Vol.39 No.1

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of exposure to neglect on school adjustment. whether youth activity moderates the relationship between neglect and school adjustment. This study was conducted with data from ‘The Korean Child Youth Panel Study’ 3rd wave and the subjects of the study were 2,035 students. Crucial findings are the following. First, exposure to neglect showed a significantly negative relationship with school adjustment. Second, there are significant moderating effects of youth activity on the neglect -school adjustment relationship. Based on the results, we can find grounds to support strategic intervention.

Neoclassical Realism and South Korea’s Nuclear Weapons Policy

2015 Asian International Studies Review Vol.16 No.1

This article develops a neoclassical realist model of decisionmaking that starts with the realist foundation of power, then layers on additional variables at both the domestic and individual levels. Based on a psychological conception of power, and differentiating the state, the regime, and the government, the model integrates prior neoclassical studies that emphasize elite perceptions, state structure, and strategic culture. As an illustrative example, the model is applied to South Korea’s current policymaking regarding potential acquisition of nuclear arms. While South Korea is assessed to have sufficient power to pursue nuclear weapons, the lack of military utility coupled with likely harm to economic and reputational interests suggest continued rejection of such a policy.

The Myth of the Nuclear Taboo

2017 Asian International Studies Review Vol.18 No.1

Why have nuclear weapons not been used since 1945? Cold War studies of mutual deterrence have been challenged in recent years by constructivist notions of an evolutionary norm of nuclear non-use. Most famously characterized as the “nuclear taboo,” this argument asserts that the norm has become a constitutive component of civilized international society. Herein, I consider the underlying causal logic behind nuclear non-use, finding that it is more a product of rationalist security calculations (deterrence) and respect for the traditional norms of Just War Theory than it is an internalized redefinition of interest. With a new age of proliferation dawning, marked by both state and transnational actors who see value in shock for the sake of shock, I conclude that the norm of nuclear nonuse is under renewed threat.

      • Understanding Child Maltreatment in Hanoi : Intimate Partner Violence, Low Self-Control, and Social and Child Care Support

Emery, Clifton R.,Nguyen, Hai Trung,Kim, Jaeyop SAGE Publications 2014 Journal of interpersonal violence Vol.29 No.7

<P>This study aimed to understand the role of low self-control, stress, depression, experience of intimate partner violence (IPV) and child abuse, and social support and child care support in the etiology of child abuse and neglect in Hanoi, Vietnam. The study estimated the prevalence of child maltreatment in a randomly selected, representative cluster sample of 269 Hanoi families. Among these families, 21% reported severe abuse of their children in the past year, 12% reported neglect. Low self-control was found to be strongly associated with child abuse. Life stressors were found to be strongly associated with neglect, but only indirectly with child abuse. Counter-intuitively, a positive interaction between social support and low self-control was found, suggesting that social support of parents low in self-control is associated with more maltreatment. Implications for research, intervention, and criminological theory are discussed.</P>

Targeted Temperature Management with Hypothermia for Comatose Patients After Cardiac Arrest

2023 Clinical and Experimental Emergency Medicine Vol.10 No.1

Targeted temperature management with mild hypothermia (TTM-hypothermia; 32–34 °C) is a treatment strategy for adult patients who are comatose after cardiac arrest. Robust preclinical data support the beneficial effects of hypothermia beginning within 4 hours of reperfusion and maintained during the several days of postreperfusion brain dysregulation. TTM-hypothermia increased survival and functional recovery after adult cardiac arrest in several trials and in real-world implementation studies. TTM-hypothermia also benefits neonates with hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. However, larger and methodologically more rigorous adult trials do not detect benefit. Reasons for inconsistency of adult trials include the difficulty delivering differential treatment between randomized groups within 4 hours and the use of shorter durations of treatment. Furthermore, adult trials enrolled populations that vary in illness severity and brain injury, with individual trials enriched for higher or lower illness severity. There are interactions between illness severity and treatment effect. Current data indicate that TTM-hypothermia implemented quickly for adult patients after cardiac arrest, may benefit select patients at risk of severe brain injury but not benefit other patients. More data are needed on how to identify treatment-responsive patients and on how to titrate the timing and duration of TTM-hypothermia.

Cardiovascular effects of resveratrol supplementation atrest and during exercise in humans

( Heather L Clifton ),( Hyun Bae Kim ),( Jong Kyung Kim ),( Charles L Stebbins ) 한국운동영양학회 2012 Physical Activity and Nutrition (Phys Act Nutr) Vol.16 No.4

Resveratrol is a polyphenol found in food sources such as peanuts, berries, grapes and red wine. It has been touted for, among other actions, beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system. Consequently, it has been marketed as a nutritional supplement for healthy individuals. Using a double-blind, crossover design, we tested the hypothesis that chronic supplementation with resveratrol attenuates blood pressure at rest and during skeletal muscle contraction and augments endothelial function and exercise-induced increases in skeletal muscle blood flow in this group.Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), endothelial function (evaluated via flow mediated dilation) brachial artery diameter (ultrasound) and rhythmic forearm contraction-induced increases in skeletal muscle blood flow (Doppler/ultrasound) were assessed before and after chronic (500 mg/day for 28-32 days, n = 14) supplementation with resveratrol. Compared to placebo, resveratrol supplementation had modest effects on resting MAP(82 ± 2 vs. 80 ± 2 mmHg) (P < 0.05). However, no effects of this polyphenol were seen on HR, flow mediated dilation or exercise-induced increases in MAP, brachial artery diameter or blood flow. We concluded that 30 days of supplementation with a commercially available dose of resveratrol (500 mg/day) have minimal, if any, beneficial cardiovascular effects in healthy individuals and do not improve endothelial or cardiovascular function during exercise.

      • Relationship between hardness and plastically deformed structural steel elements

        Nashid, Hassan,Clifton, Charles,Ferguson, George,Hodgson, Micheal,Seal, Chris,Choi, Jay-Hyouk 테크노프레스 2015 Earthquakes and structures Vol.8 No.3

A field based non-destructive hardness method is being developed to determine plastic strain in steel elements subjected to seismic loading. The focus of this study is on the active links of eccentrically braced frames (EBFs). The 2010/2011 Christchurch earthquake series, especially the very intense February 22 shaking, which was the first earthquake worldwide to push complete EBF systems into their inelastic state, generating a moderate to high level of plastic strain in EBF active links for a range of buildings from 3 to 23 storeys in height. Plastic deformation was confined to the active links. This raised two important questions: what was the extent of plastic deformation and what effect does that have on post-earthquake steel properties? A non-destructive hardness test method is being used to determine a relationship between hardness and plastic strain in active link beams. Active links from the earthquake affected, 23-storey Pacific Tower building in Christchurch are being analysed in the field and laboratory. Test results to date show clear evidence that this method is able to give a good relationship between plastic strain and demand. This paper presents significant findings from this project to investigate the relationship between hardness and plastic strain that warrant publication prior to the completion of the project. Principal of these is the discovery that hot rolled steel beams carry manufacturing induced plastic strains, in regions of the webs, of up to 5%.
