Human SIRT3 gene contains an intronic VNTR enhancer. A T > C transition occurring in the second repeat of each VNTR allele implies the presence/absence of a putative GATA binding motif. A partially overlapping AP-1 site, not affected by the transition, was also identified. Aims of the present study were: 1) to verify if GATA and AP-1 sites could bind GATA2 and c-Jun/c-Fos factors, respectively; 2) to investigate whether such sites modulate the enhancer activity of the SIRT3-VNTR alleles. DAPA assay proved that GATA2 and c-Jun/c-Fos factors are able to bind the corresponding sites. Moreover, co-transfection experiments showed that the over-expression of GATA2 and c-Jun/c-Fos factors boosts the VNTR enhancer activity in an allelic-specific way. Furthermore, we established that GATA2 and c-Jun/c-Fos act additively in modulating the SIRT3-VNTR enhancer function. Therefore, GATA2 and AP-1 are functional sites and the T > C transition of the second VNTR repeat affects their activity.

Korea now has a wide range of English speaking instructors, from Korean speakers of English as a Foreign Language, bilingual speakers of Korean and English, English as a Second Language (other than Korean) speakers, to native English speakers. This paper looked at students’ perceptions of learning from two categories of instructors, namely the English speaker teacher (EST): a native English speaker or a non-native English speaker fluent in English and a language other than Korean, and the Korean speaker teacher (KST): a native Korean speaker or a speaker fluent in English and Korean. 465 students, Korean nationals and non-Koreans, learning from these two instructor categories completed an investigative survey and 8 students agreed to participate in semi-structured interviews. Results indicate a strong preference for KST instructors among Korean nationals of both genders, particularly the Korean males, and students who view themselves as having low level English ability. It also indicates EST instructors’ English accent influences students’ preference for KST. Though KST instructors were preferred, their English should not be strongly influenced by Korean and the KST instructors should not make excessive use of Korean during classes. Students wished to improve their English through participation in English classes, but also wished to maintain comfortable instructor-student interaction, with instructors who share not only a cultural background but who understand the tests and challenges Korean students face succeeding in university and post-university life.

This manuscript explored students’ perspectives of course participation assessment, specifically looking at a basic EFL undergraduate conversation course, which requires its instructors to measure course participation, or contribution. This study investigated students’ knowledge of and beliefs regarding course participation grading, or assessment, practices through a survey instrument. Study findings indicated significant correlation between: the need for Participation Assessment Rubric, the need for Strong Disclosure of Participation Assessment Specifics: Value and Objectives, the need to Convey Instructor Expectations and Philosophy for Participation Responsibilities, and Students’ Personality and Individual issues by contingency analysis. Moreover, the study highlighted student opinion regarding participation in terms of contribution to learning, credence in instructor assessment, participation tasks, and openly disclosed assessment by logit regression. Validity was found to have the greatest effect on students’ belief that participation is an essential part of an English conversation course. Implications for the future direction of participation, especially assessment, were also detailed.
