        Broad-specificity amino acid racemase, a novel non-antibiotic selectable marker for transgenic plants

        The broad-specificity amino acid racemase (Bsar) from Pseudomonas putida catalyzes the racemization of various amino acids, offering a flexible and feasible platform to develop a new non-antibiotic selectable marker system for plant transformation. In the present study, we demonstrated that a Bsar variant, Bsar-R174K, that is useful as a selectable marker gene in Arabidopsis and rice that were susceptible to l-lysine and D-alanine. The introduction of wild-type Bsar, Bsar-R174K or Bsar-R174A into E. coli lysine or asparagine auxotrophs was able to rescue the growth of these microorganisms in minimal media supplemented with selectable amino acid enantiomers. The transformation of Arabidopsis with Bsar or Bsar variants based on d-alanine selection revealed that Bsar-R174K had the greatest efficiency (2.40%), superior to kanamycin selectionbased transformation (1.10%). Whereas, l-lysine-based selection exhibited lower efficiency for Bsar-R174K (0.17%). The progenies of selected Bsar-R174K transgenic Arabidopsis revealed normal growth properties. In addition, Bsar-R174K transgenic rice was obtained on l-lysine medium with an efficiency of 0.9%, and the progenies of the transgenic rice revealed morphologically normal phenotypes comparable with their wild-type counterparts. This study presents the first report of broad range amino acid racemase Bsar-R174K as a non-antibiotic selectable marker system applied in transgenic plants.

      • HOW OUTPUT SPECIFICITY OF CUSTOMER PARTICIPATION IMPACTS SERVICE SATISFACTION? THE MODERATING ROLES OF REGULATORY FOCUS AND SHOPPING VALUE

        Previous studies offered inconsistent empirical results for the influence of customer participation on service satisfaction. One possible explanation for this inconsistency is that existing conceptualizations of customer participation do not clearly differentiate the distinct roles of customer participation in service. To address this gap, Dong and Sivakumar (2015) have proposed an updated classification for customer participation based on “output specificity,” which refers to the degree to that the nature of the output is influenced by the person who provides the resource. The output of the customer participation can either be “specific” or “generic”. The “specific output” is defined as the expected service outcome can be idiosyncratic depending on whether the service is provided by the customer or the employee. In contrast, “generic output” refers to expected service outcome is well defined regardless of whether it is delivered by the service provider or the customer. How output specificity of customer participation influences service satisfaction still lacks of empirical examination.

        REVIEW : Mass Eradication of Helicobacter pylori to Prevent Gastric Cancer: Theoretical and Practical Considerations

        Although the age-adjusted incidence of gastric cancer is declining, the absolute number of new cases of gastric cancer is increasing due to population growth and aging. An effective strategy is needed to prevent this deadly cancer. Among the available strategies, screen-and-treat for Helicobacter pylori infection appears to be the best approach to decrease cancer risk; however, implementation of this strategy on the population level requires a systematic approach. The program also must be integrated into national healthcare priorities to allow the limited resources to be most effectively allocated. Implementation will require adoption of an appropriate screening strategy, an efficient delivery system with a timely referral for a positive test, and standardized treatment regimens based on clinical efficacy, side effects, simplicity, duration, and cost. Within the population, there are subpopulations that vary in risk such that a "one size fits all" approach is unlikely to be ideal. Sensitivity analyses will be required to identify whether the programs can be utilized by heterogeneous populations and will likely require adjustments to accommodate the needs of subpopulations.         Development of Graphene-based Sensors on Paper Substrate for the Measurement of pH Value of Analyte

        With excellent properties of graphene material, a number of graphene-based devices have been developed with excellent performance in the past decades. However, difficulty of processing graphene material is a hurdle for its practical realization. In this work, we propose to use vacuum filtration process as the major technique to fabricate graphene-based devices. This technique is simple and effective to practically realize graphene-based sensors on paper substrate, which are equipped with the advantages of low cost, simplicity, flexibility, and disposability. In order to show the functionality of the sensor, determination of pH value of analyte was demonstrated by direct measurement of the resistance across the sensor. Results showed that the sensor has the sensitivity of 30.8 Ω/pH and high linearity (R2=0.9282). Since graphene material can be functionalized by various molecules, it is expected that the graphene-based sensor can be further developed to realize more chemical and biological assays with high sensitivity and specificity for remote environment.

      • Distributed Profitable Deployment of Network Services to Geo-distributed Edge Systems

        Recent advance of Network Function Virtualization (NFV) enables deployment of NFV-based network services on a cloud-base infrastructure. Meanwhile, edge computing provides cloud infrastructure on the the edge of access network to serve end user. This paper proposes a decentralized market-based framework that matches independent network service providers (NSPs) with independent edge service providers (ESPs) for possible deployments of network services with associated payments. The framework benefits all participants by guaranteeing that the results are profitable for all participants: no NSP or ESP can be better off by dropping out of the match result. Simulation results indicate that the proposed approach had the highest average number of deployed network services compared with counterparts.

      • THE RELATIVE EFFECTIVENESS OF SUPERIORITY AND PARITY CLAIMS IN COMPARATIVE ADVERTISING: CONSTRUAL LEVEL THEORY PERSPECTIVE

        Most previous studies exploring the relative effectiveness of superiority and parity claims in comparative advertising were based on the regulatory focus theory. However, the findings of these studies provided limited implications for practice. The current research attempts to examine the relative effectiveness of superiority versus parity claims in comparative advertising from the perspective of construal level theory. Recent research has found that the fitness between message framing and construal level can enhance processing fluency of information. Specifically, loss-framed messages are more impactful when paired with low-level construals, whereas gain-framed messages are more effective when paired with high-level construals. Accordingly, the current study predicts that a superiority claim, which states sponsor brand is better than the competitors, is more effective in enhancing brand attitude than parity claim when the construal level is high. Conversely, a parity claim, which argues sponsor brand asserts parity with the comparison target, lead to more favorable brand attitude than superiority claims in the condition of low-level construal. This study conducted a (superiority claim vs. parity claim) × 2 (high-level construal vs. low-level construal) experimental designs to examine proposed hypotheses. The manipulation of construal level either highlighted a concrete “how” message or an abstract “why” message. The results showed that the superiority (parity) claim leads to more positive brand attitude and purchase intention than the parity (superiority) claim when customers are presented with message highlights an abstract “why” (concrete “how”) construal. Based on the findings, this study suggests that superiority claims combine with the “why”-oriented thoughts can enhance the effectiveness of the comparative advertising. In contrast, when parity claims are used, “how” -oriented, thoughts should be integrated in comparative advertising.

      • Does the Impact of Agricultural zoning Policy on Paddy Planting Areas in Taivan Really Take Effect?

        Agricultural zoning is a major mean of farmland conservation and it has been a key component in policy for the prevention of urban sprawl and nonagricultural development of farmland in Thaiwan. However, despite political commitments to the policy, there is currently little empirical evidence regarding the actual economic impact and effectiveness of this policy. This study adds to current knowledge by asssessing the effect of agricultural zoning policy based on the Regional Planning Act which was amended in 2000 in Taiwan and using big data in combination with datasets from a management information system(MIS) and geographic information system (GIS). With GIS, we extrated anaalytic data from map profiles along with data from a social economic dataset. Using the repeated cross-sectional zoning data at a village level and information about paddy planting areas for the first crop season in 2010 and in 2014, we applied a random effects panel regression to examine the influences of the planned zoing on cropland. Our results demonstrate that the zoning impact on paddy fields located in common agricultural zones is a significant decrease in area of about 4hectares. However, wihin special agricultural districts and urban plannng areas, the zoing effects seem to be positive but insignificant. THis suggests the agricultural zoning policy in Taiwan is likely to disourage farmers from faming, which may prompt them to engage in alternative land use.

        A Genetic Analysis of Taoyuan Pig and Its Phylogenetic Relationship to Eurasian Pig Breeds

        Taoyuan pig is a native Taiwan breed. According to the historical record, the breed was first introduced to Taiwan from Guangdong province, Southern China, around 1877. The breed played an important role in Taiwan’s early swine industry. It was classified as an indigenous breed in 1986. After 1987, a conserved population of Taoyuan pig was collected and reared in isolation. In this study, mitochondrial DNA sequences and 18 microsatellite markers were used to investigate maternal lineage and genetic diversity within the Taoyuan pig population. Population differentiation among Taoyuan, Asian type, and European type pig breeds was also evaluated using differentiation indices. Only one D-loop haplotype of the Taoyuan pig was found. It clustered with Lower Changjiang River Basin and Central China Type pig breeds. Based on the polymorphism of microsatellite markers, a positive fixation index value (FIS) indicates that the conserved Taoyuan population suffers from inbreeding. In addition, high FST values (>0.2105) were obtained, revealing high differentiation among these breeds. Non-metric multi-dimensional scaling showed a clear geometric structure among 7 breeds. Together these results indicate that maternally Taoyuan pig originated in the Lower Changjiang River Basin and Central China; however, since being introduced to Taiwan differentiation has occurred. In addition, Taoyuan pig has lost genetic diversity in both its mitochondrial and nuclear genomes.

        실내 환경의 길찾기 요인에 관한 연구 - 비상 상황에서의 길찾기 요인 프레임워크 제안 -

        Wayfinding plays an important role in healthy and efficient use of indoor environments. An environment that is not suitable for wayfinding brings negative impact to human health and wellbeing. During emergency evacuation, there are unpredictable variables in wayfinding. Thus, there is a need for comprehensive review of wayfinding factors in both normal situations and emergency situation to understand the accurate wayfinding process. This study aims to identify wayfinding factors in normal and emergency situation through a synthesis review of existing empirical studies. This research reviewed 30 empirical articles on wayfinding in domestic and international journals and divided them into normal situations and emergency situations, and analyzed them in terms of two wayfinding factors: environmental factors and user factors, modified from Jamshidi & Pati’s (2020) indoor environmental factors. The research results show that (1) signs was the most important environmental factors in wayfinding, (2) emergency situations mostly focus on user factors, (3) signs and navigation patterns were found to be the most important factors in normal situations and emergency evacuations, respectively. Finally, a framework of wayfinding factors for emergency situations was proposed.
