      • Killing Snowmen: Big Things and Rural Australia’s Existential Crises

Clare McCracken Academy of Mobility Humanities 2022 Mobility Humanities Vol.1 No.2

In the mid-1980s my father took the Alpine Shire to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to contest the proposed construction of a seventeen-metre-high concrete snowman. The Big Snowman was part of an Australian post Second World War tradition of constructing big kitsch monuments in small townships. These massive sculptures had been inherited from a similar trend in the United States and were designed to put communities on the tourist map by stopping the passing car in awe. Ultimately, my father was successful, and the Big Snowman was never built. Nonetheless, from the 1960s an estimated 350 Big Things were installed across Australia and around 150 still line Australian rural roadsides. This paper takes a mixed-method approach—utilising a family archive of documents related to the Big Snowman controversy, memory, and performance-based mobile fieldwork to ask what Big Things tell us about Australian national identity. Written in an auto-ethnographic style in conversation with mobilities, postcolonial, settler-colonial and feminist theory, this experimental paper articulates how elements of the “mechanic complex” that have been inherited from different countries can have complex site-specific meaning and impacts.

Association Between Leisure Time Physical Activity, Cardiopulmonary Fitness, Cardiovascular Risk Factors, and Cardiovascular Workload at Work in Firefighters

        Clare C.W. Yu,Chun T. Au,Frank Y.F. Lee,Raymond C.H. So,John P.S. Wong,Gary Y.K. Mak,Eric P. Chien,Alison M. McManus 한국산업안전공단 산업안전보건연구원 2015 Safety and health at work Vol.6 No.3

Background: Overweight, obesity, and cardiovascular disease risk factors are prevalent among firefighters in some developed countries. It is unclear whether physical activity and cardiopulmonary fitness reduce cardiovascular disease risk and the cardiovascular workload at work in firefighters. The present study investigated the relationship between leisure-time physical activity, cardiopulmonary fitness, cardiovascular disease risk factors, and cardiovascular workload at work in firefighters in Hong Kong. Methods: Male firefighters (n ¼ 387) were randomly selected from serving firefighters in Hong Kong (n ¼ 5,370) for the assessment of cardiovascular disease risk factors (obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, smoking, known cardiovascular diseases). One-third (Target Group) were randomly selected for the assessment of off-duty leisure-time physical activity using the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Maximal oxygen uptake was assessed, as well as cardiovascular workload using heart rate monitoring for each firefighter for four “normal” 24-hour working shifts and during real-situation simulated scenarios. Results: Overall, 33.9% of the firefighters had at least two cardiovascular disease risk factors. In the Target Group, firefighters who had higher leisure-time physical activity had a lower resting heart rate and a lower average working heart rate, and spent a smaller proportion of time working at a moderateintensity cardiovascular workload. Firefighters who had moderate aerobic fitness and high leisuretime physical activity had a lower peak working heart rate during the mountain rescue scenario compared with firefighters who had low leisure-time physical activities. Conclusion: Leisure-time physical activity conferred significant benefits during job tasks of moderate cardiovascular workload in firefighters in Hong Kong.

Contemporary Pharmacotherapeutics and the Management of Aggressive Behavior in an Adolescent Animal Model of Maladaptive Aggression

        Clare Einberger,Amanda Puckett,Lesley Ricci,Richard Melloni Jr. 대한정신약물학회 2020 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.18 No.2

Objective: Antipsychotic and anticonvulsant medications are increasingly being used as pharmacotherapeutic treatments for maladaptive aggression in youth, yet no information is available regarding whether these drugs exhibit aggressionspecific suppression in preclinical studies employing adolescent animal models of maladaptive aggression. This study examined whether the commonly used antipsychotics medications haloperidol and risperidone and the anticonvulsant medication valproate exert selective aggression-suppressing effects using a validated adolescent animal model of maladaptive aggression. Methods: Twenty-seven-day old Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were administered testosterone for 30 consecutive days during the first 4 weeks of adolescent development. The following day (during late adolescence), experimental animals received a single dose of haloperidol (0.00, 0.025, 0.50, 1.0 mg/kg), risperidone (0.00, 0.01, 0.03, 1.0 mg/kg), or valproate (0.00, 1.0, 5.0, 10.0 mg/kg) and tested for offensive aggression using the Resident/Intruder Paradigm. As a baseline, non-aggressive behavioral control, a separate set of pubertal hamsters was treated with sesame oil vehicle during the first 4 weeks of adolescence and then tested for aggression during late adolescence in parallel with the haloperidol, risperidone or valproate-treated experimental animals. Results: Risperidone and valproate selectively reduced the highly impulsive and intense maladaptive aggressive phenotype in a dose-dependent fashion. While haloperidol marginally reduced aggressive responding, its effects were non-specific as the decrease in aggression was concurrent with reductions in a several ancillary (non-aggressive) behaviors. Conclusion: These studies provide pre-clinical evidence that the contemporary pharmacotherapeutics risperidone and valproate exert specific aggression-suppressing effects in an adolescent animal model of maladaptive aggression.

      • Closing the Expertise Gap: A concrete example of guided reflection on a conference experience

        ( Clare Donovan ),( E. S. I. T,France ) 한국통역번역학회 2008 FORUM Vol.6 No.1

Cyborg Cinema: (Dis)Embodying Cultural Memory in the Digital Age

        ( Clare Parfitt ) 대한무용학회 2009 대한무용학회논문집 Vol.61 No.-

In postmodernity, a range of digital technologies are used to store memories. These include digital cameras, ipods, memory sticks, and online repositories such as YouTube and Flickr. This process is not just personal. Mediated memories, such as songs stored on ipods and films stored on YouTube, often refer to collective experiences, whether those of a group of friends, or a global audience. Once stored, these memory files have the capacity to reinforce existing group identities, as well as creating new imagined communities, bound, for example, by the common experience of watching a YouTube film transmitted around the globe by email. These technologies can therefore be considered as vehicles not just of personal memory, but of cultural memory. These technological mnemonic devices might appear as a substitute for the physical, bodily process of remembering. However, they do not function entirely separately from the body. Access to these digital archives can only be gained through human/digital interfaces, such as the computer screen and the ipod control pad. Each of these interfaces demands a certain mode of spectatorship on the part of the human user, and by engaging with the digital interface, the user`s body and identity are to a certain extent transformed. For example, the ipod`s white wires may confer on the user a status and identity as a techno-savvy participant in the global exchange of digital music. Although many memory storage technologies do not use moving images, those that do, such as YouTube and digital film, operate in relation to discourses about the relationship between the moving image and the spectator that pre-date the digital era. The image of the dancing body has been integral to this discourse since the earliest films captured the routines of popular cabaret performers at the turn of the twentieth century. Baz Luhrmann`s film Moulin Rouge! (2001), set in 1899 and produced using a combination of digital and analogue techniques, offers a contemporary reworking of this discourse. The film uses dance and music to invite viewers to enter convoluted circuits of popular cultural memory. Musical references to Nirvana and Fatboy Slim mingle with choreographies influenced by Hollywood musicals. The film has justly been called "a kind of movie museum" (McFarlane, 2001, p. 212). Like many contemporary museums, this film seeks to physically involve its viewers in the experience of cultural remembering (and forgetting). The film`s frenetic camerawork, rapid editing, and rich colours and textures seek to provoke a bodily reaction in the viewer, while the extensive DVD bonus features facilitate an interactive dissection and extension of the film text via the prosthetic device of the remote control. The spectator is invited to become a cyborg, affectively connecting with mediated images and sounds from the popular cultural past. As a cyborg, the spectator can physically enter into a network of historically, culturally and politically diverse bodies and viewing positions, and situate themselves in relation to various subcultural, national and transnational cultural identities. Moulin Rouge! therefore offers a posthuman experience of cultural memory for the digital age.

Glioma Immunotherapy: Advances and Challenges for Spinal Cord Gliomas

        Clare Grady,Kaitlyn Melnick,Ken Porche,Farhad Dastmalchi,Daniel J. Hoh,Maryam Rahman,Ashley Ghiaseddin 대한척추신경외과학회 2022 Neurospine Vol.19 No.1

Spinal cord gliomas are rare entities that often have limited surgical options. Immunotherapy has shown promise in intracranial gliomas with some research suggesting benefit for spinal cord gliomas. A focused review of immunotherapies that have been investigated in spinal cord gliomas was performed. The primary methods of immunotherapy investigated in spinal cord gliomas include immune checkpoint inhibitors, adoptive T-cell therapies, and vaccine strategies. There are innumerable challenges that must be overcome to effectively apply immunotherapeutic strategies to the spinal cord gliomas including low incidence, few antigenic targets, the blood spinal cord barrier, the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment and neurotoxic treatment effects. Nonetheless, research has suggested ways to overcome these challenges and treatments have been effective in case reports for metastatic non-small cell lung cancer, melanoma, midline glioma and glioblastoma. Current therapies for spinal cord gliomas are markedly limited. Further research is needed to determine if the success of immunotherapy for intracranial gliomas can be effectively applied to these unique tumors.
