Janus-Multi Source Event Detection and Collection System for Effective Surveillance of Criminal Activity

( Cyrus Shahabi ),( Seon Ho Kim ),( Luciano Nocera ),( Giorgos Constantinou ),( Ying Lu ),( Yinghao Cai ),( Gerard Medioni ),( Ramakant Nevatia ),( Farnoush Banaei-kashani ) 한국정보처리학회 2014 Journal of information processing systems Vol.10 No.1

Recent technological advances provide the opportunity to use large amounts of multimedia data from a multitude of sensors with different modalities (e.g., video, text) for the detection and characterization of criminal activity. Their integration can compensate for sensor and modality deficiencies by using data from other available sensors and modalities. However, building such an integrated system at the scale of neighborhood and cities is challenging due to the large amount of data to be considered and the need to ensure a short response time to potential criminal activity. In this paper, we present a system that enables multi-modal data collection at scale and automates the detection of events of interest for the surveillance and reconnaissance of criminal activity. The proposed system showcases novel analytical tools that fuse multimedia data streams to automatically detect and identify specific criminal events and activities. More specifically, the system detects and analyzes series of incidents (an incident is an occurrence or artifact relevant to a criminal activity extracted from a single media stream) in the spatiotemporal domain to extract events (actual instances of criminal events) while cross-referencing multimodal media streams and incidents in time and space to provide a comprehensive view to a human operator while avoiding information overload. We present several case studies that demonstrate how the proposed system can provide law enforcement personnel with forensic and real time tools to identify and track potential criminal activity.

Respiratory epithelial cell lines exposed to anoxia produced inflammatory mediator

        Cyrus M. Shahriary,Terry W. Chin,Eliezer Nussbaum 대한해부학회 2012 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.45 No.4

Human epithelial cell lines were utilized to examine the effects of anoxia on cellular growth and metabolism. Three normal human epithelial cells lines (A549, NHBE, and BEAS-2B) as well as a cystic fibrosis cell line (IB3-1) and its mutation corrected cell line (C38) were grown in the presence and absence of oxygen for varying periods of time. Interleukin-8 (IL-8) levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique. Cellular metabolism and proliferation were assayed by determining mitochondrial oxidative burst activity by tetrazolium compound reduction. The viability of cells was indirectly measured by lactate dehydrogenase release. A549, NHBE, and BEAS-2B cells cultured in the absence of oxygen showed a progressive decrease in metabolic activity and cell proliferation after one to three days. There was a concomitant increase in IL-8 production. Cell lines from cystic fibrosis (CF) patients did not show a similar detrimental effect of anoxia. However, the IL-8 level was significantly increased only in IB3-1 cells exposed to anoxia after two days. Anoxia appears to affect certain airway epithelial cell lines uniquely with decreased cellular proliferation and a concomitant increased production of a cytokine with neutrophilic chemotactic activity. The increased ability of the CF cell line to respond to anoxia with increased secretion of inflammatory cytokines may contribute to the inflammatory damage seen in CF bronchial airway. This study indicates the need to use different cell lines in in vitro studies investigating the role of epithelial cells in airway inflammation and the effects of environmental influences.

Model Determination of Delayed Causes of Analgesics Prescription in the Emergency Ward in Arak, Iran

        Cyrus, Ali,Moghimi, Mehrdad,Jokar, Abolfazle,Rafeie, Mohammad,Moradi, Ali,Ghasemi, Parisa,Shahamat, Hanieh,Kabir, Ali The Korean Pain Society 2014 The Korean Journal of Pain Vol.27 No.2

Background: According to the reports of the World Health Organization 20% of world population suffer from pain and 33% of them suffer to some extent that they cannot live independently. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study which was conducted in the emergency department (ED) of Valiasr Hospital of Arak, Iran, in order to determine the causes of delay in prescription of analgesics and to construct a model for prediction of circumstances that aggravate oligoanalgesia. Data were collected during a period of 7 days. Results: Totally, 952 patients participated in this study. In order to reduce their pain intensity, 392 patients (42%) were treated. Physicians and nurses recorded the intensity of pain for 66.3% and 41.37% of patients, respectively. The mean (SD) of pain intensity according to visual analogue scale (VAS) was 8.7 (1.5) which reached to 4.4 (2.3) thirty minutes after analgesics prescription. Median and mean (SD) of delay time in injection of analgesics after the physician's order were 60.0 and 45.6 (63.35) minutes, respectively. The linear regression model suggested that when the attending physician was male or intern and patient was from rural areas the delay was longer. Conclusions: We propose further studies about analgesics administration based on medical guidelines in the shortest possible time and also to train physicians and nurses about pain assessment methods and analgesic prescription.

Economic Growth and Food Imports: Evidence from Saudi Arabia`

        ( Cyrus A. Ramezani ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 1995 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.10 No.3

Saudi Arabia has experienced rapid economic growth since the 1960s. The sustained income growth, supported primarily by oil revenues, has brought about profound socioeconomic change and has linked Saudi consumers to other affluent nations in the global market place. This study examines the impact of economic growth on consumption patterns and food imports. The Almost Ideal Demand System is used to study the patterns of substitution and corn plementarity in consumption. Monte Carlo sampling is used to generate confidence intervals for the estimated elasticities and conduct policy simulation. The analysis indicates that economic growth combined with food subsidies have resulted in a shift in consumption away from grains (the traditional diet) to meats and dairy products. This rise in demand is driven by high income elasticities for luxury food items and is further fueled by the income effect of subsidized grain prices. The study provides evidence that well-intentioned policies that distort relative prices lead to undesirable outcomes in terms of Increasing demand for food imports and induce shifts in consumption, both with important long run economic implication.

      • Nanoscale Assembly in Biological Systems: From Neuronal Cytoskeletal Proteins to Curvature Stabilizing Lipids

        Safinya, Cyrus R.,Raviv, Uri,Needleman, Daniel J.,Zidovska, Alexandra,Choi, Myung Chul,Ojeda‐,Lopez, Miguel A.,Ewert, Kai K.,Li, Youli,Miller, Herbert P.,Quispe, Joel,Carragher, Bridget,Potter, WILEY‐VCH Verlag 2011 ADVANCED MATERIALS Vol.23 No.20

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The review will describe experiments inspired by the rich variety of bundles and networks of interacting microtubules (MT), neurofilaments, and filamentous‐actin in neurons where the nature of the interactions, structures, and structure‐function correlations remain poorly understood. We describe how three‐dimensional (3D) MT bundles and 2D MT bundles may assemble, in cell free systems in the presence of counter‐ions, revealing structures not predicted by polyelectrolyte theories. Interestingly, experiments reveal that the neuronal protein tau, an abundant MT‐associated‐protein in axons, modulates the MT diameter providing insight for the control of geometric parameters in bio‐ nanotechnology. In another set of experiments we describe lipid‐protein‐nanotubes, and lipid nano‐ tubes and rods, resulting from membrane shape evolution processes involving protein templates and curvature stabilizing lipids. Similar membrane shape changes, occurring in cells for the purpose of specific functions, are induced by interactions between membranes and proteins. The biological materials systems described have applications in bio‐nanotechnology.</P>

      • A Comparison of Western and Eastern Medicine

Loo, Cyrus W. 慶熙大學校 東西醫學硏究所 1986 國際東西醫學硏究論文集 Vol.1986 No.-

The Chinese Yin and Yang symbol of opposites is a duality of opposing forces paradoxically complimentary with each other and when combined, results in equilibrium. Four examples of this principle are illustrated. No less true is that Eastern and Western medicine are also Yin and Yang opposites. The main distinction between Western medicine and acupuncture is that Western medicine repairs structural damage, whether by organism or trauma, whereas acupuncture repairs function by means of restoring to normalcy the flow of electrical body energy responsible for regulating the function of an organ. Numerous case histories reveal the effectiveness of acupuncture, with a few therapeutic details provided.
