        Double Subject Constructions in Korean: A Purely Derivational 3D Merge Approach

        Im, Chegyong. 2012. Double Subject Constructions in Korean: A Purely Derivational 3D Merge Approach. Linguistic Research 29(1), 197-215. In this paper, we try to provide theoretical evidences for the structure of DSCs suggested in Im (2002) and Tm (2009), adopting and adapting the derivational approaches including Starke (2001) and Suranyi (2006). We argue against the multiple agree approach and movement approach outlining their theoretical and empirical problems. Then, we will show that the Natural Relation suggested in (lrohmann (2003) and the purely derivational approach in Suranyi (2006) support my argument that NP2 is the subject of the constructions and that the sequence of functional projections (FSeq) suggested in Starke (2001) resolves the concatenation of the constructions, The most advantageous thing is that Merge of NPT as Topic/Focus can be explained in 3D Merge hypothesis suggested in Boeckx (2008), and In (2002, 2004, 2005a, 2005b, 2006a, 2006b, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011).

        Copular Constructions in English:

        The cross-linguistic divergence of copula constructions does not necessarily imply that there is no universal structure for the constructions. Since the introduction of the notion, small clause , the degree of categorial differentiation for copulas found in many languages has no longer been a bothersome phenomenon for linguists. Some recent works on the copula structure based on Merge theory claim that one of the pair {XP, YP} must move to satisfy the canonical order of the construction in the spirit of LCA. This paper attempts to explain how we can choose the one from the pair that must escape from the first Merged structure. Under the assumptions of Multiple Membrane Hypothesis (Im 2013), and employing the cartographical order of functional categories (Rizzi 1997, Cinque 1999, Starke 2001, 2006, among others), I argue that the syntactic object left in small clause has its own intrinsic [Focus] feature that induces the VP-internal location of the object at the interfaces. The morpho-phonemic realization of √BE is followed to meet the legibility condition at the interfaces.

        Auxiliary reduction in English: Procliticization of subject NP to C+T head

        To explain the properties of reduced auxiliaries in English, some studies presume the interaction with syntactic structures, and others claim pure phonological approaches. Many proposals employing the syntactic mechanism, however, still depend on the superficial facts with the rules describing their syntactic processes such as displacement and deletion. Though we agree that auxiliary reduction in English is a phonological phenomenon, we argue that some syntactic mechanisms affect the phonological process of reduction. We argue that the phonological reduction of auxiliaries, i.e., encliticization of auxiliary verbs is partly affected by the subject incorporation to the auxiliary verb, i.e., procliticization of subject elements. So the goal of this study is to show that the process procliticization in English can be explained with the mechanism of “Specifier Incorporation to Head” operated under the Specifier Incorporation Principle (SIP) suggested in van Gelderen (2006) along with the notion of C-to-T feature inheritance.

      • A Feature-based Non-planar Data Model for Urban Traffic Networks

        With analysis on the characteristics of urban traffic networks, the authors set forward a new data model for the GIS expression of urban traffic networks. The data model is based on complete transportation features-roads and integrated connective lanes with same directions, and considers geometry, topology, theme, semantic and temporal information of features within a complete framework. It facilitates GIS expression and manipulations on modern urban traffic networks, az~d offsets the deficiency of traditional data model based on planar topology of arcs and nodes. Furthermore, a non-planar data representation method is developed on the basis of the feature-based data model to make it more suitable for traffic network modeling and analysis, The methods of conceptual modeling and logical modeling are designed to provide the fundament for corresponding data structures and database implementation.

      • An Optimum Vehicular Path Algorithm for Traffic Network Based on Hierarchical Spatial Reasoning

        Human beings' intellection is characteristic of a distinct hierarchy and can be taken to construct a heuristic in the shortest Bath algorithms. It is detailed in this paper how to utilize the hierarchical reasoning on the basis of greedy and directional strategy to establish a spatial heuristic, so as to improve the running efficiency and suitability of shortest path algorithm for traffic network. The authors divide urban traffic network into three hierarchies and set forward a new node hierarchy division rule to avoid the unreliable solution of shortest path. The presented optimum path algorithm, in addition to improve the running efficiency of shortest path algorithms up to several times, conforms to the intellection characteristic of human beings, and is more easily accepted by drivers. Moreover, it does not require the completeness of networks in the lowest hierarchy and the applicability and fault tolerance of the algorithm get improved. The experiment result shows the advantages of the presented algorithm.
