This study derives numerical procedure which calculate optimum weight of steel Rahmen using a plastic moment distribution method. The optimum design values obtained by this procedure are compard with the results of references. As a result, it is found that this numerical procedure is economical in the initial design, because the results can be calculated by the calculator.

Seismic inelastic analysis was carried out to braced and non-braced fifteen-story steel frame designed based on SC-WB concept. EI Centro ground motion was applied with peak ground acceleration 02.g. 0.3g and 0.4g. Step by step integration method was used to solve dynamic equilibrium. The result of dynamic inelastic analysis in the case of 04.g was compared with that of elastic analysis. By the comparison of the linear elastic analysis and inelastic analysis, relatively smaller displacement in the case of inelastic analysis than linear elastic analysis was found and the fact that the formation of the plastic hinge has the effects of stress dispersion make economical design possible at the strong earthqauke.

Most of building structures are designed on the basis of the strong - column weak-beam (SCWB) concept that can tolerate large inelastic deformation without failure under strong ground motions. In this study the five-story, the ten-story and the fifteen-story steel frames with three bays are designed on the basis of the SCWB concept and the dynamic inelastic behavior and failure modes of the frames were studied when they were subjected to the different seismic loading.

Current confinement requirments for larger diameter columns can result in unacceptable congestion and poor connection between core and cover concrete as a result of close-spaced large diameter spirals. Two columns HS4 and HS5 was made for psudo-static testing.HS4 was a reference column conventionally reinforced with Grade 60 spirals, and was built in concert with HS5 so that commonalty of matrials would provide a firm basis for comparison. HS5 was trasversely reinforced with 6.2 mm diameter 7-wire low-relaxation prestressing stand with a nominal yield of 1,376 Mpa(14,028 kg/cm²)and a nominal ultimate strength of 1,860 MPa(18,962kg/cm²).HS5 was designed to have eqivalent strain energy with HS4. It was evident from the observed and recorded behavior of HS5 that the specified amount of transverse reinforcement increased the displacement ductility capacity by 25%, albeit by forcing some damage into the footing. At moderate levels of ductility (μ=4 and μ=6), damage to the steel was almost nil though some yielding had of course occurred, and the column would have been easily repairable. This was not the case for HS4;at μ=6 it was near the limit of its displacement capacity. As a result using of high strength strand spirals in reinforced conrete column was effective to increase ductility level by decreased spiral steel ratio.

Three compartment stool tank system was established in March, 1965 to each of the houses . of Yongheungri, Cheju-do. The trend of parasites prevalence, faithfulness of the people to paractice the system and effectiveness of the system for destruction of ascaris eggs were examined. 1. Only 22 houses among 65 utilized the system for 3 years. The remained 43, gave up to practice; 10 because of the destruction of the cemented tank and 33 due to the shortage of. food stuffs, for hogs. In this island, the people have been raised hogs with human excrets. 2. The prevalence of ascaris infection in the village and in Sinwom-ri, a control village where the human feces were used as food stuffs for hog, were as follows: Yongheung(%) Sinwom(%) March 1965 before medication 52.0 43.0 Dec. 1965 after medication 15.1 21.2 Feb. 1968 22.7 30.8 3. Ascaris eggs in the 3rd compartment, were destroyed 94-100%, whereas the eggs in semi-formed feces in hog sty survived 94%.

The formulation of the geometric optimization for truss structures based on the elasticity theory turns out to be the ncnlinear programming problem which has to deal with the cross-sectional area of the member and the coordinates of its nodes simul-taneously. A few techniques have been proposed and adapted for the analysis of this nonlinear programming for the time being. These techniques, however, bear some limitation on truss shapes, loading condition and design criteria for the practical application to real structures. A generalized algorithm for the geometric optimization of the truss structures, which can eliminate the above mentioned limitations, is developed in this study. The algorithm developed utilizes the two-phases technique. In the first phase. the cross-sectional area of the truss member is optimized by geometric programming method. In the second phase, the geometric shape is optimized utilizing the unidirectional search technique of the Powell method which make it possible to minimize only the objective function. The algorithm developed in this study is numerically tested for two truss structures and compared with the results of other algorithms to examine its applicability and stability. The numerical comparison show that the two-phases algorithm developed in this study is safely applicable to design, and the convergency rate is fast and stable compared with other iteration methods for the geometric optimization of truss structures.

An optimal design of Rahmen structure is performed based on plastic theory by the dual problem. The Computer program is derived for the personal computer, and applicability and propriety of the program is investigated through the two example Rahmen structures. As a result, it is found that this program can be effectively used for the optimal design of simple Rahmen structure especially for the pre-design process.

This paper presents an optimization algorithm for the reinforced concrete T-beam section by the Lagrange multiplier optimization method. The efficiency of this algorithm is checked by comparing the computed results with those of the conventional method. The algorithm is easily accessible to practical optimal structural design in Korea for cost reduction.
