more attention than research and technical cooperation on emerging infectious diseases. In the wake of the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the United States ramped up the staff presence of its Center for Disease Control (CDC) in China. Although this changed in the Obama years, as China’s epidemiological capacity developed rapidly, the dramatic shift occurred with the Trump administration, whose cuts, just as COVID-19 arose as the largest epidemiological threat to the world in a century, left only a skeleton staff in place, and the US government without eyes and ears on the ground. Nonetheless, there is a reservoir of mutual respect and willingness to cooperate among the health professionalss in both countries. If there is political will, this could become the foundation for a next-phase bilateral health relationship.
