Male red-spotted newts, Notophthalmus viridescens, use chemical cues to locate and select potential mates. To investigate whether large and small males respond differentially to chemical cues from conspecifics, we conducted a series of two-choice Y- maze tests with odorant stimuli from two large females (LF/LF), one large versus one small female (LF/SF), and one large female placed with four males versus one small female (LF+4M / SF). We found that males responded more rapidly in a LF/LF choice situation than in those involving LF/SF or LF+4M/SF. In addition, small males chose more quickly than did large males. These results suggest that both body size and odorant context affect the speed of odorant responses. By responding differentially to conspecific chemical cues, small males may arrive earlier at a courting area, increasing their chances of successfully guarding and mating with a female.
Design of Smart Cold Chain Application Framework Based on Hadoop and Spark
Daesik Ko,Yoonsik Kwak,Dojin Choi,Seokil Song 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Software Engineering and Vol.9 No.12
A smart cold chain management is an information system which monitors and maintains the proper temperature of the products during whole cold chain, and analyzes data to report abnormal environmental status and risks to producers and consumers. In this paper, we propose an application framework for smart cold chain management system based on Hadoop, Spark and IoT (Internet of Things) techniques. The proposed application framework for smart cold chain provides PaaS (Platform as a Service) and IaaS (Infra as a Service) so as that smart cold chain management systems can be developed and operated with low cost and in short time. Also, the proposed application framework for smart cold chain allows the heterogeneous IOT devices such as RFID tags, WSN sensor nodes, BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) sensor nodes and so on. We design PaaS and IaaS based on Hadoop and Spark to store the large amount of data stream on salable storage and process stream data in real time to detect events and assess risks in cold chain. Through generalizing the functions of existing cold chain management systems, common components in smart cold chain management systems are drawn.
Simple Design of Detector in the Presence of Frequency Offset for IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPANs
Daesik Park,Sungchung Park, C.,Kwyro Lee IEEE 2009 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON CIRCUITS AND SYSTEMS PART 2 E Vol.56 No.4

A simple detector for orthogonal modulation that is robust to large frequency offsets is proposed. The complexity of the detector is significantly reduced by implementing the correlator using multiplexers instead of complex floating-point multiplications. The performance of this design is comparable to the optimal value obtained by double correlation in offset quadrature phase-shift keying (O-QPSK) and nearly reaches that of noncoherent maximum likelihood (NCOHML) detection with 10-ppm frequency offset in the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Therefore, the proposed design can be used in low-cost and low-power IEEE 802.15.4 low-rate wireless personal area network (LR-WPAN) applications.

Wide-Angle Laser Structured Light System Calibration with a Planar Object
Daesik Kim,Seongsoo Lee,Hyunwoo Kim,Sukhan Lee 제어로봇시스템학회 2010 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2010 No.10
In this paper, we proposed a calibration method for a structured light system composed of a wide-angle line laser and a camera using a planar object. Instead of directly calibrating the camera with a planar object, we separated the radial distortion estimation from the camera calibration step to improve accuracy. Firstly, we corrected the lens radial distortion and then computed the camera’s intrinsic and extrinsic parameters. For line laser calibration, the line laser’s position was extracted from the distorted image. The laser’s sub-pixel position was then calculated using the proposed normalized weighted average method, and forward-mapped to the rectified image. The corresponding 3D point of the extracted laser was estimated by computing the intersecting point of the camera ray and the calibration plane. The experimental results show the superiority of the proposed method.
