        Novel Control Method for a Hybrid Active Power Filter with Injection Circuit Using a Hybrid Fuzzy Controller

        This paper analyses the mathematical model and control strategies of a Hybrid Active Power Filter with Injection Circuit (IHAPF). The control strategy based on the load harmonic current detection is selected. A novel control method for a IHAPF, which is based on the analyzed control mathematical model, is proposed. It consists of two closed-control loops. The upper closed-control loop consists of a single fuzzy logic controller and the IHAPF model, while the lower closed-control loop is composed of an Adaptive Network based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) controller, a Neural Generalized Predictive (NGP) regulator and the IHAPF model. The purpose of the lower closed-control loop is to improve the performance of the upper closed-control loop. When compared to other control methods, the simulation and experimental results show that the proposed control method has the advantages of a shorter response time, good online control and very effective harmonics reduction.

      • The discovery of the colossal magnetocaloric effect in a series of amorphous ribbons based on Finemet

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A large number of amorphous ribbons based on Finemet have been prepared by rapid quenching on a single copper wheel with linear speed of <I>v</I>=25–30m/s. The ribbons are 20–25μm thick and 6–8mm wide. All as-cast samples are amorphous. Two criteria producing the colossal magnetocaloric effect (CMCE) in magnetic materials working as magnetic refrigerants are high saturation magnetization and sharp ferromagnetic–paramagnetic phase transition. The Fe-based amorphous ribbons fit these cretia. Thermomagnetic curves as well as isothermal magnetization curves around the Curie temperature of all the studied samples have been determined. The results show that the magnetic entropy change, |Δ<I>S</I><SUB>m</SUB>|, belongs to a class of materials with CMCE and the |Δ<I>S</I><SUB>m</SUB>|<SUB>max</SUB> values have been obtained at a moderately low magnetic field change of 1.35T, moreover |Δ<I>S</I><SUB>m</SUB>|<SUB>max</SUB> occurred at quite high temperature.</P>

      • Promoting Higher Education Cooperation between the European Union and Asia: The Case of Vietnam

        With regards to the cooperation between European countries and Asia in higher education Higher Education is a top priority both for Europe and the Vietnamese Government. In the context of Vietnam, Vietnam-European Union universities cooperation gets more opportunities for bilateral and multilateral cooperation on joint-training programmes, collaborative research projects, students and lecturers exchange programmes and exchange scholarships. There has also been more cooperation under research projects funded under ERASMUS. The paper summaries the higher education cooperation between European and Asia focusing the case of Vietnam, raised the challenges in terms of partner universities and the contributions of the cooperation regarding the mobility partnerships to enhancing the international cooperation capacity of the higher education institutions involved and reinforcing the capacity and internationalisation of higher education thus contributing also to raising the prestige and international recognition. The paper presents the impact of European cooperation programmes in Vietnam and concludes some remarks to promote the higher education cooperation between Europe and Asia.

      • Construction of a Wireless Sensor Networking Platform with Vibration Sensing and GPS Positioning

        In this paper, the networking architectures and information middleware of wireless sensor networks are developed to construct the heterogeneous information system platform for the real-time structural health monitoring application. The design and implementation of sensor firmware and networking middleware are the key study topics for WSN-based intelligent system platform. The networking gateway of system platform must be developed the independent and highly interoperability to integrate the heterogeneous networks. The application study combined with vibration sensing and GPS positioning is used to demonstrate the feasibility of the developed system platform. The middleware technology is implemented to filter and pre-process the received data from the Zigbee sensor node and extract the available information to transfer to and record in the system database. Moreover, the GPRS and GSM modules are used to be responsible for the long-distance and alarm message transmission on the information network, respectively. Furthermore, the integration system platform is constructed by integrating Zigbee sensor network, GPRS/GSM communication and LAN internet to illustrate and evaluate the feasibility and performance of the proposed architecture for wireless sensor systems. In conclusion, the intelligent system platform of WSN-based monitoring system is developed and integrated to demonstrate and speed up the practical applications of wireless sensor networks in this paper.

      • Analysis of decoding probability for systematic wireless network coding

        <P>Systematic wireless network coding has been proposed as a potential solution to solve the major drawback of high encoding/decoding complexities of random linear network coding and to increase the decoding capability. However, the complete analysis of the decoding performance has not been fully derived. In this Letter, the authors derive closed-form expressions for the decoding probability under systematic network coding (SNC) over single-hop and multi-hop wireless networks. They validate the analysis by comparing simulation results. Their formulation provides a theoretical analysis for further understanding of the SNC and can be used to improve the current upper bound for the decoding probability.</P>

        Examining American and Chinese Students’ Strategies When Giving Face-to-Face Critical Feedback in Academic Settings

        While the literature on popular Face Threatening Acts (FTAs) such as complaining, requesting, promising, apologizing, and giving and receiving compliments is thriving, the speech act of giving critical feedback in an intercultural setting is quite understudied (but see Itakura & Tsui, 2011; Nguyen, 2008, 2012). In addressing this issue, this paper aims at examining how American and Asian students utilize mitigating strategies when giving face-to-face critical feedback. The study was also designed to record these students’ strategy modification in order to adapt to an intensified level of face-threat. Ten participants (five American and five Chinese students) were recruited to join a three-part interview. For the first component of the study, the subjects watched a video of a badly presented presentation and played the role of the presenter’s classmates to comment on the presenter’s presenting skill (Task A). The face-threatening level was then enhanced as the interviewees were required to imagine facing and giving feedback directly to the presenters (Task B). The second step features the participants reading four written arguments and making critical evaluations (Task C). The change in facethreatening level was marked when the participants’ comments were unexpectedly challenged by the interviewer who pretended to hold an opposite viewpoint (Task D). Finally, a semi-structured interview was carried out to find out the participants’ perspectives on giving critical feedback. Collected data reveal fairly equivalent use of mitigating devices by American and Chinese students in Task A and C, while some divergences in strategies were observed in Task B and D.

        Numerical simulation and analytical assessment of STCC columns filled with UHPC and UHPFRC

        A nonlinear finite element model (FEM) using ATENA-3D software to simulate the axially compressive behavior of circular steel tube confined concrete (CSTCC) columns infilled with ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) was presented in this paper. Some modifications to the material type “CC3DNonlinCementitious2User” of UHPC without and with the incorporation of steel fibers (UHPFRC) in compression and tension were adopted in FEM. The predictions of utimate strength and axial load versus axial strain curves obtained from FEM were in a good agreement with the test results of eighteen tested columns. Based on the results of FEM, the load distribution on the steel tube and the concrete core was derived for each modeled column. Furthermore, the effect of bonding between the steel tube and the concrete core was clarified by the change of friction coefficient in the material type “CC3DInterface” in FEM. The numerical results revealed that the increase in the friction coefficient leads to a greater contribution from the steel tube, a decrease in the ultimate load and an increase in the magnitude of the loss of load capacity. By comparing the results of FEM with experimental results, the appropriate friction coefficient between the steel tube and the concrete core was defined as 0.3 to 0.6. In addition to the numerical evaluation, eighteen analytical models for confined concrete in the literature were used to predict the peak confined strength to assess their suitability. To cope with CSTCC stub and intermediate columns, the equations for estimating the lateral confining stress and the equations for considering the slenderness in the selected models were proposed. It was found that all selected models except for EC2 (2004) gave a very good prediction. Among them, the model of Bing et al. (2001) was the best predictor.
