Effects of A Short-term Cardio Tai Chi Program on Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Hemodynamic Parameters in Sedentary Adults: A Pilot Study

Timothy Sam-Kit Tin,Chi-Hsiu Daniel Weng,Patricia dos Santos Vigário,Arthur de Sá Ferreira 사단법인약침학회 2020 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.13 No.1

This study evaluates the effects of a short-term Cardio Tai Chi program on the cardiorespiratory fitness and hemodynamic parameters in sedentary adults. Thirty-one sedentary participants (age: 58 Æ 9 years, body mass: 63 Æ 12 kg) were subjected to an exercise program during 10 sessions over a 10-day period within 2 weeks. The Cardio Tai Chi program consisted in a series of three to five intervals lasting 90 s each at w70% maximal heart rate separated by 2-min of low-intensity recovery. Primary outcome measures were cardiorespiratory fitness (peak oxygen uptake, _ VO 2peak ) assessed by the Rockport walking test and resting hemodynamic parameters (systolic, diastolic, mean, and pulse pressures). We observed a significant difference of means on post-pre _ VO 2peak [4.5 ml/kg/ min, 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.1 to 5.8, p Z 0.004], systolic blood pressure (-5.5 mmHg, 95% CI:-7.3 to -3.8, p Z 0.010) and pulse pressure (-3.7 mmHg, 95% CI: -5.2 to -2.3, p Z 0.028). No significant differences were observed for diastolic pressure (À1.8 mmHg, 95% CI: -2.6 to -1.0, p Z 0.226), mean blood pressure (2.5 mmHg, 95% CI: 1.4 to 3.6, p Z 0.302), or resting heart rate (-0.9 beat/min, 95% CI: -2.0 to 0.1, p Z 0.631). Our findings suggest that engaging in a short-term Cardio Tai Chi program can improve cardiorespiratory fitness and hemodynamic parameters in sedentary adults.

THE GLOBULAR CLUSTER SYSTEM OF THE COMA CD GALAXY NGC 4874 FROM<i>HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE</i>ACS AND WFC3/IR IMAGING

        Cho, Hyejeon,Blakeslee, John P.,Chies-Santos, Ana L.,Jee, M. James,Jensen, Joseph B.,Peng, Eric W.,Lee, Young-Wook American Astronomical Society 2016 The Astrophysical journal Vol.822 No.2

<P>We present new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry of the rich globular cluster (GC) system NGC 4874, the cD galaxy in the core of the Coma cluster (Abell 1656). NGC 4874 was observed with the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys in the F475W (g(475)) and F814W (I-814) passbands and with the Wide Field Camera. 3 IR Channel in F160W (H-160). The GCs in this field exhibit a bimodal optical color distribution with more than half of the GCs falling on the red side at g(475)-I-814 > 1. Bimodality is also present, though less conspicuously, in the optical-NIR I-814-H-160 color. Consistent with past work, we find evidence for nonlinearity in the g(475)-I-814 versus I-814-H-160 color-color relation. Our results thus underscore the need for understanding the detailed form of the color-metallicity relations in interpreting observational data on GC bimodality. We also find a very strong color-magnitude trend, or 'blue tilt,' for the blue component of the optical color distribution of the NGC 4874 GC system. A similarly strong trend is present for the overall mean I-814-H-160 color as a function of magnitude; for M-814 < -10 mag, these trends imply a steep mass-metallicity scaling with Z proportional to M-GC(1.4 +/- 0.4), but the scaling is not a simple power law and becomes much weaker at lower masses. As in other similar systems, the spatial distribution of the blue GCs is more extended than that of the red GCs, partly because of blue GCs associated with surrounding cluster galaxies. In addition, the center of the GC system is displaced by 4 +/- 1 kpc toward the southwest from the luminosity center of NGC 4874, in the direction of NGC 4872. Finally, we remark on a dwarf elliptical galaxy with a noticeably asymmetrical GC distribution. Interestingly, this dwarf has a velocity of nearly -3000 km s(-1) with respect to NGC 4874; we suggest it is on its first infall into the cluster core and is undergoing stripping of its GC system by the cluster potential.</P>

J-PLUS: Identification of low-metallicity stars with artificial neural networks using SPHINX

        Whitten, D. D.,Placco, V. M.,Beers, T. C.,Chies-Santos, A. L.,Bonatto, C.,Varela, J.,Cristó,bal-Hornillos, D.,Ederoclite, A.,Masseron, T.,Lee, Y. S.,Akras, S.,Borges Fernandes, M.,Caballero, J. Springer-Verlag 2019 Astronomy and astrophysics Vol.622 No.-

<P><I>Context.</I> We present a new methodology for the estimation of stellar atmospheric parameters from narrow- and intermediate-band photometry of the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS), and propose a method for target pre-selection of low-metallicity stars for follow-up spectroscopic studies. Photometric metallicity estimates for stars in the globular cluster M15 are determined using this method.</P><P><I>Aims.</I> By development of a neural-network-based photometry pipeline, we aim to produce estimates of effective temperature, <I>T</I>eff, and metallicity, [Fe/H], for a large subset of stars in the J-PLUS footprint.</P><P><I>Methods.</I> The Stellar Photometric Index Network Explorer, SPHINX, was developed to produce estimates of <I>T</I>eff and [Fe/H], after training on a combination of J-PLUS photometric inputs and synthetic magnitudes computed for medium-resolution (<I>R</I> ~ 2000) spectra of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This methodology was applied to J-PLUS photometry of the globular cluster M15.</P><P><I>Results.</I> Effective temperature estimates made with J-PLUS Early Data Release photometry exhibit low scatter, σ(<I>T</I>eff) = 91 K, over the temperature range 4500 < <I>T</I>eff (K) < 8500. For stars from the J-PLUS First Data Release with 4500 < <I>T</I>eff (K) < 6200, 85 ± 3% of stars known to have [Fe/H] < −2.0 are recovered by SPHINX. A mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = − 2.32 ± 0.01, with a residual spread of 0.3 dex, is determined for M15 using J-PLUS photometry of 664 likely cluster members.</P><P><I>Conclusions.</I> We confirm the performance of SPHINX within the ranges specified, and verify its utility as a stand-alone tool for photometric estimation of effective temperature and metallicity, and for pre-selection of metal-poor spectroscopic targets.</P>

Effects of Green and Ripe Coffee in the Metabolic Profile and Muscle Enzymes in Animals Practicing Physical Exercise

Henrique Bosso,Giovanna Emanuella Piffer Soares Arantes,Sandra Maria Barbalho,Elen Landgraf Guiguer,Maricelma da Silva Soares de Souza,Patrıcia Cincotto dos Santos Bueno,Agnaldo Bruno Chies,Priscilla 한국식품영양과학회 2019 Journal of medicinal food Vol.22 No.4

Many studies have shown that plants can be therapeutic alternatives in the prevention or treatment of various diseases. Among these, green coffee may present different pharmacological effects related to the regulation of glycemia and lipid metabolism and is related to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The objective of our study was to evaluate the effects of using green and ripe coffee on the metabolic profile and muscular enzymes after the practice of physical exercises in Wistar rats. We included six groups: G1 (control group), G2 (group submitted to swimming), G3 (group that consumed green coffee), G4 (group that consumed green coffee and was submitted to swimming), G5 (group that consumed ripe coffee), and G6 (group that consumed ripe coffee and was submitted to swimming). Our results showed that there was a significant reduction in the percentage of visceral fat in G3, G5, and G6. We did not observe significant modifications in glycemia, lipids, lactate dehydrogenase, ferric reducing ability of plasma, and ferric-xylenol orange. The levels of creatine phosphokinase showed a reduction in the groups G2 and G4. No significant differences were found in the atherogenic indices. There is a global demand for natural compounds that can be safe, cheap, related to minimum side effects, and provide health benefits. Our results show that the use of green or ripe coffee may contribute to reduce the percentage of visceral fat and consequently may protect against further complications once this tissue produces proatherogenic hormones. Furthermore, green coffee may play a role in protecting muscle injury after the practice of physical exercises.
