Development of Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) resistant Flue-cured $\textrm{F}_1$ Hybrid, KF118

        Chung, Yun-Hwa,Keum, Wan-Soo,Park, Sang-Ju,Jung, Suk-Hum,Kim, Yong-Am,Kang, Yue-Gyu,Chung, Youl-Young,Cho, Soo-Heon The Korean Society of Crop Science 2003 Korean journal of crop science Vol.48 No.5

Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), TMV-common strain, causes severe damage at growth, yield and leaf quality on flue-cured tobacco in Korea. Controlling TMV outbreak with cultivating practices and chemicals are limited, thus, the best way would be developing TMV resistant variety. A new flue-cured hybrid, KF118, was developed from a cross of maternal parent MSTC175 and TC853 at the Agro-tech. Research Group, KT&G Central Research Institute. KF118 exhibited more vigorous growth characteristics in early stage than that of NC82, standard variety in Korea, while other characters were favorable to those of NC82, It is highly resistant to TMV and bacterial wilt(Ral-stonia solanacerum), and black shank(phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae) is comparable to that of NC82. It should adapt well to the flue-cured production area, and can reduce premature flowering under unfavorable weather conditions. Yield of KF118 is 1 to 2% higher, and leaf quality is 4% higher than NC82. Fl hybrid, KF118, met acceptable standards for chemical and physical characteristics of cured leaf, and ranked high in good smoking taste by panel members in KT&G.

        Spider Invasion Across the Galaxy

Chung-Yue Hui 한국우주과학회 2014 Journal of Astronomy and Space Sciences Vol.31 No.2

The nature of the exotic stellar corpses which reincarnate by consuming their companion is reviewed. Apart from sucking life from their partners, they are actually eating the doomed companions away by their deadly and powerful particle/radiation beams. Such situation resembles that a female “black widow” spider that eats its mate after mating. These celestial zombies are called - Millisecond pulsars (MSPs). In this review article, I will focus on the effort of Fermi Asian Network (FAN) in exploring these intricating objects over the last five years. Two special classes of MSPs are particularly striking. Since Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has started surveying the gamma-ray sky, the population of “black widows” has been boosted. Another dramatic class is so-called “redbacks” (Australian cousin of “black widows”) which has just emerged in the last few years. These MSPs provide us with a long-sought missing link in understanding the transition between accretion-powered and rotation-powered systems. The strategy of hunting MSPs through mulitwavelength observations of the unidentified Fermi objects is also reviewed.

A GOLDEN DECADE OF GAMMA-RAY PULSAR ASTRONOMY

Chung-Yue Hui 한국천문학회 2018 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.51 No.6

To celebrate the tenth anniversary since the launch of {\it Fermi} Gamma-ray Space Telescope, we take a retrospect to a series of breakthroughs {\it Fermi} has contributed to pulsar astronomy in the last decade. Apart from significantly enlarging the population of $\gamma-$ray pulsars, observations with the Large Area Telescope onboard {\it Fermi} also show the population is not homogeneous. Instead, many classes and sub-classes have been revealed. In this paper, we will review the properties of different types of $\gamma-$ray pulsars, including radio-quiet $\gamma-$ray pulsars, millisecond pulsars, $\gamma-$ray binaries. Also, we will discuss the prospects of pulsar astronomy in the high energy regime.

High Energy Observational Investigations of Supernova Remnants and their Interactions with Surroundings

Hui, Chung-Yue 한국우주과학회 2013 Journal of Astronomy and Space Sciences Vol.30 No.3

Here we review the effort of Fermi Asian Network (FAN) in exploring the supernova remnants (SNRs) with state-of-art high energy observatories, including Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory, in the period of 2011- 2012. Utilizing the data from Fermi LAT, we have discovered the GeV emission at the position of the Galactic SNR Kes 17 which provides evidence for the hadronic acceleration. Our study also sheds light on the propagation of cosmic rays from their acceleration site to the intersteller medium. We have also launched an identification campaign of SNR candidates in the Milky Way, in which a new SNR G308.3-1.4 have been uncovered with our Chandra observation. Apart from the remnant, we have also discovered an associated compact object at its center. The multiwavelength properties of this X-ray source suggest it can possibly be the compact binary that survived a supernova explosion.

      • Mortality Related to Extreme Temperature for 15 Cities in Northeast Asia

        Chung, Yeonseung,Lim, Youn-Hee,Honda, Yasushi,Guo, Yue-Liang Leon,Hashizume, Masahiro,Bell, Michelle L.,Chen, Bing-Yu,Kim, Ho Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. All rights reserved. 2015 Epidemiology Vol.26 No.2

BACKGROUND:: Multisite time-series studies for temperature-related mortality have been conducted mainly in the United States and Europe, but are lacking in Asia. This multisite time-series study examined mortality related to extreme temperatures (both cold and hot) in Northeast Asia, focusing on 15 cities of 3 high-income countries. METHODS:: This study includes 3 cities in Taiwan for 1994–2007, 6 cities in Korea for 1992–2010, and 6 cities in Japan for 1972–2009. We used 2-stage Bayesian hierarchical Poisson semiparametric regression to model the nonlinear relationship between temperature and mortality, providing city-specific and country-wide estimates for cold and heat effects. Various exposure time frames, age groups, and causes of death were considered. RESULTS:: Cold effects had longer time lags (5–11 days) than heat effects, which were immediate (1–3 days). Cold effects were larger for cities in Taiwan, whereas heat effects were larger for cities in Korea and Japan. Patterns of increasing effects with age were observed in both cold and heat effects. Both cold and heat effects were larger for cardiorespiratory mortality than for other causes of death. Several city characteristics related to weather or air pollution were associated with both cold and heat effects. CONCLUSIONS:: Mortality increased with either cold or hot temperature in urban populations of high-income countries in Northeast Asia, with spatial variations of effects among cities and countries. Findings suggest that climate factors are major contributors to the spatial heterogeneity of effects in this region, although further research is merited to identify other factors as determinants of variability.

Relationship between the Population of Ralstonia solanacearum in Soil and the Incidence of Bacterial Wilt in the Naturally Infested Tobacco Fields

Chung, Yun-Hwa,Yu, Yun-Hyun,Kang, Yue-Gyu The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2004 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.20 No.4

The population of Ralstonia solanacearum (Rs) in soil is very important as a primary inoculum source of bacterial wilt in tobacco fields. To investigate the population of Rs, physical properties and chemical components during the tobacco growing season, soil samples were taken from the fifteen fields which were located in the flue-cured tobacco growing area, Ansung, Kyunggi province and Wonju, Kangwon province. Two fields of the fifteen were bacterial wilt free. Six fields had less than 10% plants being diseased and seven over 10%. The Rs population level determined by using SMSA medium generally showed an up-and-down pattern being low in May, high in Jun and July and low in August. The soil population in May and June showed a positive correlation with the incidence of bacterial wilt (r=0.571$^*$, r=0.688$^{**}$), but P$_2O_5$, content of soil was negatively correlated with the disease incidence (r=-0.539$^*$). These results suggest that Rs population in soil examined in May or in June, and the P$_2O_5$ content in soil should be key factors to determine the bacterial wilt potential of tobacco fields.
