β - Casein 의 이차구조에 관한 chaotropic Salts 의 영향

        송경빈,Srinivasan Damodaran ( Kyung Bin Song,Srinivasan Damodaran ) 생화학분자생물학회 1992 BMB Reports Vol.25 No.5

To elucidate the effect of chaotropic salts on the conformation of β-casein, CD studies of β-casein at various NaC1O₄ concentrations were performed. Addition of NaC1O₄ up to 1 M caused the increase of β-sheet content from 15 to 35% due to alteration of water structure. Reversibility experiments indicate that increased secondary structure of β-casein in the presence of chaotropic salt might be a form of non-classic sheet-like structure.

      • Effect of Fungicide Seed Dress on the Introduced Microbial Population and Plant Health in Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Puthanveettil Narayanankutty Damodaran 계명대학교 자연과학연구소 2013 Quantitative Bio-Science Vol.32 No.2

Experiments were carried out to study the effect of fungicide seed dress on Fusarium wilt, introduced microflora and associate plant and soil characteristics in the cotton cultivar LRA 5166. Commercially available Carbendazim, which is a systemic broad spectrum fungicide, used against Fusarium wilt was used as the seed dress. Trichoderma spp. And arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) species were used as introduced biocontrol agents. Disease severity was assessed by manual evaluation. Plant responses were measured in terms of tissue Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, tissue dry weights and biochemical studies. Soil quality was assessed by measuring available Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium and organic carbon content in the soil. Plants inoculated with AMF and Trichoderma with fungicide application reduced the disease severity and reduced the damage of soil quality due to the application of fungicide. Soil microbial activity was reinstated by the application of AMF and biocontrol agents along with the fungicides. Inoculation of cotton plants with a combination of AMF and Trichoderma along with fungicide application was found to improve soil quality, rather than the application of fungicide alone. The experiment shows that the detrimental effects of the fungicides can be nullified by the application of selective microflora into the soil.

Bio-inspired strategies for designing antifouling biomaterials

        Vinod B. Damodaran,N. Sanjeeva Murthy 한국생체재료학회 2016 생체재료학회지 Vol.20 No.3

Contamination of biomedical devices in a biological medium, biofouling, is a major cause of infection and is entirely avoidable. This mini-review will coherently present the broad range of antifouling strategies, germicidal, preventive and cleaning using one or more of biological, chemical and physical techniques. These techniques will be discussed from the point of view of their ability to inhibit protein adsorption, usually the first step that eventually leads to fouling. Many of these approaches draw their inspiration from nature, such as emulating the nitric oxide production in endothelium, use of peptoids that mimic protein repellant peptides, zwitterionic functionalities found in membrane structures, and catechol functionalities used by mussel to immobilize poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). More intriguing are the physical modifications, creation of micropatterns on the surface to control the hydration layer, making them either superhydrophobic or superhydrophilic. This has led to technologies that emulate the texture of shark skin, and the superhyprophobicity of self-cleaning textures found in lotus leaves. The mechanism of antifouling in each of these methods is described, and implementation of these ideas is illustrated with examples in a way that could be adapted to prevent infection in medical devices.

      • Effect of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi and Trichoderma on Plant Health and Disease Suppression in Cotton

        Sowndhararajan Kandhasamy,Damodaran, Puthanveettil Naray 계명대학교 자연과학연구소 2015 Quantitative Bio-Science Vol.34 No.1

The experiments were carried out to study the effect of AMF and biocontrol agents on improving plant health and suppressing plant diseases in cotton cultivar, MCU-5-VT. Inoculation of both AMF and Trichoderma reduced disease severity. Biochemical concentrations in plant tissues were significantly influenced by AMF and biocontrol agent inoculation. Higher biochemical concentrations with maximum accumulation of proteins, amino acids and phenols were observed in plants inoculated with the tested microorganisms. Defense related enzyme activity, peroxidase and phenyl alanine ammonia-lyase, increased with inoculation of both AMF and the pathogen. Generally enzyme activities reached their maximum at early stages of plant growth and were reduced subsequently. Soil microbial activity, measured in terms of soil respiration rate and dehydrogenase activity, increased significantly in inoculated soils.

An update of the Malaysian Clinical Guidance on the management of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis, 2015

        Swan Sim Yeap,Fen Lee Hew,Premitha Damodaran,Winnie Chee,Joon Kiong Lee,Emily Man Lee Goh,Siew Pheng Chan 대한골다공증학회 2017 Osteoporosis and Sarcopenia Vol.3 No.1

Objectives: This Clinical Guidance is aimed to help practitioners assess, diagnose and manage their patients with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIO), using the best available evidence. Methods: A literature search using PubMed (MEDLINE) and The Cochrane Library identified all relevant articles on GIO and its assessment, diagnosis and treatment, from 2011, to update from the 2012 edition. The studies were assessed and the level of evidence assigned. For each statement, studies with the highest level of evidence were used to frame the recommendation. Results: Consider treatment early in all patients on glucocorticoids (GC) as fracture risk increases within 3e6 months of starting GC. The decision to start treatment for GIO depends on the presence of prior fracture, category of risk (as calculated using Fracture Risk Assessment Tool), daily dose and duration of GC treatment, age, and menopausal status. General measures include adequate calcium and vitamin D intake and reducing the dose of GC to the minimum required to achieve disease control. In patients on GC with osteoporotic fractures or confirmed osteoporosis on dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, bisphosphonates are the first-line treatment. Treatment should be continued as long as patients remain on GC. Algorithms for the management of GIO in both pre- and post-menopausal women and men have been updated. Conclusions: In post-menopausal women and men above 50 years, bisphosphonates remain the mainstay of treatment in GIO. In pre-menopausal women and men below 50 years, bisphosphonates are recommended for those with a prevalent fracture or at very high risk only.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA detection in uterine cervix cancer after radiation indicating recurrence: a systematic review and meta-analysis

        Sasidharanpillai Sabeena,Santhosh Kuriakose,Binesh Damodaran,Nagaraja Ravishankar,Govindakarnavar Arunkumar 대한부인종양학회 2020 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.31 No.2

Objective: The causal association of human papillomavirus (HPV) in uterine cervical cancer was well established and this oncogenic virus was reported to be a biomarker for overall recurrence and central pelvic recurrence. The objective of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the role of HPV DNA testing in early detection of recurrence among cervical cancer survivors after radiotherapy. Methods: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis by means of searching electronic databases for published articles between January 1984 and June 2018, on the basis of standard systematic review guidelines prescribed by major agencies namely Cochrane Collaboration (https://www.cochrane.org) and Campbell Collaboration (https://www.campbellcollaboration.org). The meta-analysis component was further modified appropriately for the synthesis of sensitivity and specificity results. Results: A total of 1,055 cervical cancer cases who had received pelvic radiation with or without chemotherapy from ten cohort studies were evaluated. The overall pooled sensitivity and specificity of HPV DNA testing was 0.84 (95% confidence interval [CI]= 0.66–0.94) and 0.35 (95% CI=0.20–0.54) respectively. The positive likelihood ratio was 1.3 (95% CI=1.0–1.7) and the negative likelihood ratio was 0.45 (95% CI=0.18–1.10) with an estimated diagnostic odds ratio of 3 (95% CI=1–9). Conclusion: The screening for HPV DNA testing during follow-up facilitates early detection of recurrence after radiotherapy.

      • A summary of the Malaysian Clinical Guidance on the management of postmenopausal and male osteoporosis, 2015

        Swan Sim Yeap,Fen Lee Hew,Premitha Damodaran,Winnie Chee,Joon Kiong Lee,Emily Man Lee Goh,Malik Mumtaz,Heng Hing Lim,Siew Pheng Chan 대한골다공증학회 2016 Osteoporosis and Sarcopenia Vol.2 No.1

Aim: This Clinical Guidance is aimed to help practitioners assess, diagnose and manage their patients with osteoporosis (OP), using the best available evidence. Methods: A literature search using PubMed (MEDLINE) and The Cochrane Library identified all relevant articles on OP and its assessment, diagnosis and treatment, from 2011, to update from the 2012 edition. The studies were assessed and the level of evidence assigned. For each statement, studies with the highest level of evidence were used to frame the recommendation. Results: This article summarizes the diagnostic and treatment pathways for postmenopausal and male OP, while addressing the risk-benefit ratio for OP treatment. Recognising the limitation of only depending on bone mineral density in assessing fracture risk, a move to assess 10 year fracture risk using tools such as FRAX, is recommended as a guide to decision-making on when to start treatment. A re-evaluation was done of the position of calcium supplementation and on the importance of vitamin D. There has been concern about the potential adverse effects of the long-term usage of bisphosphonates, which have been discussed fully. Algorithms for the management of postmenopausal and male OP have been updated. Conclusions: Adequate intake of calcium (1000 mg from both diet and supplements) and vitamin D (800 IU) daily remain important adjuncts in the treatment of OP. However, in confirmed OP, pharmacological therapy with anti-resorptives is the mainstay of treatment in both men and postmenopausal women. Patients need to be regularly assessed while on medication and treatment adjusted as appropriate. © 2016 The Korean Society of Osteoporosis. Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.
