The author investigated activities and events of the patients as well as diurnal and seasonal variation in the onset of aneurysmal rupture in 124 consecutive patients. The result showed that the onset of aneurysmal rupture was associated with nonactive state(sleep, rest) in 17.9%, working on job or house in 12.8%, bathing and/ or washing up in 7.2%. Diurnal variation of the onset of aneurysmal rupture showed two broad peak from 6 to 12 a. m. (32.2%) and from 7 to 11 p. m. (24.1%). The seasonal variation of onset of aneurysmal rupture showed the large peak in from late winter to early spring. The 22.6% patients rebleeded after initial bleeding, the first day rebleeding rate is 17.9% and rebleeding in a week is 71.4%. We concluded that onset of the aneurysmal rupture is related not only to physiol ogical circadian periodicity of blood pressure change but also to the activities or event which induced a sharp rising blood pressure and changing the venous and cerebrospinal fluid pressure.
Deer Bone Extract Prevents Against Scopolamine-Induced Memory Impairment in Mice

Deer bone has been used as a health-enhancing food as well as an antiaging agent in traditional Oriental medicine. Recently, the water extract of deer bone (DBE) showed a neuroprotective action against glutamate or Aβ1–42-induced cell death of mouse hippocampal cells by exerting antioxidant activity through the suppression of MAP kinases. The present study is to examine whether DBE improves memory impairment induced by scopolamine. DBE (50, 100 or 200mg/kg) was administered orally to mice for 14 days, and then scopolamine (2 mg/kg, i.p.) was administered together with DBE for another 7 days. Memory performance was evaluated in the Morris water maze (MWM) test and passive avoidance test. Also, brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activity, biomarkers of oxidative stress and the loss of neuronal cells in the hippocampus, was evaluated by histological examinations. Administration of DBE significantly restored memory impairments induced by scopolamine in the MWM test (escape latency and number of crossing platform area), and in the passive avoidance test. Treatment with DBE inhibited the AChE activity and increased the ChAT activity in the brain of memory-impaired mice induced by scopolamine. Additionally, the administration of DBE significantly prevented the increase of lipid peroxidation and the decrease of glutathione level in the brain of mice treated with scopolamine. Also, the DBE treatment restored the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase to control the level. Furthermore, scopolamine-induced oxidative damage of neurons in hippocampal CA1 and CA3 regions were prevented by DBE treatment. It is suggested that DBE may be useful for memory improvement through the regulation of cholinergic marker enzyme activities and the suppression of oxidative damage of neurons in the brain of mice treated with scopolamine.

The yellow tea thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), has recently become one of the key pests causing economic damage to the fruit production of mango (Mangifera indica L.). In this study, we investigated the seasonal fluctuation of S. dorsalis populations using data mining techniques inwhich logistic regression (LR), decision tree (DT), and artificial neural networks (ANNs) were performed for cross analysis and the optimality of these three approaches. Subsequently, crucial factors that affect the population dynamics of S. dorsalis can be determined. Our results showed correctly classified instances of DT ≧ 83% by 10-fold cross-validation, which exhibited the highest degree of accuracy among the three methods followed by ANNs and LR.We anticipate that using an intelligent prediction model can increase prediction reliability to understand the occurrence and population dynamics of S. dorsalis under different environmental conditions. Therefore, our model could be useful for farmers to implement control measures against S. dorsalis and to manage its damages to plants. Furthermore, the model proposed can be used as a basis for assessing pesticide applications and for reducing excessive pesticide costs.

The bulk inversion asymmetry (Dresselhaus) terms (i.e., B2, B1, and B01 terms) of wurtzite materials are determined. The 2 × 2 conduction band, 2 × 2 heavy-hole band, 2 × 2 light-hole band,and 2 × 2 crystal-field split-off hole band matrices of wurtzite semiconductors are developed and decoupled by using a block diagonal technique. Importantly, those 2 × 2 block diagonal matrices incorporate not only the interband coupling effect but also the bulk inversion asymmetry effect. Analytical expressions for the conduction and the valence band spin-splitting parameters and energies of GaN wurtzite materials are formulated by solving the block diagonal matrices. Optical Properties of K9 Glass Waveguides Fabricated by Using Carbon-Ion Implantation

K9 glass is a material with promising properties that make it attractive for optical devices. Ion implantation is a powerful technique to form waveguides with controllable depth and refractive index profile. In this work, optical planar waveguide structures were fabricated in K9 glasses by using 6.0-MeV C3+-ion implantation with a fluence of 1.0 × 1015 ions/cm2. The effective refractive indices of the guided modes were measured by using a prism-coupling system. The refractive index change in the ion-irradiated region was simulated by using the intensity calculation method. The modal intensity profile of the waveguide was calculated and measured by using the finite difference beam propagation method and the end-face coupling technique, respectively. The transmission spectra before and after the implantation showed that the main absorption band was not influenced by the low fluence dopants. The optical properties of the carbon-implanted K9 glass waveguides show promise for use as integrated photonic devices.
