        Control strategy of the lever-type active multiple tuned mass dampers for structures

        The lever-type active multiple tuned mass dampers (LT-AMTMD), consisting of several lever-type active tuned mass dampers (LT-ATMD), is proposed in this paper to attenuate the vibrations of long-span bridges under the excitation directly acting on the structure, rather than through the base. With resorting to the derived analytical-expressions for the dynamic magnification factors of the LT-AMTMD structure system, the performance assessment then is conducted on the LT-AMTMD with the identical stiffness and damping coefficient but unequal mass. Numerical results indicate that the LT-AMTMD with the actuator set at the mass block can provide better effectiveness in reducing the vibrations of long-span bridges compared to the LT-AMTMD with the actuator set at other locations. An appealing feature of the LT-AMTMD with the actuator set at the mass block is that the static stretching of the spring may be freely adjusted in accordance with the practical requirements through changing the location of the support within the viable range while maintaining the same performance (including the same stroke displacement). Likewise, it is shown that the LT-AMTMD with the actuator set at the mass block can further ameliorate the performance of the lever-type multiple tuned mass dampers (LT-MTMD) and has higher effectiveness than a single lever-type active tuned mass damper (LT-ATMD). Therefore, the LT-AMTMD with the actuator set at the mass block may be a better means of suppressing the vibrations of long-span bridges with the consequence of not requiring the large static stretching of the spring and possessing a desirable robustness.

      • A framework for fast estimation of structural seismic responses using ensemble machine learning model

        While recognized as most rigorous procedure leading to 'exact' structural seismic responses, nonlinear time history analysis is usually time consuming and computational demanding, especially when numerous structures remain to be analyzed. This paper proposes a framework to improve the time efficiency in evaluating the structural seismic demands, using ensemble machine learning models based on 'classification-regression' philosophy. Typical tall pier bridges widely located in southwest China are employed as illustrative examples to validate the efficiency and performance of this proposed framework. The results and discussion show that with properly selected input variables, the proposed ensemble model (ORF-ANN herein) performs better in predicting seismic demands than other single learning algorithms (i.e., ANN and ORF), while the time efficiency is improved over 90%. This proposed model could drastically improve the efficiency for determining structural parameters in preliminary design process, and thus reduce the iterations of trail analysis. Additionally, the model constructed from proposed framework is believed especially favored for evaluating the post-earthquake states/resilience of a region and/or highway network, where thousands of structures might be contained, and conducting nonlinear time history analysis for each one would be prohibitively time consuming and delay the rescue operations.

        Estimation of active multiple tuned mass dampers for asymmetric structures

        This paper proposes the application of active multiple tuned mass dampers (AMTMD) for translational and torsional response control of a simplified two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) structure, able to represent the dynamic characteristics of general asymmetric structures, under the ground acceleration. This 2DOF structure is a generalized 2DOF system of an asymmetric structure with predominant translational and torsional responses under earthquake excitations using the mode reduced-order method. Depending on the ratio of the torsional to the translational eigenfrequency, i.e. the torsional to translational frequency ratio (TTFR), of asymmetric structures, the following three cases can be distinguished: (1) torsionally flexible structures (TTFR < 1.0), (2) torsionally intermediate stiff structures (TTFR = 1.0), and (3) torsionally stiff structures (TTFR > 1.0). The even distribution of the AMTMD within the whole width and half width of the asymmetric structure, thus leading to three cases of installing the AMTMD (referred to as the AMTMD of case 1, AMTMD of case 2, AMTMD of case 3, respectively), is taken into account. In the present study, the criterion for searching the optimum parameters of the AMTMD is defined as the minimization of the minimum values of the maximum translational and torsional displacement dynamic magnification factors (DMF) of an asymmetric structure with the AMTMD. The criterion used for assessing the effectiveness of the AMTMD is selected as the ratio of the minimization of the minimum values of the maximum translational and torsional displacement DMF of the asymmetric structure with the AMTMD to the maximum translational and torsional displacement DMF of the asymmetric structure without the AMTMD. By resorting to these two criteria, a careful examination of the effects of the normalized eccentricity ratio (NER) on the effectiveness and robustness of the AMTMD are carried out in the mitigation of both the translational and torsional responses of the asymmetric structure. Likewise, the effectiveness of a single ATMD with the optimum positions is presented and compared with that of the AMTMD.

        An Efficient Provable Secure Public Auditing Scheme for Cloud Storage

        Cloud storage provides an easy, cost-effective and reliable way of data management for users without the burden of local data storage and maintenance. Whereas, this new paradigm poses many challenges on integrity and privacy of users` data, since users losing grip on their data after outsourcing the data to the cloud server. In order to address these problems, recently, Worku et al. have proposed an efficient privacy-preserving public auditing scheme for cloud storage. However, in this paper, we point out the security flaw existing in the scheme. An adversary, who is on-line and active, is capable of modifying the outsourced data arbitrarily and avoiding the detection by exploiting the security flaw. To fix this security flaw, we further propose a secure and efficient privacy-preserving public auditing scheme, which makes up the security flaw of Worku et al.`s scheme while retaining all the features. Finally, we give a formal security proof and the performance analysis, they show the proposed scheme has much more advantages over the Worku et al.`s scheme.

      • Trade Integration and Regional Economic Cooperation for Heterogeneous Structural lMembers

        Studies indicate that neither the orthodox theory of trade loberalization nor the classical organizational framework of regional integration represented by the European Union, a homogeneous members’ structure, could reasonably explain the trade practice in East Asia. First, a new organizational framework of regional integration for heterogeneous structural members such as East Asia or North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA) is advocated. The origination model includes trade integration, the common market, the economic union represented by monetary arrangement as well as community arrangement. Next, some empirical cases of classical regional integration to test the origination model are given. Finally, some conclusions are drawn that organizational framework of regional integration for heterogeneous structural members based on trade integration could sufficiently explain the trade practice in East Asia.

        Effect of Electric Field-Assisted Heat Treatment on Microstructure and Phase Transformation of Zrtialv Alloy

        The electric field-assisted (EFA) heat treatment is proposed to solve the problem of excessive grain growth of β phase duringthe heat treatment of ZrTiAlV alloy. The effect of the EFA heat treatment process on the phase transformation and microstructureof the as-forged and severe plastic deformation (SPD) alloys are studied. For the as-forged 47Zr alloy, the pure βphase can be obtained by holding at 700 °C for 5 min. After SPD, the increase in defect concentration in the alloy reducesthe effectiveness of the EFA heat treatment, and required an extension of the holding time to 15 min to obtain a pure β phase. Furthermore, a new mechanism for the transition of needle-like α phase to β phase is proposed. Dislocations in the β-phasematrix shear the needle-like α phase, resulting in the formation of a large number of stacking faults inside it, which are thentransformed into the β phase through atomic plane slippage.

        A New Single Nucleotide Polymorphism in the IGF-I Gene and Its Association with Growth Traits in the Nanjiang Huang Goat

        The objectives of this study were to identify polymorphisms of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) gene and to investigate their association with growth traits in Nanjiang Huang goats. Five hundred and ninety-two animals were used to detect the polymorphisms in the complete coding sequence, part of introns and the 5'-regulatory region of the IGF-I gene by means of PCR-SSCP. A new single nucleotide polymorphism (G to C transversion) was identified at intron 4 of the IGF-I gene in the goats. Two alleles and three genotypes were observed in this group. The frequency of G and C alleles was 54.6 and 45.4%, respectively. The statistical analysis showed that polymorphism of the IGF-I gene had a significant association (p<0.05) with birth weight (BW), body weight at 6 months (W6) and at 12 months (W12), heart girth at 2 months (G2), body length at 6 months (L6), wither height at 6 months (H6) and at 12 months (H12) and heart girth at 12 months (G12). The goats with genotype CC had significantly higher BW, W6, W12, G2, L6, H6, H12 and G12 than those with genotype GC and had significantly higher W12, H6, H12 and G12 than those with genotype GG. Therefore, genotype CC may be the most advantageous for growth traits in the Nanjiang Huang goat. However, no significant association between SNP genotypes and other growth traits was observed. These results indicated that the SNP marker of the IGF-I gene may be a potential molecular marker for growth traits in Nanjiang Huang goats.

        Combined Application Effects of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi and Biochar on the Rhizosphere Fungal Community of Allium fistulosum L.

        Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are widespread soil endophytic fungi, forming mutualistic relationships with the vast majority of land plants. Biochar (BC) has been reported to improve soil fertility and promote plant growth. However, limited studies are available concerning the combined effects of AMF and BC on soil community structure and plant growth. In this work, a pot experiment was designed to investigate the effects of AMF and BC on the rhizosphere microbial community of Allium fistulosum L. Using Illumina high-throughput sequencing, we showed that inoculation of AMF and BC had a significant impact on soil microbial community composition, diversity, and versatility. Increases were observed in both plant growth (the plant height by 8.6%, shoot fresh weight by 12.1%) and root morphological traits (average diameter by 20.5%). The phylogenetic tree also showed differences in the fungal community composition in A. fistulosum. In addition, Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) effect size (LEfSe) analysis revealed that 16 biomarkers were detected in the control (CK) and AMF treatment, while only 3 were detected in the AMF + BC treatment. Molecular ecological network analysis showed that the AMF + BC treatment group had a more complex network of fungal communities, as evidenced by higher average connectivity. The functional composition spectrum showed significant differences in the functional distribution of soil microbial communities among different fungal genera. The structural equation model (SEM) confirmed that AMF could improve the microbial multifunctionality by regulating the rhizosphere fungal diversity and soil properties. Our findings provide new information on the effects of AMF and biochar on plants and soil microbial communities.
