        Fracture property of steel fiber reinforced concrete at early age

        This research is focused on obtaining the fracture property of steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) specimens at early ages of 1, 2, 3 and 7-day, respectively. For this purpose, three point bending tests of nine groups of SFRC beams with notch of 40mm depth and different steel fiber ratios were conducted. The experimental results of early age specimens were compared with the 28-day hardened SFRC specimens. The test results indicated that the steel fiber ratios and curing age significantly influenced the fracture properties of SFRC. A reasonable addition of steel fiber improved the fracture toughness of SFRC, while the fracture energy of SFRC developed with curing age. Moreover, a quadratic relationship between splitting strength and fracture toughness was established based on the experiment results. Additionally, afinite element (FE) method was used to investigate the fracture properties of SFRC.A comparison between the FE analysis and experiment results was also made. The numerical analysis fitted well with the test results, and further details on the failure behaviors of SFRC could be revealed by the suggested numerical simulation method.

      • Bioinformatic Prediction of SNPs within miRNA Binding Sites of Inflammatory Genes Associated with Gastric Cancer

        Polymorphisms in miRNA binding sites have been shown to affect miRNA binding to target genes, resulting in differential mRNA and protein expression and susceptibility to common diseases. Our purpose was to predict SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) within miRNA binding sites of inflammatory genes in relation to gastric cancer. A complete list of SNPs in the 3'UTR regions of all inflammatory genes associated with gastric cancer was obtained from Pubmed. miRNA target prediction databases (MirSNP, Targetscan Human 6.2, PolymiRTS 3.0, miRNASNP 2.0, and Patrocles) were used to predict miRNA target sites. There were 99 SNPs with MAF>0.05 within the miRNA binding sites of 41 genes among 72 inflammation-related genes associated with gastric cancer. NF-${\kappa}B$ and JAK-STAT are the two most important signaling pathways. 47 SNPs of 25 genes with 95 miRNAs were predicted. CCL2 and IL1F5 were found to be the shared target genes of hsa-miRNA-624-3p. Bioinformatic methods could identify a set of SNPs within miRNA binding sites of inflammatory genes, and provide data and direction for subsequent functional verification research.

      • The CHEK2 I157T Variant and Breast Cancer Susceptibility: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

        Background: The cell cycle checkpoint kinase 2 (CHEK2) gene I157T variant may be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, but it is unclear whether the evidence is sufficient to recommend testing for the mutation in clinical practice. Materials and Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Elsevier and Springer for relevant articles published before Nov 2011. Summary odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) incidence rates were calculated using a random-effects model with STATA (version 10.0) software. Results: A total of fifteen case-control studies, including 19,621 cases and 27,001 controls based on the search criteria, were included for analysis. A significant association was found between carrying the CHEK2 I157T variant and increased risk of unselected breast cancer (OR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.31-1.66, P < 0.0001), familial breast cancer (OR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.16-1.89, P < 0.0001), and early-onset breast cancer (OR = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.29-1.66, P < 0.0001). We found an even stronger significant association between the CHEK2 I157T C variant and increased risk of lobular type breast tumors (OR = 4.17, 95% CI = 2.89-6.03, P < 0.0001). Conclusion: Our research indicates that the CHEK2 I157T variant may be another important genetic mutation which increases risk of breast cancer, especially the lobular type.

      • The CHEK2 I157T Variant and Colorectal Cancer Susceptibility: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

        Background: The cell cycle checkpoint kinase 2 (CHEK2) gene I157T variant may be associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer, but it is unclear whether the evidence is sufficient to recommend testing for the mutation in clinical practice. Materials and Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, EMBASES, Elsevier and Springer for relevant articles before Apr 2012. Summary odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated using a fixed-effects or random-effects models with Review Manager 5.0 software. Results: A total of seven studies including 4,029 cases and 13,844 controls based on the search criteria were included for analysis. A significant association of the CHEK2 I157T C variant with unselected CRC was found (OR = 1.61, 95% CI = 1.40-1.87, P < 0.001). We also found a significant association with sporadic CRC (OR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.23-1.77, P < 0.001) and separately with familial CRC (OR = 1.97, 95% CI = 1.41-2.74, P < 0.001). Conclusion: This meta-analysis demonstrates that the CHEK2 I157T variant may be another important CRC-predisposing gene, which increases CRC risk, especially in familial CRC.

      • Association Between the XRCC3 T241M Polymorphism and Head and Neck Cancer Susceptibility: a Meta-analysis of Case-control Studies

        Background: To evaluate the role of the X-ray repair cross complementing group 3 (XRCC3) T241M polymorphism in head and neck cancer susceptibility. Materials and Methods: We performed a meta-analysis of all available studies, which included 3,191 cases and 5,090 controls. Results: Overall, a significant risk effect of the T241M polymorphism was not found under homologous contrast (MM vs TT: OR=1.293, 95% CI=0.926-1.805; TM vs TT: OR=1.148 95% CI=0.930-1.418) and recessive models (MM vs TT+TM): OR=1.170, 95% CI=0.905-1.512, but a significantly increased risk was observed under a dominant model (MM+TM vs TT): OR=1.243, 95% CI=1.001-1.544. In stratified analyses, there were no significant associations for Asians or Caucasians. Conclusion: Our meta-analysis suggested the XRCC3 241M allele (MM+TM) might act as a head and neck cancer risk factor among all subjects, and the effect of T241M polymorphism on head and neck susceptibility should be studied with a larger, stratified population.

        Dynamic behavior analysis of push-the-bit rotary steerable bottom hole assembly

        Rotary steerable drilling technology is currently an advanced technology in the field of drilling engineering. A good understanding of dynamic behavior of rotary steerable system will benefit the drilling progress. Aimed at push-the-bit type of rotary steerable tool, finite element method was employed to model the rotary steerable bottom hole assembly (RSBHA) and establish the motion equation. Contact interaction between drill string and wellbore wall was analyzed and taken as the constraint condition in solving RSBHA motion equation. Force applied by steering pads was as the external force acting at the pads node. Then RSBHA motion state and bit lateral force were obtained by using Newmark method to solve the motion equation. A case was given and effects of influencing factors were analyzed. The results show that stick-slip phenomenon occurs under 60 r/min rotary speed condition and disappears when rotary speed rises to 90 r/min. Fully developed backward whirl comes into being at the near-bit stabilizer when rotary speed increases to 120 r/min. High weight on bit intensifies bit torsional vibration while larger pads’ steering force decreases the bit torsional vibration. Upper stabilizer plays a part in weakening RSBHA backward whirl under high rotary speed condition but reduces the inclination force. Time average of bit lateral force is mainly determined by pads’ steering force. Based on the results, corresponding suggestions were proposed to make the RSBHA be better used in the field applications.

      • XPD Lys751Gln and Asp312Asn Polymorphisms and Gastric Cancer Susceptibility: A Meta-analysis of Case-control Studies

        Background: Published data regarding the association between xeroderma pigmentosum group D (XPD) Lys751Gln and Asp312Asn polymorphisms and gastric cancer susceptibility havew been inconclusive. This meta-analysis was therefore performed toobtain a more precise estimation of any relationship. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify all case-control studies of Lys751Gln and Asp312Asn polymorphisms and susceptibility to gastric cancer. Summary odds ratios (ORs) and its 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated using a random-effects model with the software STATA (version10.0). Results: A total of 12 case-control studies including 3,147 cases and 4,736 controls were included. Overall, no significant associations were found in some models (for Lys751Gln: Lys/Gln vs Lys/Lys: OR=1.144, 95% CI=0.851-1.541, Gln/Gln vs Lys/Lys: OR=1.215, 95% CI = 0.740-1.955, dominant model: OR=1.137, 95% CI=0.818-1.582; recessive model: OR=1.123, 95% CI=0.765-1.650; for Asp312Asn: Asp/Asn vs Asp/Asp: OR=1.180, 95% CI=0.646-2.154, dominant model: OR=1.380, 95% CI = 0.812-2.346), but significantly elevated susceptibility was found for Asp312Asn polymorphism in some models (Asn/Asn vs Asp/Asp: OR=2.045, 95% CI=1.254-3.335, recessive model: OR=1.805, 95% CI =1.219-2.672), for the additive model, the XPD Lys751Gln and Asp312Asn polymorphisms were not significantly associated with gastric cancer susceptibility. In stratified analyses, significantly elevated susceptibility was found for some models in the Chinese population. Conclusion: This meta-analysis suggested the XPD Asp312Asn polymorphism might be a potential biomarker of gastric cancer susceptibility in overall population, while both XPD Lys751Gln and Asp312Asn polymorphisms might be risk factors of gastric cancer susceptibility in Chinese.

        Output-Feedback Control of a Class of Stochastic Nonlinear Systems with Power Growth Conditions

        This paper investigates the problem of output-feedback stabilization for a class of stochastic nonlinear systems in which the nonlinear terms depend on unmeasurable states besides measurable input. We extend linear growth conditions to power growth conditions and reduce the control effort. By using backstepping technique, choosing a high-gain parameter, an output-feedback controller is designed to ensure the closed-loop system globally asymptotically stable in probability. The efficiency of the output-feedback controller is demonstrated by a simulation example.

        Abbreviated MRI Protocols for Detecting Breast Cancer in Women with Dense Breasts

        Objective: To evaluate the validity of two abbreviated protocols (AP) of MRI in breast cancer screening of dense breast tissue. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study in 356 participants with dense breast tissue and negative mammography results. The study was approved by the Nanjing Medical University Ethics Committee. Patients were imaged with a full diagnostic protocol (FDP) of MRI. Two APs (AP-1 consisting of the first post-contrast subtracted [FAST] and maximum-intensity projection [MIP] images, and AP-2 consisting of AP-1 combined with diffusion-weighted imaging [DWI]) and FDP images were analyzed separately, and the sensitivities and specificities of breast cancer detection were calculated. Results: Of the 356 women, 67 lesions were detected in 67 women (18.8%) by standard MR protocol, and histological examination revealed 14 malignant lesions and 53 benign lesions. The average interpretation time of AP-1 and AP-2 were 37 seconds and 54 seconds, respectively, while the average interpretation time of the FDP was 3 minutes and 25 seconds. The sensitivities of the AP-1, AP-2, and FDP were 92.9, 100, and 100%, respectively, and the specificities of the three MR protocols were 86.5, 95.0, and 96.8%, respectively. There was no significant difference among the three MR protocols in the diagnosis of breast cancer (p > 0.05). However, the specificity of AP-1 was significantly lower than that of AP-2 (p = 0.031) and FDP (p = 0.035), while there was no difference between AP-2 and FDP (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The AP may be efficient in the breast cancer screening of dense breast tissue. FAST and MIP images combined with DWI of MRI are helpful to improve the specificity of breast cancer detection.

        Two New Triterpenoid Acids from Kadsura coccinea

        An investigation of EtOAc extracts of Kadsura coccinea (Lem.) A. C. Smith, has led to the isolation of two new compounds characterized as 3-hydroxy-12-hydroxyl coccinic acid (1) and 3-hydroxy-neokadsuranic acid A (2). Their structures were established by 1D and 2D NMR techniques and mass spectroscopy. Antiproliferative effects of the isolated compounds were evaluated against four human tumor cell lines (A549, HCT116, HL-60 and HepG2), and it was found that compound 1 exhibited antiproliferative effects with IC50 values ranging from 3.01 to 18.08 μg/mL.
