        Occupational Rhinoconjunctivitis due to Maize in a Snack Processor: A Cross-Reactivity Study Between Lipid Transfer Proteins From Different Cereals and Peach

        We report the case of a snack processor who developed occupational rhinoconjunctivitis due to maize brand exposure during the extrusion process,and who experienced abdominal pain upon drinking beer. The allergens implicated and the cross-reactivity between non-specific lipid transfer proteins(LTPs) from different cereals and peach were investigated. Skin prick tests and specific IgE to cereal flours, pulmonary functions tests and specificconjunctival and inhalation challenges to maize extract were performed. In vitro studies included IgE immunoblotting and ELISA inhibition assays. Skin prick tests with maize flour, maize brand and wheat flour extracts were positive, whereas serum specific IgE was positive only to maize flour. Specificinhalation challenge (SIC) to maize flour did not elicit an asthmatic reaction; however, conjunctival challenge test with the same extract was positive. Patient’s serum recognized IgE-binding bands in the maize and beer extracts corresponding to LTPs. In the ELISA inhibition assays, a significantdegree of allergenic cross-reactivity was found between maize and beer LTPs, whereas no cross-reactivity was observed between maize LTP andwheat and peach LTPs.

        Convoquer la mémétique en sciences de l’information et de la communication: Propositions pour une collaboration disciplinaire

        This study addresses memetique’s potential to open new directions in information and communication sciences. If there is one thing that digital media faithfully reveal, it is their «itérabilité» (Derrida), that is their capacity to tirelessly duplicate themselves, in their supports as in their content. In order to go beyond the simple observation and to understand the depth of this mimetic machine, we will use the cultural transmission tools at the center of memetique: memes. Pending an excessive or erroneous use (the Internet meme), this collaboration can reveal exclusive epistemological means for an analysis of two founding processes, copy and transmission, and their contiguous connections. On the organizational model that suggest some mediatic content (preventive campaigns), we argue the emerging of an «Informème»: an elementary unit that circulates in between electronic apparatus and that incorporates and spreads an information unit, while reproducing it indefinitely. L’étude interroge les possibilités d’exploration que la mémétique pourraient ouvrir en sciences de l’information et de la communication. S’il est une chose que les médias informatisés nous révèlent avec une constance immuable, c’est leur «itérabilité» (Derrida), c’est-à-dire leur capacité à se répéter, inlassablement, à se répliquer, dans leurs supports comme dans leurs contenus. Pour aller au-delà du constat et pour comprendre la force qui entraîne les rouages de cette machine mimétique, nous proposons de convoquer les outils d’analyse de la transmission culturelle que défend la mémétique : les mèmes. A la condition d’éviter tout emploi excessif ou erroné (le mème internet), cette collaboration peut révéler des ressorts épistémologiques inédits pour l’analyse de deux processus fondateurs, la copie et la transmission, et de leurs relations contiguës. Sur le modèle d’organisation suggéré par certains contenus médiatiques (les campagnes de prévention), nous postulons l’émergence d’un «Informème» : unité de sens élémentaire circulant entre les dispositifs électroniques, il incorpore et propage une unité informative, cependant qu’il la reproduit indéfiniment.

        The Epigenetics of Triple-Negative and Basal-Like Breast Cancer: Current Knowledge

        Breast cancer has the highest incidence among all malignancies diagnosed in women. Therapies have significantly improved over the years due to extensive molecular and clinical research; in a large number of cases, targeted therapies have provided better prognosis. However, one specific subtype remains elusive to targeted therapies—the triple-negative breast cancer. This immunohistochemically defined subtype is resistant to both endocrine and targeted therapies, leading to its poor prognosis. A field that is of great promise in current cancer research is epigenetics. By studying the epigenetic mechanisms underlying tumorigenesis— DNA methylation, histone modifications, and noncoding RNAs— advances in cancer treatment, diagnosis, and prevention are possible. This review aims to synthesize the epigenetic discoveries that have been made related to the triple-negative breast cancer.

        Effects of Acupuncture at the Yintang and the Chengjiang Acupoints on Cardiac Arrhythmias and Neurocardiogenic Syncope in Emergency First Aid

        This study evaluated the effectiveness of YinTang and ChengJiang acupoints on patients with cardiac arrhythmia and neurocardiogenic syncope in emergency first aid. A 45 year old woman underwent acupuncture. She had a previous history of a valvuloplasty for rheumatic disease and two acute myocardial infarctions, followed by four catheterizations and an angioplasty. Needling of the YinTang acupoint and stimulation of the ChengJiang acupoint through acupressure were performed for 20 minutes soon after syncope and during tachycardia, hypertension, tachypnea, and precordial pain, without any effect on peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) or the glycemic index. Data were analyzed comparatively by using the following parameters at rest, during syncope, and at 1 minute and 10 minutes after an emergency acupuncture procedure: blood pressure; heart rate; SpO2; and respiratory rate. We found that acupuncture at YinTang and ChenJiang acupoints induced cardiovascular responses, increased the limits of the body's homeostasis, and normalized the patient's condition in the case of syncope. Acupuncture using a combination of ChengJiang and YinTang acupoints had an immediate effect on the autonomic nervous system and on maintaining homeostasis and energy balance in the body. Although this technique was effective, the patient was still referred to the Emergency Room.

        Phenolic Content and Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Properties of Fruits of Capsicum baccatum L. var. pendulum at Different Maturity Stages

        The phenolic content, antioxidant potential, and antimicrobial activity of extracts of different parts of the fruitfrom Capsicum baccatumL. var. pendulumwere investigated. The analysis of phenolic content was performed by the Folin-Ciocalteu method and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The in vitroantioxidant activity was assessedby the total reactive antioxidant potential and total antioxidant reactivity index. The antioxidant activity was positively cor-related with the amount of phenolics found in each sample. The ex vivoantioxidant potential was assessed using the rat liverslice model. The antimicrobial activity was screened using Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. All the ex-tracts revealed antioxidant activity and a weak antimicrobial activity.

      • Anti-Inflammatory and Antiatherogenic Role of BMP Receptor II in Endothelial Cells

        <P><B>Objective—</B></P><P>Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease with multiple underlying metabolic and physical risk factors. Bone morphogenic protein 4 (BMP4) expression is increased in endothelium in atherosclerosis-prone regions and is known to induce endothelial inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and hypertension. BMP actions are mediated by 2 different types of BMP receptors (BMPRI and BMPRII). Here, we show a surprising finding that loss of BMPRII expression causes endothelial inflammation and atherosclerosis.</P><P><B>Approach and Results—</B></P><P>Using BMPRII siRNA and BMPRII<SUP>+/−</SUP> mice, we found that specific knockdown of BMPRII, but not other BMP receptors (Alk1, Alk2, Alk3, Alk6, ActRIIa, and ActRIIb), induced endothelial inflammation in a ligand-independent manner by mechanisms mediated by reactive oxygen species, nuclear factor-KappaB, and reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidases. Further, BMPRII<SUP>+/−</SUP>ApoE<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice developed accelerated atherosclerosis compared with BMPRII<SUP>+/+</SUP>ApoE<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice. Interestingly, we found that multiple proatherogenic stimuli, such as hypercholesterolemia, disturbed flow, prohypertensive angiotensin II, and the proinflammatory cytokine (tumor necrosis factor-α), downregulated BMPRII expression in endothelium, whereas antiatherogenic stimuli, such as stable flow and statin treatment, upregulated its expression in vivo and in vitro. Moreover, BMPRII expression was significantly diminished in human coronary advanced atherosclerotic lesions. Also, we were able to rescue the endothelial inflammation induced by BMPRII knockdown by overexpressing the BMPRII wild type, but not by the BMPRII short form lacking the carboxyl-terminal tail region.</P><P><B>Conclusions—</B></P><P>These results suggest that BMPRII is a critical, anti-inflammatory, and antiatherogenic protein that is commonly targeted by multiple pro- and antiatherogenic factors. BMPRII may be used as a novel diagnostic and therapeutic target in atherosclerosis.</P>
