Management and treatment of four cases of oral carcinoma cuniculatum
Constantinos Mourouzis,Iordanis Toursounidis,Christos Eftychiadis,Georgios Rallis 대한구강악안면외과학회 2024 대한구강악안면외과학회지 Vol.50 No.1
Objectives: Oral carcinoma cuniculatum (OCC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). It has similar clinicopathological characteristics to SCC and verrucous carcinoma (VC). We present a case series of OCC and analyse its unique features, diagnosis, and management. Patients and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of oral cancer patients treated by Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department from 2009 to 2020 with OCC biopsy findings. The clinicopathological characteristics and management of the OCC cases were analysed. Results: Four patients were identified with histologic findings of OCC, including three on the alveolar ridge mucosa and one on the tongue. Imaging revealed that two of the lesions located in the maxilla had osseous lysis. All four patients were all treated with radical excision, and the histopathology showed findings of SCC cuniculatum. It was decided that no further treatment was necessary. None of the patients has experienced recurrence during follow-up. Conclusion: OCC is a distinct entity that is more locally aggressive than VC but is associated with good prognosis. Radical surgical removal is considered appropriate for OCC. Emphasis should be given on an early diagnosis, as it remains challenging.
Sympathetic Inferior Laryngeal Anastomosing Branch: Our Two-Year Experience
Constantinos Parpounas,Michael Yiallourides,Vasilis Constantinides 대한갑상선-내분비외과학회 2021 The Koreran journal of Endocrine Surgery Vol.21 No.4
Purpose: The knowledge of sympathetic inferior laryngeal anastomosing branch (SILAB) is of great importance as it may mimic the non-recurrent laryngeal nerve (NRLN) leading to recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) damage in inexperienced hands. We describe our 2-year experience in SILAB recognition, describing the prevalence, diameter, and method of avoiding SILAB misinterpretation. Methods: Consecutive patients undergoing total thyroidectomy with either prophylactic or therapeutic central compartment lymphadenectomy were included. Operative technique was standardized amongst 2 endocrine surgeons. Data was prospectively collected in a dedicated database. Demographic, pathological, operative, and biochemical parameters were collected, and subgroup outcomes were compared. Results: One hundred thirty-three patients were included in the study, 100 were female (75.2%). Nineteen SILABS were recognized (19/202; 9.4%), 14 (14/99; 14.14%) on the right and 5 (5/103; 4.85%) on the left side. In a total of 6 cases (6/19; 31.5%), the SILAB diameter was similar to the RLN. Conclusion: SILAB may not be as rare as previously thought. It not only branches to the RLN up to 2 cm from the level of the larynx but can branch more caudally up to the level of the clavicle. Intraoperative nerve monitoring is a very useful tool to avoid misinterpretation of SILAB to NRLN when used appropriately.

<P>The synthesis and properties of the hybrid organic/inorganic germanium perovskite compounds, AGeI3, are reported (A = Cs, organic cation). The systematic study of this reaction system led to the isolation of 6 new hybrid semiconductors. Using CsGeI3 (<B>1</B>) as the prototype compound, we have prepared methylammonium, CH3NH3GeI3 (<B>2</B>), formamidinium, HC(NH2)2GeI3 (<B>3</B>), acetamidinium, CH3C(NH2)2GeI3 (<B>4</B>), guanidinium, C(NH2)3GeI3 (<B>5</B>), trimethylammonium, (CH3)3NHGeI3 (<B>6</B>), and isopropylammonium, (CH3)2C(H)NH3GeI3 (<B>7</B>) analogues. The crystal structures of the compounds are classified based on their dimensionality with <B>1</B>–<B>4</B> forming 3D perovskite frameworks and <B>5</B>–<B>7</B> 1D infinite chains. Compounds <B>1</B>–<B>7</B>, with the exception of compounds <B>5</B> (centrosymmetric) and <B>7</B> (nonpolar acentric), crystallize in polar space groups. The 3D compounds have direct band gaps of 1.6 eV (<B>1</B>), 1.9 eV (<B>2</B>), 2.2 eV (<B>3</B>), and 2.5 eV (<B>4</B>), while the 1D compounds have indirect band gaps of 2.7 eV (<B>5</B>), 2.5 eV (<B>6</B>), and 2.8 eV (<B>7</B>). Herein, we report on the second harmonic generation (SHG) properties of the compounds, which display remarkably strong, type I phase-matchable SHG response with high laser-induced damage thresholds (up to ∼3 GW/cm2). The second-order nonlinear susceptibility, χS(2), was determined to be 125.3 ± 10.5 pm/V (<B>1</B>), (161.0 ± 14.5) pm/V (<B>2</B>), 143.0 ± 13.5 pm/V (<B>3</B>), and 57.2 ± 5.5 pm/V (<B>4</B>). First-principles density functional theory electronic structure calculations indicate that the large SHG response is attributed to the high density of states in the valence band due to sp-hybridization of the Ge and I orbitals, a consequence of the lone pair activation.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jacsat/2015/jacsat.2015.137.issue-21/jacs.5b01025/production/images/medium/ja-2015-01025x_0013.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ja5b01025'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
Does Higher Education Affect Economic Growth? The Case of Greece
Panagiotis Pegkas,Constantinos Tsamadias 한국국제경제학회 2014 International Economic Journal Vol.28 No.3
The purpose of the study is twofold: first, it presents an extensive review of empirical studies that have examined the relationship between higher education and economic growth. Second, it estimates the effect of higher education on economic growth in Greece over the period 1960–2009. It applies the model introduced by Mankiw, Romer, and Weil (1992) by using the higher enrolment rates as a proxy of human capital. The paper employs cointegration and an error-correction model to test the causal relationship between higher education, physical capital investments and economic growth. The empirical analysis reveals that there is a long-run cointegrating relationship between higher education, physical capital investments and economic growth. The elasticity of economic growth with respect to higher education is 0.52%. The results also suggest that there is evidence of unidirectional long-run and short-run Granger causality running fromhigher education and physical capital investments to economic growth.
Fundamental period of infilled RC frame structures with vertical irregularity
Panagiotis G. Asteris,Constantinos C. Repapis,Filippos Foskolos,Alkis Fotos,Athanasios K. Tsaris 국제구조공학회 2017 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.61 No.5
The determination of the fundamental period of vibration of a structure is essential to earthquake design. Current codes provide formulas for the approximate estimation of the fundamental period of earthquake-resistant building systems. These formulas are dependent only on the height of the structure or number of storeys without taking into account the presence of infill walls into the structure, despite the fact that infill walls increase the stiffness and mass of the structure leading to significant changes in the fundamental period. Furthermore, such a formulation is overly conservative and unable to account for structures with geometric irregularities. In this study, which comprises the companion paper of previous published research by the authors, the effect of the vertical geometric irregularities on the fundamental periods of masonry infilled structures has been investigated, through a large set of infilled frame structure cases. Based on these results, an attempt to quantify the reduction of the fundamental period due to the vertical geometric irregularities has been made through a proposal of properly reduction factor.
On the fundamental period of infilled RC frame buildings
Panagiotis G. Asteris,Constantinos C. Repapis,Liborio Cavaleri,Vasilis Sarhosis,Adamantia Athanasopoulou 국제구조공학회 2015 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.54 No.6
This paper investigates the fundamental period of vibration of RC buildings by means of finite element macro-modelling and modal eigenvalue analysis. As a base study, a number of 14-storey RC buildings have been considered “according to code designed” and “according to code non-designed”. Several parameters have been studied including the number of spans; the span length in the direction of motion; the stiffness of the infills; the percentage openings of the infills and; the location of the soft storeys. The computed values of the fundamental period are compared against those obtained from seismic code and equations proposed by various researchers in the literature. From the analysis of the results it has been found that the span length, the stiffness of the infill wall panels and the location of the soft storeys are crucial parameters influencing the fundamental period of RC buildings.
Robotization and Labor Supply in the Context of a Dynamic Monopsony: Novel Evidence from South Korea
Ahmed J. Saade,Constantinos Alexiou,Yacine Belghitar 서울대학교 경제연구소 2022 Seoul journal of economics Vol.35 No.3
We estimate the effects of robotization on labor supply in Manufacturing, Services and the whole of the South Korean economy using exponential hazard and a random effects logit methodologies over the period 1999-2019. Our findings suggest that a larger operational stock of industrial robots in manufacturing is associated with manufacturing (non-manufacturing) workers becoming more (less) responsive to a change in wages in their decision to quit to non-employment, whilst the ease with which firms can poach workers is found to be unaffected by robotization.
Environmental assessment of a BIPV system
Demetrios N. Papadopoulos,Constantinos N. Antonopoulos,Vagelis G. Papadakis Techno-Press 2022 Advances in energy research Vol.8 No.1
The application of Photovoltaic (PV) power in the building sector, is expanding as part of the ongoing energy transition into renewables. The article addresses the question of sustainability of energy generated from PVs through an environmental assessment of a building-integrated PV system (BIPV) connected to the grid through net metering. Employing retrospective life cycle analysis (LCA), with the CCaLC2 software and ecoinvent data, the article shows that the carrying structure and other balance of system (BOS) components are responsible for a three times higher energy payback time than the literature average. However, total environmental impact can be lowered through reuse or reinstallation of PVs on the same building structure after the 30-year interval. Further ways to improve environmental efficiency include identifying the most polluting materials for each LCA parameter. The results of this study are of interest to researchers and producers of PVs and organizations investing and promoting decentralized power production through PVs.
