Highly monodisperse carbon-supported palladium nanoparticles with controllable size (3 nm, 6.5 nm, 9.5nm) were prepared using a simple colloidal method, and the size dependence of the catalytic performance for the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide from hydrogen and oxygen was studied. Smaller-sized supported palladium nanoparticles showed both higher conversion of hydrogen and selectivity for hydrogen peroxide, compared to larger-sized supported particles. Among the catalysts tested, 3-nm Pd nanoparticles supported on carbon showed the highest yield for hydrogen peroxide because of the small size and high crystallinity.
Effects of catalyst on the super-growth of multi-walled carbon nanotubes.
Kim, Hyeongkeun,Chun, Kyoung-Yong,Choi, Jaeboong,Kim, Youngjin,Baik, Seunghyun American Scientific Publishers 2010 Journal of nanoscience and nanotechnology Vol.10 No.5

We investigated the effects of catalyst (Fe)/buffer layer (Al2O3) on the vertical growth multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) synthesized by thermal chemical vapor deposition. The Fe was deposited onto Al2O3/SiO2/Si wafer by using e-beam evaporator. Ethylene was used as a feeding gas while argon was used as a carrier gas. Hydrogen was also introduced. The catalyst layers were optimized to control the length, diameter, purity, and alignment of CNTs. For the optimized conditions we produced vertically aligned CNTs of about 1 cm in length during 10 h. The effects of catalysts on nanotube characteristics were systematically analyzed using SEM, TEM, and Raman measurement.

The number of pest detection in wooden pellets has increased since wooden pellets as biomass-solid refuse fuel (Bio-SRF) was allowed an import in Korea. In this study, we analyzed an insecticidal effect on pupal and adult stages of red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) and maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais) in wooden pellets using two fumigants, methyl bromide (MB) and phosphine (PH3), for establishing a guideline on fumigation. MB and PH3 both showed a dose-dependent manner in insect mortality after fumigation under 60% filing rate (FR) of wooded pellets in desiccator. In MB fumigation to T. castaneum, adults and pupae showed 100% mortality at 128 mg/L and 161 mg/L in 10°C at 24 h post treatment and pupae showed 100, 74, and 8% mortality against 99 mg/L of MB in 20, 40, and 40% FR, respectively. In PH3 fumigation, S. zeamais adults showed 92% mortality to 4 mg/L, meanwhile T. castaneum adults showed 100% mortality at 120 h post treatment.

As preventive measures for bonsai exports, nematodes were isolated from 55 bonsai samples of five coniferous species (Chamaecyparis pisifera, Juniperus chinensis, Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii, and Taxus cuspidate) from all 15 bonsai gardens in Korea. Nematodes belonging to 21 genera in 7 orders were isolated from the 55 bonsai samples. Among plant-parasitic nematodes, Tylenchus spp. was the most frequently isolated (14.9%), followed by Ditylenchus spp. (10.5%), Aphelenchoides spp. (9.5%), Aphelenchus sp. (5.5%), Criconemoides sp. (4.0%), Helicotylenchus sp. (0.7%), Hemicycliophora sp. (0.7%), Mesocriconema sp. (0.7%), Tylenchorhynchus sp. (0.7%), and Paratylenchus sp. (0.4%). Among nonparasitic nematodes, Cephalobina was the most frequently isolated nematodes (26.5%), followed by Rhabditida (19.3%), Dorylaimida (17.8%), Pangrolaimida (14.5%), Plectida (6.5%), Tryphylida (6.2%), Mononchida (3.3%), Alaimida (2.9%), Monhysterida (2.5%), and Triplonchida (0.4%). Based on these results, we conclude that there is no problematic plant-parasitic nematode in bonsai gardens of Korea.
