        R&D activities dispersion and innovation: implications for firms in China

        Despite the increasing attention paid to the dispersion of research and development (R&D)activities, scholars have presented opposing arguments with respect to its effects oninnovation output to date. To address this controversy, we conceptualize and empirically testa model that links different dimensions of R&D activities dispersion and innovation output. Moreover, few studies have explicitly addressed R&D activities dispersion among firms inemerging markets. Using a sample of 244 Chinese high-tech firms collected from 2000 to2009, this study aims to determine how firms in developing countries domestically andglobally distribute their activities. The results show that a firm in an emerging market with adecentralized R&D organizational structure with geographically centralized R&D activitieshas better innovation outputs. Moreover, institutional development positively moderates therelationship between the dispersion of R&D activities and innovation performance.

        Mechanical Performance of Prefabricated External Wall Panel under Horizontal Displacement

        In this paper, experiment and Finite Element Method (FEM) approaches are employed to study the mechanical performance of prefabricated external wall panel under lateral displacement. Tensile bond strength test and Z-shaped specimen direct shear test of the bonding interface of mortar to ceramsite concrete are performed, the normal and shear mechanical property of the interface is studied respectively. Scaled model test of prefabricated external wall panel under lateral displacement is then performed to obtain loaddisplacement curve, and mechanical behavior of prefabricated external wall panel in different stages is studied. Moreover, ABAQUS finite element analysis model for scaled model test panel is established based on previous study about bond interface and the results from experiment and FEM analysis are relatively consistent with each other. It is found that with the gradual increase in tangential contact stiffness of joint interfaces, the overall lateral stiffness of wall panels will approach complete joint consolidation conditions before the peak load. However, when the tangential contact stiffness of joint interfaces increases to a certain extent, there will be little change in initial lateral stiffness.

      • Prognostic Significance of Annexin A1 Expression in Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma

        Annexin A1 is a 37-kDa calcium- and phospholipid-binding protein of the annexin superfamily considered to play an important role in tumorigenesis. However, associations with clinicopathological features in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cases have yet to be fully defined. We therefore investigated the prognostic value of annexin A1 protein as a PDAC biomarker in 83 tumor and matched non-cancerous tissues or normal pancreas tissues. Expression was analyzed using real-time RT-PCR, Western blotting and immunohistochemistry. In non-tumor tissue, myoepithelial cells showed no or weak expression of annexin A1 while expression was strong and sometimes even located in the nuclei of endothelial cells in tumor tissue. High expression was significantly associated with advanced stage (P <0.05) and a worse overall survival (P <0.05). These results provide new insights to better understand the role of annexin A1 in PDAC survival, and might be relevant to prediction of prognosis and development of more effective therapeutic strategies aimed at improving survival.

      • Simultaneous Modulated Accelerated Radiation Therapy and Concurrent Weekly Paclitaxel in the Treatment of Locally Advanced Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

        Objectives: To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of simultaneous accelerated radiation therapy (SMART) and concurrent weekly paclitaxel in the treatment of locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods: Forty-one patients with pathologically confirmed nasopharyngeal carcinoma were treated by SMART with concurrent weekly paclitaxel. Daily fraction doses of 2.5 Gy and 2.0 Gy were prescribed to the gross tumor volume (GTV) and clinical target volume (CTV) to a total dose of 70 Gy and 56 Gy, respectively. Paclitaxel of $45mg/m^2$ was administered concurrently with radiation therapy every week. Adjuvant chemotherapy was given four weeks after the completion of the radiotherapy (RT) if the tumor demonstrated only a partial response (PR). Results: All patients completed the radiotherapy (RT) course. Adjuvant chemotherapy was administered to 12 patients due to PR. The CR (complete remission) rate was 82.9% three months after RT. Thirty-nine (95.1%) patients completed the concurrent weekly chemotherapy with paclitaxel, and two patients skipped their sixth course. Seven patients had a 15% dosage reduction at the fifth and sixth course due to grade 3 mucositis. The median follow-up was 30 (range, 14-42) months. The three-year overall survival (OS), metastases-free survival (MFS), and local control rates were 77.0%, 64.4%, and 97.6%, respectively. No correlation between survival rate and T or N stage was observed. Grade 3 acute mucositis and xerostomia were present in 17.1% and 7.1%, respectively. Conclusion: SMART with concurrent weekly paclitaxel is a potentially effective and toxicity tolerable approach in the treatment of locally advanced NPC.

      • Short Text Similarity Measure Based on Double Vector Space Model

        Short text similarity measure is the basis of classification and duplicate checking of the short texts. Allowing for the insufficient consideration of the sentence semantic and structure information in similarity calculation between two short texts, we propose a novel method of short text similarity calculation based on double vector space model on the basis of traditional vector space model. Creatively transforming traditional vector space model into double vector space model. We utilize the numeral data link relations of Wikipedia to calculate semantic similarity between words, and calculate text structure similarity by dependency trees. Finally, we get the synthetic similarity by combining the semantic similar vector and structure similar vector. Our experiment results demonstrate that the proposed method has higher accuracy than other methods.

        Cyclic CO2 capture characteristics of a pellet derived from sol-gel CaO powder with Ca12Al14O33 support

        A novel calcium-based pellet was prepared by extrusion of sol-gel CaO powder and cement with high aluminum- based content. Limestone was used for comparison. The cyclic CO2 capture performance and carbonation kinetics of the sorbents were investigated in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The changes in phase and microstructure were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer Emmet Teller (BET) surface area, respectively. The results indicate that the pellet consisted of CaO and Ca12Al14O33 after initial calcination. Limestone reactivity decreased dramatically with the increase in the cycle number, whereas the pellet showed a relatively stable cyclic CO2 capture performance with high reactivity. The CO2 capture capacity of the pellet achieved 0.43 g CO2/g sorbent after 50 cycles at 650 oC and 850 oC for carbonation and calcination, respectively. Moreover, the pellet obtained fast carbonation rates with slight decay after multiple cycles. The porous microstructure of the pellet contributed to the high reactivity of the sorbent during high temperature reactions, and the support material of Ca12Al14O33, enhanced the cyclic durability of the calcium-based sorbents.

        The Role of Intestinal Microbiota and Mast Cell in a Rat Model of Visceral Hypersensitivity

        Background/Aims To explore the role of intestinal flora and mast cells in visceral hypersensitivity (VH). Methods The experimental animals were divided into 4 groups: control group, VH group, VH + VSL#3 group, and VH + ketotifen group. Stool samples were collected from each group (n = 3) for a further analysis using 16S ribosomal DNA gene sequence. Visceral sensitivity was evaluated by abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR) score. Colon tissues of rats were obtained from each group. Mast cells were detected by toluidine blue staining. The degranulation of mast cells was assessed by transmission electron microscopy. Results VH rat model could successfully be induced by acetic acid enema combined with partial limb restraint method. Compared with rats in the control group, AWR score, number of mast cells, and degranulation of mast cells were increased in the VH rats, which could be reduced by administration of ketotifen or probiotic VSL#3. Clostridium sensu stricto 1 abundance was higher in the VH group compared to the control group, which could be restored by application of probiotic VSL#3. Conclusions Probiotic VSL#3 decreases visceral sensitivity in VH rats. The mechanism may be related to mast cell and intestinal flora. Change of Clostridium sensu stricto 1 abundance may be a basis for VH observed in irritable bowel syndrome and may be prevented by specific probiotic administration.         PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SURFACE-FUNCTIONALIZATION OF SILICA-COATED MAGNETITE NANOPARTICLES FOR DRUG DELIVERY

        Fe 3 O 4 – SiO 2 core – shell structure nanoparticles containing magnetic properties were investigatedfor their potential use in drug delivery. The Fe 3 O 4 – SiO 2 core – shell structure nanoparticles weresuccessfully synthesized by a simple and convenient way. The Fe 3 O 4 – SiO 2 nanoparticles showedsuperparamagnetic behavior, indicating a great application potential in separation technologies. From the application point of view, the prepared nanoparticles were found to act as an e±cientdrug carrier. Speci¯cally, the surface of the core – shell nanoparticles was modi¯ed with aminogroups by use of silane coupling agent 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS). Doxorubicin(DOX) was successfully grafted to the surface of the core – shell nanoparticles after the decorationwith the carboxyl acid groups on the surface of amino-modi¯ed core – shell structure nano-particles. Moreover, the nanocomposite showed a good drug delivery performance in the DOX-loading e±ciency and drug release experiments, con¯rming that the materials had a great ap-plication potential in drug delivery. It is envisioned that the prepared materials are the idealagent for application in medical diagnosis and therapy.

        A highly efficient catalyst for direct synthesis of methyl acrylate via methoxycarbonylation of acetylene

        A non-petroleum approach for the catalytic synthesis of methyl acrylate via methoxycarbonylation of acetylene with carbon monoxide and methanol as nucleophilic reagent has been studied under various conditions. Pd(OAc)2/2-PyPPh2/p-tsa was found to be a highly efficient catalytic system. The types of phosphorus ligands and their concentration was a determinative factor for catalytic activity. Mono-dentate phosphorus ligand such as triphenylphosphine has no activity while 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine with a mixed N-P bidentate structure has an excellent activity. Catalytic performance of acids depends on their acidic strength and coordinative property. Among all acidic promoters, p-toluenesulfonic acid displayed an excellent performance. Other parameters such as solvent polarity and initial pressure of carbon monoxide have also important influences on the hydroesterification of acetylene. It is beneficial for the reaction that the solvents have a high polarity. At low pressure of carbon monoxide, to high active palladium catalyst, the reaction easily proceeded. However, at high pressure of carbon monoxide, acetylene will transfer from solution to gas phase,resulting in lower conversion of acetylene. In addition, due to steric hindrance of alcohols, methanol has a highest activity in hydroesterification of acetylene in low carbon alcohols. Under the optimal reaction conditions, 99.5% of acetylene conversion and 99.7% of selectivity toward methyl acrylate as well as 2,502 h−1 TOF were achieved.
