This paper implements an innovative hybrid water treatment process in a flow plant using hydrogenperoxide-based electro-activated persulfate (EPS-H2O2) combined with photoelectro-Fenton (PEF)method. The Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) azo dye was used as a persistent organic pollutant (POP) model. A filter-press reactor utilized a Ti|RuO2 plate and a gas diffusion electrode (GDE) as the anode and cathode. In EPS-H2O2, persulfate (PS) reacts with H2O2 yielding hydroxyl (OH) and sulfate (SO4 ) radicals. InPEF, H2O2 reacts with Fe2+ producing more OH, completing the TOC removal in the presence of UVA light. The influence of pH (3–9), initial PS concentration (0.5–1.5 mM), initial RO16 dye content (30–50 mg L-1TOC), applied current density (j, 5–30 mA cm2), and mean linear flow velocity (u, 7.3–29.1 cm s1) on theEPS-H2O2 process efficiency was examined. The best trial for EPS-H2O2 achieved 37% TOC removal in360 min electrolysis at j = 10 mA cm1, u = 14.6 cm s1, and PGDE = 3 psi. Subsequently, att 360 min, the synergistic effect between the EPS-H2O2 and PEF processes was carried out by adding0.5 mM Fe2+ and UVA light. The best hybrid (EPS-H2O2 + PEF) process test reached 98% mineralizationwith 30% current efficiency and 0.060 kWh (g TOC)-1 electrolytic energy consumption. Six carboxylicacids were determined as the main intermediaries, whereas ammonium was the main nitrogen compoundthroughout the EPS-H2O2 and PEF processes.

Young women still have a lower entrepreneurial inclination (EI) than young men in both a Latin society (Spain) and in a Nordic society (Iceland). Our data come from a survey conducted among university students who attended the Complutense University of Madrid and the University of Iceland. After constructing a set of variables and indicators that served as explanatory variables, and after conducting a statistical and regression analysis, this study provides evidence about the determinants of this gender gap in EI. The EI of male students was more sensitive to having higher self-confidence than in the case of female students. In turn, the EI of female students was more sensitive to both positive (enrichment) and negative (conflict) perspectives about the work–family interface than in the case of males. Additionally, the EI of students was positively related with entrepreneurial family antecedents, and with the level of parental income; and it was negatively related with their tolerance for risk. Some cross-cultural differences were also found between the Spanish and Icelandic samples.

The high internal resistance (Rint) that develops across the sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFC) limits their power production (~4/10 mW m-2) that can be recovered from an initial oil-contaminated sediment (OCS). In the anolyte, Rint is related to poor biodegradation activity, quality and quantity of contaminant content in the sediment and anode material. While on the catholyte, Rint depends on the properties of the catholyte, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and the cathode material. In this work, the main factors limiting the power output of the SMFC have been minimized. The power output of the SMFC was increased (47 times from its initial value, ~4 mW m-2) minimizing the SMFC Rint (28 times from its initial value, 5000 ohms), following the main modifications. Anolyte: the initial OCS was amended with several amounts of gasoline and kerosene. The best anaerobic microbial activity of indigenous populations was better adapted (without more culture media) to 3 g of kerosene. Catholyte: ORR was catalyzed in birnessite/carbon fabric (CF)-cathode at pH 2, 0.8M Na2SO4. At the class level, the main microbial groups (Gammaproteobacteria, Coriobacteriia, Actinobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria) with electroactive members were found at C-anode and were associated with the high-power densities obtained. Gasoline is more difficult to biodegrade than kerosene. However, in both cases, SMFC biodegradation activity and power output are increased when ORR is performed on birnessite/CF in 0.8 M Na2SO4 at pH 2. The work discussed here can focus on bioremediation (in heavy OCS) or energy production in future work.

Hybrid simulation (HS) has attracted community attention in recent years as an efficient and effective experimental technique for structural performance evaluation in size-limited laboratories. Traditional hybrid simulations usually take deterministic properties for their numerical substructures therefore could not account for inherent uncertainties within the engineering structures to provide probabilistic performance assessment. Reliable structural performance evaluation, therefore, calls for stochastic hybrid simulation (SHS) to explicitly account for substructure uncertainties. The experimental design of SHS is explored in this study to account for uncertainties within analytical substructures. Both computational simulation and laboratory experiments are conducted to evaluate the pseudo-random Sobol sequence for the experimental design of SHS. Metamodeling through polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) is established from a computational simulation of a nonlinear singledegree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure to evaluate the influence of nonlinear behavior and ground motions uncertainties. A series of hybrid simulations are further conducted in the laboratory to validate the findings from computational analysis. It is shown that the Sobol sequence provides a good starting point for the experimental design of stochastic hybrid simulation. However, nonlinear structural behavior involving stiffness and strength degradation could significantly increase the number of hybrid simulations to acquire accurate statistical estimation for the structural response of interests. Compared with the statistical moments calculated directly from hybrid simulations in the laboratory, the meta-model through PCE gives more accurate estimation, therefore, providing a more effective way for uncertainty quantification.

The purpose of this research is to explain why airlines should form a strategic alliance (SA). Based on the resource-based view theory, we develop three predictors: firm’s size, number of hubs, and number of destinations, and analyze their effect on alliance formation. We also included two moderator effects based on firm experience: the firm’s codesharing experience besides the alliance, and the firm’s age. We tested our model through a binary logistics regression to assess what resource characteristics of the firm affect the formation of an SA. The data was collected from the top 200 passenger airlines for the year 2012 according to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) classification. The findings suggest that the firm’s size, number of hubs, and number of destinations all have a positive effect on the formation of strategic alliances. However, our moderating variable was just partially supported. This paper offers two theoretical contributions. First, it shows empirically which resource characteristics affect alliance formation in the airline industry. Secondly, it helps to solve the theoretical dilemma that larger firms are more willing to join an SA compared to smaller firms.
