The Relationship Between Young EFL Learners’ Vocabulary Knowledge and Listening Comprehension

This study investigates the degree to which an elementary school EFL learner’s level of second language (L2) vocabulary correlates to their L2 listening ability. The study aims to further identify whether or to what extent various measures of vocabulary knowledge predict the variance in L2 listening comprehension. In particular, the study focuses on the relatively unexplored area of phonological knowledge of vocabulary. Three phonological measures which tap into both vocabulary breadth and depth knowledge were adopted in this study: the receptive phonological vocabulary breadth knowledge (RVB), productive phonological vocabulary breadth knowledge (PVB), and phonological vocabulary depth knowledge (VD) measures. Twenty elementary school EFL learners participated in the study and were required to complete an L2 listening comprehension test, followed by three vocabulary knowledge tests. Correlation analysis revealed that RVB most strongly correlated with L2 listening comprehension score (r = .77). Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that the best fitting model which consists of RVB and VD could predict about 75% of the variance in L2 listening comprehension. The findings indicate that phonological vocabulary knowledge is a significant predictor of L2 listening ability of young EFL learners.

<P>In this study, we developed a two-photon fluorescent probe for detection of peroxynitrite (ONOO<SUP>-</SUP>) near the <I>N</I>-methyl-<SMALL>D</SMALL>-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. This naphthalimide-based probe contains a boronic acid reactive group and an ifenprodil-like tail, which serves as an NMDA receptor targeting unit. The probe displays high sensitivity and selectivity, along with a fast response time in aqueous solution. More importantly, the probe can be employed along with two-photon fluorescence microscopy to detect endogenous ONOO<SUP>-</SUP> near NMDA receptors in neuronal cells as well as in hippocampal tissues. The results suggest that the probe has the potential of serving as a useful imaging tool for studying ONOO<SUP>-</SUP> related diseases in the nervous system.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Objective: The ARTISENTIAL instruments aim at bringing advanced articulation to laparoscopy to overcome challenges in narrow anatomical spaces. We present the first single-center results of a series of single-port laparoscopic hysterectomies performed with ARTISENTIAL. Methods: Between September 2021 and August 2022, 34 patients who underwent single-port laparoscopic hysterectomy using ARTISENTIAL needle holder for benign or malignant disease by a single surgeon were enrolled retrospectively. The ARTISENTIAL needle holder was used only for vaginal vault closure. The handle of ARTISENTIAL was placed left to the camera head and held with the surgeon's right hand. A conventional grasper was placed right to the camera head and held with the surgeon's left hand. The two devices were crossed in peritoneal space (reverse hand grip technique). All suturing process was videotaped to measure vaginal vault closure time and technique. Perioperative and short-term postoperative data were analyzed. Results: The patients had a median age of 48 years (range 35-75 years). The median time of the vault suture was 411 seconds (range 156-1083 sec), and the median total operative time was 92 min (range 60-160 min). There was one case of vaginal vault dehiscence and two cases of vaginal vault hematoma. The median suture time for the Initial 10 cases and the last 10 cases were 900 sec (range 576 ~ 1083) and 364 sec (range 156 ~ 470 sec), respectively (p <0.001). After 5 cases of the initial experience, the suture times did not exceed 10 minutes in any patient. Conclusion: Intracorporeal vaginal vault closure with ARTISENTIAL needle holder in single-port hysterectomy is feasible and safe. All patients had a successful surgical outcome. The Cumbersomeness of the handle of ARTISENTIAL can be solved using the reverse hand grip technique, which confers more suitable ergonomics to the surgeon. We will now seek to evaluate the benefits of ARTISENTIAL in comparison with standard laparoscopic instruments through a larger study.
Investigation of tar colors use and microbial contamination of desserts at resting resturants

Usable tar colors 9 types (tartrazine, sunset yellow FCF, brilliant blue FCF, indigo carmine, Ponceau 4R, amaranth red 2, erythrosine, allura red and fast green FCF), bacterial counts and the coliforms were tested for 60 snacks and chocolates, 7 breads, and 41 beverages consumed at resting restaurant in Gyeongsangbuk-do. Tar colors was not detected in chocolates and breads. 6 types of tar colors were detected at a concentration of 0.26-1213.06 mg/kg in 47 snacks and 3 types of tar colors were detected at a concentration of 0.56-167.23 mg/kg in 6 beverages. Tar color detected at the highest concentrations were all allura red. In addition, there were 40 samples in which two or more tar colors were mixed, and a maximum of 1853.74 mg/kg was detected. On the other hand, bacterial counts was detected in 85 samples and the coliforms was detected in 20 samples. In snacks and chocolates, bacterial counts 1-80,000,000 cfu/g, and coliforms 10-140 cfu/g. In breads, bacterial counts 11-900 cfu/g, and coliforms 140 cfu/g. In beverages, bacterial counts 1-12,000 cfu/g and coliforms 5-820 cfu/g.
Identifying the needs and wishes of generation Z regarding clothing maintenance

Despite the huge success of LG Styler on the local and global market, it seems to target housewives in their 40s, instead of people in their 20-30s who are the main consumers of the clothing industry and consequently have more interest in clothing management and maintenance. Therefore, this study aims to understand the needs and wishes of the older representatives of generation Z regarding clothing care as well as the reasons behind the low demand for stylers among them. To meet this goal, we surveyed generation Z representatives and received 80 responses, conducted 6 extreme user interviews along with collage making, and analyzed gathered data with the use of affinity diagrams. Based on this, we developed criteria and directions for the further work of redesigning LG Styler (S3MFC) to meet the needs of generation Z, the population group that is most interested in clothing care.
Regulating host-microbe interactions by glycomic landscaping

Cell surface glycans lie at the interface between the cell and its environment, playing an active role in mediating interactions with foreign substances. Although current lectin-based methods enable detection of select glycan epitopes present on the cell surface, detailed structural information of glycan heterogeneity is needed to better assess their involvement in cell-cell interactions, particularly with pathogens. Mass spectrometry-based glycomics has the potential to provide a single platform to monitor hundreds of native structures simultaneously. This study constitutes a comprehensive and quantitative analysis that defines the sequence of oligosaccharides on human cells that affect the nature of Salmonella Typhimurium infection. We first examined the glycan products remaining on the host cell surface after brief contact with bacteria, which included mainly, desialylated and high mannose glycans. We then describe a glycomic landscaping (glycoscaping) strategy to present predominantly high mannose glycans on host cells to better correlate phenotype with structure. A better understanding of the biological roles of glycosylation is achieved by structure-specific re-engineering towards specified glycosylation patterns. Changes in the glycan landscape were induced on live cells, using a mixture of glycosidases and glycosidase inhibitors. Following treatment, the exact changes were characterized by mass spectrometry. Such glycoscaping, when applied to intestinal epithelial cells, yielded significant increases in membrane enzyme activity, cell permeability, migration, and microbial infection.
