In this study, conductive polymer composites and conductive functional fabrics are combined to serve aselectromagnetic shielding planks. Polypropylene (PP), carbon black (CB), and short carbon fibers (SCF) are blended atdifferent ratios to form conductive polymer composites (i.e. PCS series). The mechanical property, electrical property, morphology, and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of the PCS series are evaluated. The testresults show that with 20 wt% of conductive fillers (i.e. CB and SCF), PCS20 exhibits the optimal tensile strength, flexuralstrength, and electrical property that is 7 order of magnitude higher than that of pure PP plates. Moreover, the EMI SE of thisgroup also reaches -30 dB, which meets level one of civil EMI SE standard. Therefore, PCS20 is used to combine with fourconductive sandwiches. The resulting multilayered functional PCS-sandwich planks are tested in terms of mechanicalproperty, morphology, and EMI SE. The test results show that the planks composed of a pure conductive woven sandwichhave the maximum tensile property and significantly improved impact resistance. All of the multilayered functional plankshave EMI SE that is higher than -50 dB and are qualified for the protection level of standard EMI SE electronic devices.
Survive the climate variability?

Climate and its variability characterize abiotic environment for species on the earth. Increased seasonality in higher latitude and/or pronounced diurnal temperate range in higher ground as well as decreasing mean temperature are major climate gradients to which organisms must adapt through physiological and behavioral plasticity. IPCC AR5 pointed out that climate variability and its regional behavior remain top concerns, which may well pose great challenges to climate change biology. We use Nicrophorus nepalensis (Coleoptera: Silphidae) a wide-distributed burying beetle in low latitude Asia as model species to investigate possible impacts of climate variability on species performance. N. nepalensis is a scavenging species exploring carcasses for feeding and reproduction. To consider their breeding performance, we baited N. nepalensis by small mouse carcasses and measured the rate at which they successfully buried the carcasses into soil. We look at climate variability along elevational gradients of intact forest and open habitats exposure to agricultural activities. The probability of successful breeding is higher in intact forest than that in open habitat with unimodal fashion of peak at 1800m. We found that local climate variability, more specifically, the diurnal temperature range (DTR), impedes successful breeding of N. nepalensis. Despite variable environmental conditions associated with habitat opening, such as increased soil density, reduced leaf litter amount and relative humidity, enlarged DTR seems to be the principal cause of failure. The negative effects of greater DTR on breeding success were confirmed by laboratory experiments. DTR remains stable in primary forests, in contrast to its increase in more disrupted habitats along the same transect. Reducing vegetation cover exposes mountains to radiant heating, a trend with significant elevational effect, resulting in large DTR in high lands. Although N. nepalensis is widely distributed in the mountain areas, non-forest patches support only part of their life cycle, different function groups to support decomposition process at open habitats are expected. Climate change and habitat degradation are among the major drivers of biodiversity loss. Our study highlights land-use and land-cover change (LULCC) in altering local temperature variability and reinforces the concern of its interplay with climate change.
A Theory Thermal Growth Control Techniques of High Speed Spindles
Chang,Ching-Feng,Ling,Chao-Shui,Chao, Ching-Yi,Chen, Jin-Jia,Chen,Tsair-Rong 제어로봇시스템학회 2008 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2008 No.10
A motorized high speed spindle has very complicated dynamics consisting of non-stationary and speed-related thermal characteristics. Many studies have been reported with different designs to control or monitor spindle’s thermal growth with limited results, whereas the application of High Speed Machining (HSM) demands “zero tolerance”no matter the range of speed or material to be machined. This paper proposes a direct displacement measuring system, which is a considerable improvement as compared with many taking inaccurate readings through a traditional thermo coupler, to accurately monitor and compensate the thermal growth associated with motorized high speed spindles. This direct displacement measuring system optimizing a high speed synchronous feedback system will meet the tolerance and performance expected in HSM applications. Based on the introduction of Foucault current, a design for an accurate thermal growth is outlined.

Background/Aims: Growth hormone (GH) is the main regulator of somatic growth, metabolism, and gender dimorphism in the liver. GH receptor (GHR) signaling in cancer is derived from a large body of evidence, although the GHR signaling pathway involved in the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related HCC, remains unclear. We aimed to explore the expression of GHR and analyze its association with clinicopathologic features and prognosis of patients with chronic hepatitis C and HCC. Methods: The expression of GHR mRNA was investigated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction in paired tumors and adjacent non-tumorous (ANT) liver tissues of 200 patients with chronic hepatitis C and HCC. Western blotting and immunofluorescence assays using the HCV-infected Huh7.5.1 cell model was performed. Results: GHR mRNA was significantly lower in HCV-HCC tissues than in corresponding ANT liver tissues. GHR mRNA and protein levels also decreased in the HCV-infected Huh7.5.1 cell model. Notably, lower GHR expression was associated with age of >60 years (P=0.0111) and worse clinicopathologic characteristics, including alpha-fetoprotein >100 ng/mL (P=0.0403), cirrhosis (P=0.0075), vascular invasion (P=0.0052), pathological stage II-IV (P=0.0002), and albumin ≤4.0 g/dL (P=0.0055), which were linked with poor prognosis of HCC. Most importantly, the high incidence of recurrence and poor survival rates in patients with a low ratio of tumor/ANT GHR (≤0.1) were observed, indicating that low expression levels of GHR had great risk for development of HCC in patients with chronic hepatitis C. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates a significant down-regulation of GHR expression as a new unfavorable independent prognostic factor in patients with chronic hepatitis C and HCC. Assessing multidimensional students’ perceptions of twenty-first-century learning practices
Ching Sing Chai,Feng Deng,Pei-Shan Tsai,Joyce Hwee Ling Koh,Chin-Chung Tsai 서울대학교 교육연구소 2015 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.16 No.3
This study attempts to design a survey to assess students’ perceptions of twenty-first-century learning practices in their classrooms and the resulting knowledge creation self-efficacy among the students. In addition, it also explores the relationships among the various dimensions of twenty-first-century learning practices. Four hundred and eighty-two primary school students from a Singapore school that focuses on the pervasive use of ICT within its school curriculum responded to the survey. The validation of the survey yielded satisfactory reliability and validity through both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The results also showed that the subscales that survey students’ perceptions of critical thinking, creative thinking, and authentic problem-solving were more dominant predictors of their knowledge creation efficacy as compared to their perceptions about the learning processes.

This study investigates the similarities and differences between high school students from Taiwan and China in terms of their scientific epistemological views. In addition, the effects of age and gender on scientific epistemological views were also examined. The results indicate that the students from these two localities, which signify two similar yet different cultures, are substantially different in five out of the six dimensions. Age and gender were also found to have significant effects in some dimensions. Implications for future research were discussed at the end of the paper.
Indirect Adaptive Nonlinear Self-Balancing and Station Keeping for Omnidirectional Riding Chair
Ching-Chih Tsai,Yi-Ping Ciou,Feng-Chun Tai,Hsiao-Lang Wu 제어로봇시스템학회 2014 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2014 No.10
This paper presents indirect adaptive self-balancing and station keeping control methods using recurrent Wavelet Fuzzy CMAC (RWFCMAC) for an omnidirectional ball-driven chair in presence of significant system uncertainties. By backstepping, sliding-mode control and RWFCMAC, the self-balancing controller is synthesized to follow the rider’s inclination angles in both two axes (x-z and y-z axis), and the station-keeping controller is designed to allow the rider to maintain the vehicle at the same place. The RWFCMAC is designed to online learning the uncertainties caused by riders’ weights and different unknown frictions between the ball and terrain surfaces. The superior performance and merit of the proposed control methods are well exemplified by comparing to two existing controllers.

DUAL BAND DIPOLE-LOADED NOTCH ANTENNA
Ching-Lieh Li,Chun-Feng Wen,Ya-Kuan Ling 대한전자공학회 2008 ITC-CSCC :International Technical Conference on Ci Vol.2008 No.7
This paper presents a dipole-loaded notch antenna designed for the operation of the dual-band WLAN application. The antenna structure starts with a quarter-wavelength slit cut on a ground plane with suitable addition of a planar wire dipole connected to the open ends of the notch. The monopole notch is designed to radiate at the low frequency band, 2.4 ㎓ for IEEE 802.11b/g, while the planar wire dipole is responsible for the other band, 5.2/5.8 ㎓ for IEEE 802.11a. It is found that the wire dipole has the side effect of reducing the slit length due to its capacitive loading effect at the low frequency band. The parametric study is performed to demonstrate the characteristics of the proposed antenna, from which the guidelines for the design of the proposed antenna are provided.
