Globalization and the Scrambling Process of Catching Up in Mexico
Clemente Ruiz Duran 서울대학교 경제연구소 2019 Seoul journal of economics Vol.32 No.1
In the last 50 years, Mexico’s manufacturing growth has been fostered, although its competitiveness has relied on the low wage paradigm. In this article, the country’s immersion in globalization is analyzed, thereby departing from the effects derived by the oil crisis that forced the country to leave the trap of natural resources to generate productive value chains through the economic opening boosted by the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and subsequently, by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Such economic opening allowed the development of global value chains through original equipment manufacturing in the automotive, electronics, pharmaceutical, and medical devices industries. However, this process has been characterized by low investment coefficients and scarce innovation compared with Korea, Malaysia and China, due to the lack of an institutional framework that could have promoted innovation to allow the country to overcome the middle-income trap.
Endoparasites of Small Mammals in Edo State, Nigeria
Clement Isaac,Benjamin Igho Igbinosa,John Asekh Ohiolei,Catherine Eki Osimen 대한기생충학열대의학회 2018 The Korean Journal of Parasitology Vol.56 No.1
Some small mammals occur as household pests and harbour a number of parasites that could be of public health importance. This study profiled the helminth and protozoan parasites in trapped small mammals within and around human dwelling places (houses) located across 4 major towns (Auchi, Benin, Ekpoma, and Uromi) and environs in Edo state, Nigeria. Six genera (Apodemus sp., Crocidura sp., Mastomys natalensis, Mus musculus, Rattus sp., and Sorex sp.) were identified from 502 trapped small mammals. Overall, M. musculus (71.9%) and Rattus rattus (20.1%) were the most frequently trapped. In total, on examination of blood, gastrointestinal contents, and brain tissues, 12 helminth taxa (Angiostrongylus sp., Aspicularis sp., Capillaria sp., Gongylonema sp., Heterakis spumosa, Hymenolepis diminuta, Hymenolepis nana, Mastophorus muris, Moniliformis moniliformis, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, Strongyloides sp., Trichosomoides sp., and Trichuris sp.), and 6 protozoan parasites (Babesia sp., Trypanosoma lewisi, Plasmodium sp., Eimeria sp., Isospora sp., and Toxoplasma gondii) were isolated. Most prevalent helminths with relatively heavy mean intensity were Strongyloides sp. and Heterakis spumosa, while Plasmodium, Eimeria, and Isospora were the most prevalent protozoan parasites. Generally, intrinsic factors like sex and age had marginal influence on the rate and burden of infection in M. musculus and R. rattus. Although the infection rate and prevalence of zoonotic parasites were low, they were largely recovered in rodents from Ekpoma. This study elucidates the public health implication of the presence of zoonotic parasites in these small mammals.

Background: The aims were to assess whether sex had a clinically significant independent influence on the outcome of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) according to the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score, Short Form (SF-) 12 scores and patient satisfaction at 1 year. Methods: A retrospective cohort of 3510 primary TKA were identified. Patient demographics, comorbidities, WOMAC and SF-12 scores were collected preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively. Patient satisfaction were assessed at 1 year. Results: There were 1584 males and 1926 females. The preoperative WOMAC and SF-12 scores were significantly (p < 0.001) worse in females but were not greater than the minimal clinically important difference (MCID). When adjustments had been made for confounding differences, females showed a significantly greater improvement in their function (1.5 points, p = 0.03) and total (1.5 points, p = 0.03) WOMAC scores compared to males, but these were not greater than the MCID. When adjustments had been made for confounding differences, females were less likely to be satisfied with their pain relief (p = 0.03) relative to males. Conclusion: Sex does not clinically influence the knee specific outcome (WOMAC) or overall generic (SF-12) health 1 year after TKA. However, satisfaction with pain relief after TKA was significantly less likely in female patients.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is commonly performed for feeding diffculties, in patients suffering from complicationsof nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and its treatment, namely radiotherapy and surgery. This case report describes the challenges inhemostasis and subsequent re-establishment of enteral access for feeding, in an elderly patient with a history of NPC, treated surgically, followed by radiotherapy, who presented with massive hematemesis following reinsertion of her PEG shortly after an accidentaldislodgement. Her previous nasopharyngectomy, wide field radiation therapy, and radical neck dissection precluded nasogastric tubefeeding, and the presence of a large hiatus hernia made reinsertion of a new PEG technically challenging. This case highlights themethods used to overcome the above challenges.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) plays a crucial role in the management of pancreaticobiliary disorders. Although the ERCP technique has been refined over the past five decades, it remains one of the endoscopic procedures with the highest rate of complications. Risk factors for ERCP-related complications are broadly classified into patient-, procedure-, and operator-related risk factors. Although non-modifiable, patient-related risk factors allow for the closer monitoring and instatement of preventive measures. Post-ERCP pancreatitis is the most common complication of ERCP. Risk reduction strategies include intravenous hydration, rectal nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and pancreatic stent placement in selected patients. Perforation is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and prompt recognition and treatment of ERCP-related perforations are key to ensuring good clinical outcomes. Endoscopy plays an expanding role in the treatment of perforations. Specific management strategies depend on the location of the perforation and the patient’s clinical status. The risk of post-ERCP bleeding can be attenuated by preprocedural optimization and adoption of intra-procedural techniques. Endoscopic measures are the mainstay of management for post-ERCP bleeding. Escalation to angioembolization or surgery may be required for refractory bleeding. Post-ERCP cholangitis can be reduced with antibiotic prophylaxis in high risk patients. Bile culture-directed therapy plays an important role in antimicrobial treatment.

We study the impact of experimental imperfections on a recently proposed protocol for performing quantum simulations of vibronic spectroscopy. Specifically, we propose a method for quantifying the impact of these imperfections, optimizing an experiment to account for them, and benchmarking the results against a classical simulation method. We illustrate our findings using a proof of principle experimental simulation of part of the vibronic spectrum of tropolone. Our findings will inform the design of future experiments aiming to simulate the spectra of large molecules beyond the reach of current classical computers.

Basketball and the Politics of the Self among Ilonggo Migrants in Seoul, South Korea
Clement C. Camposano(클레멘트 캄포사노) 한국이민학회 2022 한국이민학 = Korean journal of international migration Vol.9 No.2
Filipino league basketball in Korea, which excludes nationals of the host country, allows migrants to generate forms of sociality defined variously by the enactment of ethnicity, by the maintenance of localized power relations, or by the display of emotional attachment to one’s hometown. Migrants “find themselves” in a familiar ethnic, geographic, and political terrain, and not in “the space of the other”. Aside from being a durable source of communal identity, therefore, basketball transforms the uncertainties of history into readable, inhabitable spaces.
Adoption of Mobile Peer-to-Peer Payment Apps : The Impact of Banking and SNS Apps Usage
Clement Jun Feng Lim,Byungwan Koh,Dongwon Lee 한국경영정보학회 2018 한국경영정보학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2018 No.11
Despite the growing amount of mobile peer-to-peer (P2P) payment applications available on mobile app stores, these applications are still in their infancy and have yet to see mass adoption. This study aims to explore the factors that influence the adoption of such mobile P2P payment applications by using a large scale data set based on the tracking of users’ actual mobile application usage behaviors. Our main findings reveal that the duration of each session that users use of traditional bank application has a significant relationship with their adoption of mobile P2P payment applications. In addition, we explore the social aspect of such mobile P2P payment applications by analyzing their social network applications usage and found that the amount of social network service applications used and usage duration positively impacted one’s adoption of mobile P2P payment applications. These findings have important theoretical and practical implications for stakeholders of mobile P2P payment solution providers as well as intermediaries/banks who provide their own payment applications to their customers.
