Spectropolarimetric Evidence for a Siphon Flow along an Emerging Magnetic Flux Tube

<P>We study the dynamics and topology of an emerging magnetic flux concentration using high spatial resolution spectropolarimetric data acquired with the Imaging Magnetograph eXperiment on board the SUNRISE balloon-borne solar observatory. We obtain the full vector magnetic field and the line of sight (LOS) velocity through inversions of the Fe I line at 525.02 nm with the SPINOR code. The derived vector magnetic field is used to trace magnetic field lines. Two magnetic flux concentrations with different polarities and LOS velocities are found to be connected by a group of arch-shaped magnetic field lines. The positive polarity footpoint is weaker (1100 G) and displays an upflow, while the negative polarity footpoint is stronger (2200 G) and shows a downflow. This configuration is naturally interpreted as a siphon flow along an arched magnetic flux tube.</P>
Elevated Lipoprotein(a) Levels and Atrial Fibrillation: A Systematic Review

Objective: The role of lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) as a possibly causal risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease has been well established. However, the clinical evidence regarding the association between Lp(a) levels and atrial fibrillation (AF) remains limited and inconsistent. This study aimed to analyze the association between elevated Lp(a) levels or single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) related to high levels of Lp(a) and AF. Methods: This systematic review was performed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. A literature search was performed to identify studies that evaluated the association between Lp(a) levels or SNPs related to high levels of Lp(a) and AF. Observational studies with a cross-sectional, case-control, or cohort design were included in this systematic review, without limitations according to language, country, or publication type. Results: Eleven observational studies including 1,246,817 patients were eligible for this systematic review. Two cross-sectional studies, 5 prospective/retrospective cohort studies, and 4 Mendelian randomization studies were analyzed. Two cross-sectional studies that compared Lp(a) levels between patients with and without AF showed conflicting results. Cohort studies that evaluated the incidence of AF according to Lp(a) levels showed different results: no association (3 studies), a positive association (1 study), and an inverse relationship (1 study). Finally, Mendelian randomization studies also showed heterogeneous results (positive association: 2 studies; inverse association: 1 study; no association: 1 study). Conclusion: Although there could be an association between Lp(a) levels and AF, the results of the studies published to date are contradictory and not yet definitive. Therefore, further research should clarify this issue.
Development of a gamma irradiation loop to evaluate the performance of a EURO-GANEX process

A new irradiation loop design has been developed, which provides the ability to carry out radiolyticresistance studies of extraction systems simulating process relevant conditions in an easy and simpleway. The step-by-step loop configuration permits an easy modification of settings and has a relative lowvolume requirement. This irradiation loop has been initially set up to test the main EURO-GANEX processsteps: the lanthanide (Ln) and actinide (An) co-extraction followed by the transuranic (TRU) stripping. The performance and changes in the composition have been analyzed during the irradiation experimentby different techniques: gamma spectroscopy and ICP-MS for the extraction and corrosion behavior ofthe full system, and HPLC-MS and Raman spectroscopy to determine the degradation of the organic andaqueous solvents, respectively. The Ln and An co-extraction step and the corrosion that occurred duringthe first irradiation step revealed the favorable expected results according to literature. The effects ofacidity changes occurred during the irradiation process, the presence of stainless corrosion products insolution as well as the new possible degradation compounds have been explored in the An stripping step. The results obtained demonstrate the importance of developing realistic irradiation experiments wheredifferent factors affecting the performance can be easily studied and isolated
Numerical simulation of air discharged in subcooled water pool

Turbulent jet discharges in subcooled water pools are essential for safety systems in nuclear power plants, specifically in the pressure suppression pool of boiling water reactors and In-containment Refueling Water Storage Tank of advanced pressurized water reactors. The gas and liquid flow in these systems is investigated using multiphase flow analysis. This field has been extensively examined using a combination of experiments, theoretical models, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. ANSYS CFX offers two approaches to model multiphase flow behavior. The non-homogeneous Eulerian- Eulerian Model has been used in this work; it computes global information and is more convenient to study interpenetrated fluids. This study utilized the Large Eddy Simulation Model as the turbulence model, as it is better suited for non-stationary and buoyant flows. The CFD results of this study were validated with experimental data and theoretical results previously obtained. The figures of merit dimensionless penetration length and the dimensionless buoyancy length show good agreement with the experimental measurements. Correlations for these variables were obtained as a function of dimensionless numbers to give generality using only initial boundary conditions. CFD numerical model developed in this research has the capability to simulate the behavior of non-condensable gases discharged in water.

<P>Of the two solar lines, K I<I>D</I>1 and <I>D</I>2, almost all attention so far has been devoted to the <I>D</I>1 line, as <I>D</I>2 is severely affected by an O2 atmospheric band. This, however, makes the latter appealing for balloon and space observations from above (most of) the Earth’s atmosphere. We estimate the residual effect of the O2 band on the K I<I>D</I>2 line at altitudes typical for stratospheric balloons. Our aim is to study the feasibility of observing the 770 nm window. Specifically, this paper serves as a preparation for the third flight of the Sunrise balloon-borne observatory. The results indicate that the absorption by O2 is still present, albeit much weaker, at the expected balloon altitude. We applied the obtained O2 transmittance to K I<I>D</I>2 synthetic polarimetric spectra and found that in the absence of line-of-sight motions, the residual O2 has a negligible effect on the K I<I>D</I>2 line. On the other hand, for Doppler-shifted K I<I>D</I>2 data, the residual O2 might alter the shape of the Stokes profiles. However, the residual O2 absorption is sufficiently weak at stratospheric levels that it can be divided out if appropriate measurements are made, something that is impossible at ground level. Therefore, for the first time with Sunrise III, we will be able to perform polarimetric observations of the K I<I>D</I>2 line and, consequently, we will have improved access to the thermodynamics and magnetic properties of the upper photosphere from observations of the K I lines.</P>
