The number of obese youth has increased dramatically in recent decades, yet very little data has assessed how children`s lifestyles have led to this increase in obesity. This study investigated possible factors (media viewing, dietary patterns, and levels of physical activity) contributing to the prevalence in obese Hispanic American children. Twenty-four Hispanic boysaged 6-13 years were recruited. Based on initial body mass index screenings, the subjects were assigned to either a control or obese group (obese > 25% by % fat). Both groups were administered assessments on media viewing, dietary patterns, and levels of physical activity by using a daily log and pedometer. There was no significant difference in media viewing between the obese group and the control group. The total amount of caloric intake in the obese group was not different from that of the control group. However, the percentage of fat calories in the obese group was significantly higher than that of the control group. The average steps per day in the control group were significantly higher than that in the obese group. It was assumed that the dominant determinants in obese Hispanic boysmight be heavily influenced by a high percentage of fat calories consumption and low levels of physical activity, not media viewing and total amount of caloric intake.
Non-leaching and durable antibacterial textiles finished with reactive zwitterionic sulfobetaine
Liang He,Chang Gao,Sha Li,Cordelia T.W. Chung,John H. Xin 한국공업화학회 2017 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.46 No.-
An antibacterialfinishing protocol using a reactive sulfobetaine was reported to fabricate safe anddurable antibacterial textiles. The specifically designed sulfobetaine contains highly reactive triazinegroup acting as an anchor tofix the antibacterial betaine group on textiles via covalent bond formation. After thefinishing, the textiles were endowed durable antibacterial activities of 98.0% against gramnegativeEscherichia coli and 95.2% against gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus even after they werelaundered for 30 times. The safety evaluation showed that the reactive sulfobetaine had no skin irritationand cytotoxicity. These results indicate that the developed antibacterialfinishing is safe and durable ontextiles.
Proposal Flow: Semantic Correspondences from Object Proposals
Ham, Bumsub,Cho, Minsu,Schmid, Cordelia,Ponce, Jean IEEE 2018 IEEE transactions on pattern analysis and machine Vol.40 No.7

Finding image correspondences remains a challenging problem in the presence of intra-class variations and large changes in scene layout. Semantic flow methods are designed to handle images depicting different instances of the same object or scene category. We introduce a novel approach to semantic flow, dubbed proposal flow, that establishes reliable correspondences using object proposals. Unlike prevailing semantic flow approaches that operate on pixels or regularly sampled local regions, proposal flow benefits from the characteristics of modern object proposals, that exhibit high repeatability at multiple scales, and can take advantage of both local and geometric consistency constraints among proposals. We also show that the corresponding sparse proposal flow can effectively be transformed into a conventional dense flow field. We introduce two new challenging datasets that can be used to evaluate both general semantic flow techniques and region-based approaches such as proposal flow. We use these benchmarks to compare different matching algorithms, object proposals, and region features within proposal flow, to the state of the art in semantic flow. This comparison, along with experiments on standard datasets, demonstrates that proposal flow significantly outperforms existing semantic flow methods in various settings.

There is an ongoing need for standardized, easily renewable immunoreagents for detecting African horsesickness virus (AHSV). Two phage displayed single-chain variable fragment (scFv) antibodies, selected from a semi-synthetic chicken antibody library, were used to develop double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (DAS-ELISAs) to detect AHSV. In the DAS-ELISAs, the scFv previously selected with directly immobilized AHSV-3functioned as a serotype-specific reagent that recognized only AHSV-3. In contrast, the one selected with AHSV-8 captured by IgG against AHSV-3 recognized all nine AHSV serotypes but not the Bryanston strain of equine encephalosis virus. Serving as evidence for its serogroup-specificity. These two scFvs can help to rapidly confirm the presence of AHSV while additional serotype-specific scFvs may simplify AHSV serotyping.
