Forensic Imaging for Causal Investigation of Death

A 63-year-old man was found in the street after overrun by a car. Postmortem CT revealed multiple bone fractures, but surprisingly all without any relevant hemorrhage which would have been expected under such circumstances. A round radiopaque formation was found in the duodenum, which was reminiscent of ingested tablets. The toxicological analysisrevealed high concentrations of zopiclone and alcohol. By combining radiologic and forensic results, zopiclone and alcohol intoxication were concluded as the cause of death, followed by a postmortem overrun accident.
Chinese Football – From a State-Led Past to a Digital Future

Following the 2014 announcement of Xi Jingping’s vision for China to create a domestic sport economy worth $800+ million by 2025, discussion has arisen around how this might be achieved, who the key players in this industry are, and what the broader geo-politic effects might be for China, and the rest of the World. Of particular focus has been the investment and efforts levied specifically toward football. This special issue brings together a selection of the more recent empirical and conceptual studies concerned with China and football. This initial paper is presented as a contextual precursor to the five papers representing our special issue. Collectively, these papers draw on a variety of methodologies, and consider debates around China and football from micro, meso and more macro perspectives. We believe the research presented in this issue provides a rich and diverse source of learning for researchers and practitioners interested in the nature and effect of China’s footballing vision.
The BASF Laser Optical Pitch Particle Counter - Current Applications and Future Developments

The occurrence of detrimental substances in the paper machine leads to reduced economic performance of paper mills through reduced capacities due to increased paper breaks and cleaning times. In this article the latest generation of BASF’s laser optical pitch particle counter is employed in the examination of a paper mill operating two paper machines and using a mixture of thermo-mechanical pulp and recycled fibres. The potential of the new instrument to differentiate between particles on the basis of size and chemical composition is discussed. In addition, direct evidence of the periodic and locational variation of detrimental substances in the paper machine is given. Finally, an example of the application of BASF’s laser optical pitch particle counter in the selection of a suitable fixative system for a complex furnish is presented.
Anterior Bone Loss in Cervical Disc Arthroplasty

Study Design: Retrospective, longitudinal observational study. Purpose: To describe the natural history of anterior bone loss (ABL) in cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) and introduce a classification system for its assessment. Overview of Literature: ABL has recently been recognized as a complication of CDA, but its cause and clinical effects remain unknown. Methods: Patients with non-keeled CDA (146) were retrospectively reviewed. X-rays were examined at 6 weeks, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months, and annually thereafter for a minimum of 5 years. These were compared with the initial postoperative X-rays to determine the ABL. Visual Analog Scale pain scores were recorded at 3 months and 5 years. Neck Disability Index was recorded at postoperative 5 years. The natural history was determined and a classification system was introduced. Results: Complete radiological assessment was available for 114 patients with 156 cervical disc replacements (CDRs) and 309 endplates (average age, 45.3 years; minimum, 28 years; maximum, 65 years; 57% females). ABL occurred in 57.1% of CDRs (45.5% mild, 8.3% moderate, and 3.2% severe) and commenced within 3 months of the operation and followed a benign course, with improvement in the bone stock after initial bone resorption. There was no relationship between ABL degree and pain or functional outcome, and no implants were revised. Conclusions: ABL is common (57.1%). It occurs at an early stage (within 3 months) and typically follows a non-progressive natural history with stable radiographic features after the first year. Most ABL cases are mild, but severe ABL occurs in approximately 3% of CDAs. ABL does not affect the patients’ clinical outcome or the requirement for revision surgery. Surgeons should thus treat patients undergoing CDA considering ABL.
